  • I have a seed that's being growing roots for a couple of weeks now, I'd say the longest is about 4" long with some smaller roots forming at the base as well. How long until a shoot starts to form? There's no sign of one sprouting yet! Thanks.

  • @mdoll4 check out my 'video response' titled avocado update. I am not sure the time frame between roots and the first appearance of the shoot.

  • does it matter if you put sink water or drinking water

  • I love gardening!!!

  • this was very helpful! Thanks!

  • people you have to peel the skin off before put it in water.

  • No fruit ? Why not ?

  • @MRBLACKPEARL04 If you plant it from seed it will take 5-10 years before it will flower or make fruit. That's why people buy "grafted" plants if they want fruit next season. Rarely sometimes you will get a male plant that will never produce flowers but you can change it by cutting the bark near the base and almost killing it, then it will produce flowers and fruit but I have found that they dont taste very good then(big seed, small fruit and bitter).

  • I have a kinda pointy avocado... Do i do the same steps because i think i have another variety of avocado... The seed is actually smaller... So wat do i do!!!

  • @PlayingDead567 I'd recommend tossing that one, and using a larger seed. The larger seeds have a tendency to grow better.

  • @PiranhaJaw22 But its not the regular Hass avocado.. It has a longer neck and its les "chubby"

  • @PiranhaJaw22 i tried smaller avocado seeds they actually grow maybe i just got lucky

  • @PlayingDead567 It is probably a Haas avocado. It is ok to plant those too! Those are Florida variety avocados!!

  • hey iam about 1 month into growing my seed and it already cracked but what do u mean bby add small soil increments? like add soil into the cup of water? little by little untill its filled?

  • @henry12371 when the root has reached the bottom of the glass and has started to grow smaller ones, drop some soil into the container. the next day, drop some more, and continue this pattern until the glass is full (takes a period of about five to seven days). after the leaves appear, take out the plant and transplant it.

  • Just plant the seed in the dirt and it will grow just fine

  • @descargaelbano True that, but it will die in winter where temperatures are below 1ºC like happened in my yard.

  • @fenrirgg Oh sorry, I meant dirt in a pot. avocado seeds have about a 99% germination rate and they will grow if the seed is halfway in moist soil too eliminating any shock or damage to the roots when adding soil or removing it from the cup.

  • well you dont have to put it in water first i put mine straight into soil and it grew fine and it grows faster than using this way ....

  • it needs to be hovering over water not in the water for faster process

  • Looks like the head of a you know what.I don't wanna sound vulgar .

  • Finally the seed with the red things at the bottom grew up?

  • has there ever been a problem of sticking the toothpicks in too far and stabbing the embryo, thus killing the plant?

  • after trying unsuccessfully 2 grow dozens of avocado pits, i finally got 1 to grow. i pretty much did everything wrong. he's about 10" tall now and i cdnt be more proud. i think it's time to give him his 1st solid dirt food. i hope i dont pamper and spoil him to death. he is beautiful!!! [i tried svl dif ways to spell that and none of them look right] to

  • here we actually use the pear/avocado leaves from the tree, as a herbal tea/drink. you can use the leaves freshly picked or let them dry, put them in hot water to steep or boil them in the water ....

  • Putting it in water never works for me, The only way I was able to make them germinate was to put it in a plastic bag covered in wet tissue paper. and placing the bag in a warm place.

  • I planted mine about 4 weeks ago or so, and it's got really long roots, probably about 5 or 6 in! And It's got a sprout at the top thats about 6 or 7 in. and it already has little leaves and it's green :) I'm going to plant it sometime this week hopefully :D I can't wait I hope it grows up well. it's funny how you care for them like they are your kin or something <3

  • im growing one right now i thought it wasnt going any where for like 3months it did nothing so i put it in a bigger contaner and its growing mad but idk if its a tree or plant

  • I did mine 2wks ago and I removed skin off the bottom b4 doing it and it started cracking last week but no root yet, it's exciting

  • actually, i took all the skin off of mine, and it cracked and sprouted in only a few weeks.

  • Thank you, this was helpful. I started one today but I let the seed sit out yesterday. I didn't know if you were supposed to dry it out, so hopefully it will grow. It cracked a little but not bad, I think I will try it still. Great video.

