  • I love itttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt

  • I bought "The Inner Mounting Flame" when I was 21 I'm now 62. I wasn't a teenager does this count? A musician for life.

  • I discovered john when I was 16,5. Now I am 50. We could establish the FAN club of people of this age who discovered JM when they were teenagers, HAHA....

  • @TheChange1961 Hey I discovered JM when I was a teenager, too... But only 40 years after the rest of you did. Haha

  • hariprasad chaurasia, zakir and a sister labeque together, this is really rare and awsome. great!!

  • Amazing. Rendered speechless, as I always am after listening to JM's 'Shakti'-like incarnations. The tabla playing simply blows me away...wonderful!

  • @phlyeguy Rendered speechless 100%+++++++++++Combinacao :- Mente, (palavra...meo termo porque as palavras ficam em silencio), ação, corpo, espírit.

  • @chumbels ive been listening to Mclaughlin since i was 7 and i just turned 19

  • 9 people don't like video cassette recorders.

  • Hariprasad is THE man!!

  • beautiful piece of art! Makes me forget the world. Super..

  • It makes western musicians look like kids in kindergarden when it comes to rhythm and harmony

  • His statement of the melody is just breathtakingly gorgeous. His ability to vary his picking dynamics at that speed are really extraordinary.

  • i prefere the sound of the first shakti guitar

  • Thats the craziest tampura playing ive ever seen, konokol must be this guys bible or something! You'll have to skip to about 3 minutes because thats where all the action starts.

  • what is the specific genre definition of this type of music?

  • What is that girl doing next to the drummer lol

  • why don't you find out yourself lol - its called a tampura

  • allways brings tears to my eyes...JM, live to be 150 years...

  • It just doesn't get any better than this........

  • truely sensational

  • Awesome stuff!!

  • amazing ! ! :)

  • Marvelas......

  • chaurasia is abansuri player

    not flute

  • Zakir Bhai and John Ji.... sheer telepathy at 3:10..... do you believe in magic ? !

  • @raga609 i am a magician, so i do believe i have too!

    zakir and john ftw

  • How eclectic. True genius is ageless. The beginning is as Fusion Jazz as it gets. Then the World music kicks in. How completely beautiful! After over thirty years of listening to them, i still get chills. The Spirituality is an epiphany to anyones senses.

    OMM

  • I absolutely love this tune. John McLaughlin and clan is such an inspiration. Every album is so diverse. For the album in which this song appears you have 80's fusion throughout, then you get to the end of the album and get a gem like this. They seemed to have wedged a clip from the tune India from Handful of Beauty in there as well. There will never be anyone who could ever come close to the greatness of McLaughlin. It surprises me how many people dont know a thing about this guy.

  • I have to admit...until recently, I was one of those people who didn't know anything about JM, MO, or Shakti...but I do NOW!

Was this piece composed, or did it evolve from a jam session? It almost appears as though they are just jamming.

I will continue to discover this brilliant music that had somehow escaped my notice until now!

  • @Bongofury361 - I couldn't even guess how they may of come up with it, besides the fact that when you put however many brilliant musicians in a room together, with a shared spiritual relationship for divine harmonies and rhythms, magic happens. Music-to take something from nothing, making it something. LOL

  • If only every person on this planet could understand and enjoy the full debth of real music like this, then the world would be a beter place.

  • One opened to evolving in ones craft and/or personal growth must incorporate and include the contributions of other cultures, perfection then achieved. Shakti and John McLaughlin, PERFECTION!

  • truly fantastic...he's speaking from his flute, just incredible

  • My God, thank you!

  • Hah!

  • The heck with who owns the creator or god, I would just enjoy it.

India can be a power house if Indians learn to

be creative and merciful to fellow beings instead of criticizing for the sake of doing so.

  • No not devotional at all. We worship Sound - Nada Brahma or "Sound Is God" is what they say in India. From science (the Big Bang or Big Sound) to religion (every major religion has the Voice or Sound of "God" coming First before anything else) this is pure worship of the act of Creation. And the act of creation is GOD.

  • Talking about music is like dancing to architecture .. (ZAPPA. F)

  • Nice usage of the quote here.

  • love how the flute comes in at the beginning...the seamless melding of cultures and musical roots...truly amazing to watch/listen.. will enjoy this for quite sometime. youtube is the shiz and THANKS FOR POSTING!!

  • amasing interpretation... i love this king of music... thaks!!!!

  • godly.. love mclaughling..since i was 15.. im 50 now.

  • @chumbels I agree with you, I discovered JM's music when I was 14 or so, I'm 52 now and I'll love it for the rest of my life.

  • Brilliant.......

  • whoaaaaa

    perfect collabroation by all.

  • Oh, THANK YOU!.....

  • nice collaboration

  • Brilliant! great music by great players.

    Thanks mate!!!

  • Thanks Ika, nice to see you pay me a visit now and again :-)

  • the frequency i want to be in...

  • That was absolutely beautiful! Thank you so much. It was a pleasure. :-)

    May peace be with all.

  • this is so amazing...THANK YOU Bazonics!!!!!!! - Hil

  • Sound so sweat and transcendental. Only devotes of the Lord can play Universal music like this. Thanks!

  • Neh, great music like this needs more iq points than your average religious person has.

