The singer of this is, very likely, my grandfather's nephew, Paul Althouse, who was a reknowned tenor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the 1920's and 30's. According to my grandfather, Paul would sing this song when he visited Reading and sang at my grandfather's house on West Douglas Street. I'm not sure of this, at all, but it's altogether possible. In any case, the singer was good enough to be Paul Althouse.

Some Civil War songs created great depresssion. Those that lost sons during the War were told not to listen to songs such as: The Vacant Chair, All Quiet On The Potomoc and "Jsu Before The Battle Mother". Sad indeed ..........
this video skipped the second verse! which goes as follows: oh I long to see you mother and the loving ones at home, but I'll never leave our banner, till in honor I can come, tell the traitors all around you that their cruel words we know, in every battle kill our soldiers cry the help they give their falls.
Thanks for posting this,It was one of the fav. of my late Mom, and she taught us this wonderful melody when we were kids.Brings back a lot of childhood memories.

Some kids I knew once sang this at school. It's the same melody, basically as Hobo's Lullaby, I just realized.