  • very good commentary. i'm enjoying all the heartfelt responses. sweet, kind of silly. sir, would it actually grow more rapidly, after well established sprouting, if it is grown outdoors? also, i've heard they are quite susceptable to a freeze. can you provide a lttle more info on ootimal conditions or precautions?

how large can an avocado tree grow indoors??? 3/4 of a dining area?? what size pot??

BE ADVISED!--avocado is toxic for any pet bird , can be LETHAL.

    thank you.

    8)

  • I opened an avocado to eat one day and it had a root. I thought, "WOW! This is ready to grow." NOT! I put it in water, placed it on the counter top and watched it for months. At least four months. Finally the root and shoot began to grow. I have to groom it often. The last time I cut it back to one quarter its size. It was taking up three quarters of the dining area. It is 18 years old now and is growing new branches everywhere. I feed it once in a while with Miracle Grow. It loves the stuff.

  • Your method seems alot more complicated.

All i did was thrown mine in a cup of water untill it cracked then let it sit half sumbmerged thereafter.

  • When you say they're not going to generate fruits, do you mean because the tree is still so young? It eventually will, right?

  • I just buried it in soil... right now it's taller than the one shown in this video, however the true leaves have not spread... Does it need more light?

  • what about the sun? does it have to be in a shady place or a window with a regular amount of sunlight is ok?

  • speedbåd avocado engel

  • you can put the seed in the sun for a day or two and the skin drys up so you can peel it alot easier

  • my root used to be pure white, now it is almost a carmel color, I am worried it is dying. Should I put it in soil? It hasn't grown its stem yet. Also where can I get proper soil, I think it needs to be PNK rich, right? Also, how do I tell if it is male or female and when will I be able to tell? Thanks!!!

  • if you moved them outside or manually polonated them would they then grow fruit?

  • I had planted my avocado seed in soil, actually completely covered it then the boyfriend asked if I had put a hole in it! I did not. It had been in soil for about 2-3 weeks, so I unearthed it and poked a deep hole in the top. I only had washed off any stuck on pulp/flesh, whatever you call the inside of the fruit that you eat and planted it. Within one week it was half the size of what is seen in the vid and now about 3 wks later it tooks just like the one in the video!

  • just remove the bottom skin?????.... and does the water have to be cold??

  • just remove the bottom skin?????....

  • Hey! I randomly decided to try and plant an avocado tree yesterday so I set up two seeds ...& I went down to check on them this morning ...& there's little orange dots growing on the pits. Is that normal? Is it diseased? Should I throw it out? I'm kinda worried about it ... actually.

  • @jkAdore I haven't experienced that before. Did you remove the skin on the underside of the seed?

  • @jkAdore can you upload a video of the orange spots ?

  • @jkAdore Yes mine did this but it is growing a root now!

  • @jkAdore the same ghappened to me. the seed does bleed check internet. one of mina has actually cracked open after a month and has a little sprout. :D good luck

  • @jkAdore i have orange dots on mine also because i cut some of the flesh. the ones that i cut the flesh crack earlier then the one i just leave alone. the one i cut cracked in a about a week. i'm doing an experiment about which seed grows the fastest, cut or no crack or with no skin or both combine.

  • you could always try pollinating them by hand if you have a male and female plant (or male and female flowers on one plant). Once they flower, you could probably collect pollen on a q-tip and rub it onto the female flower. I don't know how long it takes for them to flower, but if you really want to try for fruit it's worth a shot!

(I've just started my first seed today, so I can always try and let you know in... several years?)

  • Thank you much for useful info! What else you growin'?

  • i have 4 avocados that i'm growing. 1 hasn't done anything, 2 have rooted, and one is a 13-14 inch sprout/tree. im excited :D im really successful with avocados i guess

  • Hi, I love to garden and plant things and i thought that it would be a great idea to plant an avocado seed but i don't know how, do you take the skin off of the bottom ?

and you should make a video on how to plant the avocado seed in the soil because i don't really know how to do that

  • why arent these plants going to give no fruit? i didnt understand that, did i miss something?

  • @StreetArtillery

they are not fruiting because these are going to be 'aesthetic' style indoor plants. In order to fruit, it requires pollination from the outside neighboring plants spurting out pollen carried by the wind / bees / etc

  • Ohhhhhhh NOOOOO!!! I stopped the video and went and took off ALL the skin of my 'seed'. It's been sitting in water for a few weeks and NOTHING was happening.

I hope I didn't mess it up. Also, I've had it on my window sill, which faces east/south. It gets sun half the day. Should I move it? Throw it away and try again??

    Nice video! Thanks!

  • @betteboop57 throw it out. some seeds are not going to crack. make sure the large part is sitting in water.

  • @PiranhaJaw22 Yep, the large end is in the water. OK, I'll throw it out, go get another avocado and try again. :( Should I put the next one somewhere else, where it gets 'filtered' light?

    Thanks!

  • the seeds will not produce fruit correct?

  • Hehe, it may worth to tell people to place the seed with the pointy tip upwards. I put a seed into water like over a month ago, but backwards (this is how I thought it would be "normal") and nothing happened :) Another seed actually cracked and I thought that is a bad thing, I split it apart and only then I noticed the tiny plant was forming inside...

  • cant you manual pollinate yourself, like rubbing the plants together or putting a fan on to blow gusts of wind in their direction. im not sure but its an idea

  • This guy has a video of unboxing a fleshlight!!!!!!X)

  • @huertab18c5 lol

  • thanks for sharing that! I just spiked one tonight hoping to try yet again - after 40 years of trying, lol!

  • I grow mine in pots, they always rot in water

  • Damn! yesterday , i put my avacado seed in the ground upside down, the root pointing up....my first plant..thx for the video... stupid me..hahahaha

  • use your finer to polinate them! i did indoor tomato plants and that is how you get tomatos, you have to use a paint brush or finger tip. try it!

  • have you ever checked to see if it is better to use tap water compared to purified water? in my area, our tap water is loaded with contaminants.

  • hahaha those look really funny. i made my own :)

  • will it grow fruits?

  • are they still alive, did they grow alot

  • I'm growing one :) in south dakota... Its very cold here, but we keep it pretty warm in the house... It's 23 inches tall... A month and a half old :P

  • All my windows are on the North side so there's barely any sun, and its winter so its cold, so it took a while for mine to start roots. I put 5 in water between 4 to 2 months ago as I ate the avocados, and only 2 seeds gave me roots; one got a 1 inch root, and one got a 3.5 inch root. There is no green on either one, but I decided to put them in the ground today anyway. They'll be fine in the ground once they have roots and they won't just randomly die, right?

  • @LolieJulie We'll find out!

  • @LolieJulie if you know how to, you could place a mirror outside to redirect sunlight through a window...or use a lamp

  • @Biochiq- I live in Gresham (just East of Portland) and am thinking about doing a few pits with my daughter. How is yours doing in our climate? Do you live near Portland, or are you in Eastern Oregon?

  • when is a good time to put the seed in the soil?

  • My root is like 5 inches long. The seed is slowly breaking up into two and a plant is kinda bursting out.

  • Do you remove all the skin?

  • are you suposed to change the water every day / week or month?

  • @emmie0212 add to it as it evaporates

  • @PiranhaJaw22

     ok thank you ! :)

  • I was wondering if I grew a avacodo tree from a avacado seed will it it grow avacados on the tree if I put it out side or is it just a tree please post back I have asked everyone and they have not posted back

  • @LeslieG122 i am from PuertoRico a tropical country i planted many avocados ( aguacates) i used to have one in my back yard , so you can come to my channel and ask any thing you want about it

  • i live in a tropical country and this is crap !! you can plant the seed directly in the soil ,period ,

  • @PRLIBRENOWMAGNUS I live in Canada, why don't you come on up here and try growing one in the soil...

  • @Stiletos if the summer is hot the seed could brought BUT when the cold come the plant will die , avocados ( aguacate in spanish ) can't resist the cold ,

  • Does it grow in winter? If i put it in my room?

  • @GreyBillie yes it grows in winter as long as the water doesnt freeze!!!

  • @GreyBillie Yep, me and my girl are doing one now, its growing just fine.

  • thanks alot! i read a webpage on how to do it and i had no clue how to do the toothpick part. thanks.

  • just place the seeds into the soil let the top open a little bit. it will get roots.

  • how long does it take to grow? :)

  • i doesn't mater if you add soil or not when your plant starts growing the trunk you you can plant it directly into the soil just make sure that the sand/soil stil contain allot of water and start by slowly giving it less water. Ive had a succes rate of 100%. you will never have a dead seed if you use the seeds directly from the tree WHEN THE FRUIT HAS FALLEN and is ripe! they can take time to grow. You can have a plant 1 m tall in 6-8 months if you give it enough water, food and sunlight.

  • Omg I luv tosz lolzs that r the bom well g2g bie bie :p

  • what if it has like little white fur or hair on it.? mine is 3 or 4 weeks i change the water every 3-4 days, the root is barely a inch and i see white fur or hair forminq on the seeed is that normal or do i wash it?

  • Thanx Jerome

  • the best time to do this is just before the summer, especially if you live in a place where winters are cold. the avocado is a tropical tree, so the summer will give it time to establish itself before the winter comes :)

  • When will the avacado start to sprout?

  • Mine has a root that had formed inside the avocado. The root is about 2 inches and its been in water, half of the seed is submerged, for 4 weeks and the surface has cracked but i have no sprout yet. I live in Oregon and the window sill sometimes gets cold in the morning and then warm in the afternoon due to fall weather. should i continue keeping it in direct sunlight or move it into low light.

  • does it matter what type of avocado?

  • @KingMufasa08 it should not.

  • Is it okay if i put paper clips into the seed? I didnt have any toothpicks on hand.. will it hurt the seed? also... does room temperature help?

  • @Biochiq the paper clips shouldn't hurt it. just don't insert it too far in. room temperature is fine. should be warm.

  • why have you plant your avocado on the side? the plant have growed on the side, it don't look so nice.

  • Don't they grow naturally, I'm pretty sure there is not tooth picks and glasses waiting under every avocado tree.

  • @hanselos they usually get transported into water where they stay afloat and germinate. Mother nature take care of her kids

  • This is a very helpful video. Both of my seeds have cracked open and are going to root only after 2 weeks! =)

  • that take to long i did it in moist dirt and it work =) and did that one to but it was to long

  • how many times are you going to say , "its because i removed the skin"

  • Thanks for the tip. I'll try it.

  • I put mine ontop of a glass like in the video, about 2 weeks ago.. It cracked after 2 days tho.. but there's no root at all yet, is that normal?

  • @Zeiknox yes

  • @PiranhaJaw22 Ok thanks :D. I got another question .. So the seed is cracked and I can see the little seed inside when looking under it. Should this little seed be fully submerged in water ?

  • @PiranhaJaw22 why cant u just put it in dirt? why doesnt that work?

  • I did none of these things and my avocado is 2 metres proud... Radioactive soil, perhaps?

  • what kind of soil do you transplant the avocado tree in?

  • how long does it take to get the root

  • hahahahha i have a compost bin, and the pits get thrown in the bin, and i have about 50 avacado trees now, who wants one?

  • @ImAHungryBoy

    ha...

i got a bunch in my compost...

dammitt..I bet that I had one or two and didnt even know it...

  • @ImAHungryBoy

    GIMME ONE XD

  • @ImAHungryBoy ...

i better try one of your.ssss

  • what? :o why it wont come avocados on it? why isnt it come any fruits?

  • when u say that u have to add soil? am i going to add soil in the glas when it's water in it? so mix water and soil in the glas? just pour soil in the glas of water and the avocado? If so, how much soil? PS. Mine have cracked :) and how long need the root to be before u can plant it in directly soil? and do u plant the whole seed/pip in the soil or do u have the pip on top of the soil and the root in the soil, and on that it's coming a plant? good video anyway thank you!

  • well done

  • see my avocado

    search " yaharoni"

    :-)

  • i have two seeds sitting in water for about 2 months. does it need more sun light cuz a that momment their sitting on top of my stereo so... ya feed back would be nice

  • @WhereIsNumNum did you remove the skin on the bottom? is the fat base underwater? if it takes longer than a month, definitely get rid of it. it shouldn't take longer than 3 weeks.

  • @PiranhaJaw22 yep i let the skin soak for about a week then peeled it of in one nice big peice. it looks like theres a crack running around the seed but its never opened.

  • @WhereIsNumNum how long has that crack been there? i would consider another seed.

  • @PiranhaJaw22 its been there about 2 weeks. it runs top to bottom and it looks like it wants to open up but it never does. and the thing is i have two seeds one doing that and ones just sitting there forever not really doing anything.

  • @WhereIsNumNum are they small seeds, or larger seeds? The smaller ones don't tend to grow well. The better seeds are about 1.5 inches wide. Only try the larger ones.

  • @WhereIsNumNum try to get as many seeds to do this. this way if some fail , the rest will still germinate and sprout. i have five started up and so far two are growing a couple inches n one is bout to start sprouting. I have bad sunlight coming in my apartment but put them under a fish tank floresent light .

  • @iSmokeLikeBobMarley ya i now have one thats was about 18 inches tall but i pruned it down to about 10. and have another one sprouting right now

  • @WhereIsNumNum You need to put them on a window sill in direct light. That is the only way I have had success getting the pit to root... also, only 1 in 5 will actually root... try again if not rooting in glass after 4 weeks or so.

  • Nature is so amzing!

  • does it give fruit

  • @MrEgypt95 No Sherlock....

  • Will beer work instead of water? I like beer with my avocado and chile limon, maybe the avocado would taste a little bit like beer?

  • why not just put it under the soil and let it grow on its own, like why tooth pics and a water pot or whatever that thing u had ther?

  • I think the ones I get have been sterilized some how. I soak 'em, and do everything you show here, but consistently nothing. What brand name is on the stcker on the whole avocados you use?

  • Thanks for the info! It's been about 30 years since I remember trying to grow an avocado tree. And I don't remember how it turned out.

  • oopsie daisy, i forgot to remove the skin from the bottom. at least it is still doing exactly what it should be doing but longer.

  • Very serious important question:

Which half of the avocado touches the water, the flat bottom or the slightly tipped bottom????

I will submerge the flat bottom in water until I get a reply.

    Thanks

  • @darkfang77 flat.

  • Thanks, my seeds have been in the water 2 days now.

Two minor questions, I have 2 seeds right now.

Whats the chances that they will germinate?

And when I was taking the seeds out, the surface got a little scratch from a knife, its not deep, just superficial, will that affect its chances?

  • @darkfang77 did you remove the skin off the bottom? if you did, it may still take a week to two weeks for it to crack open. any longer than 3 weeks, then you should throw it out. I started with 12 seeds. They all germinated, but only 2 turned out to be quite successful. The others had difficulty maintaining their leaves. I suggest that you start with a dozen seeds.

  • @PiranhaJaw22 No I left the whole pit intact. I changed the water this morning.

The unsubmerged part of the pit has started to go slightly wrinkly but apart from that, nothing much.

I will take the suggestion for 12 seeds. I buy avocados once a week, I'll buy a couple more next time so I can get more seeds.

  • @darkfang77 i suggest removing the skin off the bottom. if the skin gets wrinkly, there's not enough water penetrating the seed.

Try to germinate the larger seeds.

  • By skin, do you mean the hard outer shell?

I will try scraping off some of the shell at the bottom today and see what I get.

  • @darkfang77 you just kinda scrape at the brown covering. The part you will see is kinda a light bageish yellow color lol

  • You can grow them anywhere as long as you keep it indoors in a relatively warm place with plenty of sunlight. they won't survive a winter.

  • mine survived the winter but I do live in sunny california.

  • hello every buddy dos any buddy no if i could grow one of these in canada

  • thanks!

  • how long does it take for an avocado to finally turn into a tree and produce little baby avocadoes?

  • @mermaidstar7 7-10 years

  • @mermaidstar7 First you have to pollinate it. or it wont make avocado's..

  • The "skin"nothing to do with it. if soaked in water it will become soft....some of the pit are faulty and won't prout at all and some will....the pits can be grown like shown and some some can be wrapped in toilet paper or paper towle (soaked in water) and pklace in a plastic ziplock bag and thrown under the sink and they will crack and sprout...

  • @wigglygiggly77 Yeah. I just cleaned mine off after I removed it from the Avocado and put it in water like shown in the video and the root is sprouting.

  • I have a very successful plant growing in my window...I have 2 others I placed in damp paper towl below the sink and pottet them...they have very long stems and leaves up top...but odn't look that great...I also have one that has one big thick root but nothing shooting......goes to show some pits grow and others don;t....good luck with your growing!!!

  • Can these grow at room temperature? If I keep it in my house (because it's winter) at around 20-22 degrees Celsius, how long would it take to start growing?

  • @Arpeggiato Mine took 2 months to crack and start sprouting. (I started it in early Feb and I live in California.)

  • And if you want it to grow as quickly as possible: use ground rock minerals and rich soil taken from a forest. I use mineral supplements.

And the secret to getting it to sprout faster was described in this video (removing the skin at the bottom at least).

And then just love your plants!

  • Whenever I'm faced with a contruction problem nowadays, I ask myself: can I apply tensegrity?

Go study tensegrity! It will help you solve this problem and many others much more efficiently.