  • You are so intelligent, master NJlo! You only forget that this is devotional music... oops... hihihihihi

  • Religion has no order here!

  • No? mmm... Hariprasad Chaurasia is a devote, John Mclaughlin is a devote, Zakir Hussain is a devote.

This is devotional music, and you don't know how it work, i suppose.

  • I think Shakti was my favorite Mclaughlin adventure.

  • at 5:25, the reaction of the tabla player looks very gai :-)

this is like an call and response game/music

  • That is how tabla musicians react to music... A lot of Asian music has a lot to do with facial expression

  • I think there are some artist who has more than music and art, John Mclaughlin has that thing. I´ve seen various shows of JM trío and still have that wonderful sensation of music and positive energy

  • ah music from the heavens. If only the mainstream of America could support the arts!

  • That's 'cause the mainstream is blinded by "booty". Such a shame. But still, there is a fairly large fanbase for this music too. I went to see John McLaughlin not too long ago and I was amazed at the crowd! So glad to see people still love this music.

  • Yea, I saw Shawn Lane and shook his hand and told him thanks about a year before he died. These giants in real music never will die. Their music like John's will sustain itself to many generations, not like the "booty music thats on the scene now. I am embarased to be an American at times. But yea I am glad to see some people still out there that know what real music is. thanks

  • Wow, what a great find this performance is!

    Thank you.

  • What type of Flute is that? It's amazing. The intro of this reminds me of their verson of "Lotus Feet" I love that song.

  • it's a bansuri dude

  • Thanks, I've bought one for myself now :D

  • killer, i picked up a few of em too. love how cheap they are and how much control they allow you to have for phrasing. plus the tone is killer

  • I certainly relate Dannew-this music is enchanting and sublime.

  • I have his cd on this performance..but this one wasn't on it!...Super social mucisians!

  • Muy guenooooooooooo!!!

  • I like how they smile and nod at each other as if they were communicating something.

  • Its because they are indeed communicating with each other, just through the music and knowing where each person is taking it. It really is a remarkable thing to see when musicians of this level do it!

  • @robcastellani too true :)

  • Waw!!! John Mclaughlin with zakeer hussain are unblieveable

  • AMAZING THANK "U"

  • This is the only instrumental solo i've heard in my 53 years of deep listening, to be PROFOUND. I listen to it like a prayer and truly know that if God is audible, this is it.

  • Amazing love the ambience to this piece. Bamboo Flute is simply Wah wah khya bate hai :)

  • wow,,,

  • does anyone know which LP/CD album this piece (peace) comes from?

  • There is a short but blissful version on the 1984 album 'Mahavishnu', this is the only recording of it. It is available on cd.

  • are the bamboo flute, tabla drums, tambura, and piano parts played by these musicians on the album version or are they synthed by john's guitar on the album?

  • No, the line up is the same as here, in fact JM stays on rhythm only. I've had quite a lot of queries about this track, maybe i'll post the original.

  • @bazonics what is the name of the album this track is on!? i only have found remember shakti where chaurasia too is playing, but could not find this track there.

    does anyone know!?

  • @nisa06 Thisi one is called Chandrakauns

  • John didn't use the synth on the album; not for those cuts. all "people".

  • Something happens when Mclaughlin plays that closed cord in the begining -- the spirit descends, the boundaries disolve, and the journey transitions from one realm to another. "When blue turns gold." That is duende.

  • i have encountered God manifested by Music, as my tears have displaced all my fears.

Please bookmark this performance and thank you for posting this rare performance.

  • Wow! Other than John McLaughlin who are these musicians?

  • Zakir Hussein on percussion. That's all I know off the top of my head.

  • Click on "more".

  • That would be Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia on Flaute and Zakir Husain on Tabla. Not sure about the Piano player.

  • I'm not 100% sure, but I think the piano player is Katia Lebeque. She recorded with John McLaughlin (Belo Horizonte, duets on the Mediterranean Concerto album) and was (is?) his partner. Profound musicians creating profound music. Utterly wonderful.

  • you are right !

  • Flute's solos are so soulful!

  • What would you expect from the worlds greatest bansuri master Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia? :) He's out of this world. Once I had the blessful luck to hear him playing live. It was like as if my soul flew far away from the concert and went on a great trip to India, where it circled over giant hills and wild green forests. I know it sounds wierd, but that was the way I felt. (without any use of drugs or alike) HariGee reaches to your soul and further. :)

  • I saw them in California in '79, i think and was blown away. had similar feelings and left this world for sailing. I remember it was the Santa Monica civic auditorium and what was really fascinating was how unappreciative the crowd was, I was in awe while my friend told me it was the worst concert they had ever been to. I was a big Mahavishnu fan and I guess the people there are/were not ready for real music, if you want AC/DC It is wonderful to be able to let your mind expand on its own.Salaams

  • it certainly not. i know this happens to me and i have talked to other music lovers. It only mean that music means more than sounds to you. it takes you to another world

  • Man, that just brought tears to my eyes. What a moment...lucky enough to be captured on tape. THANKS FOR POSTING! That just made my week!

  • unbeliveble .....

    what a spirit....

i have new name for this music..... HEM....

    High Energy Music....

    heheh

  • Magic

  • hariprasad steals the show

  • The sound of that flute is otherworldly!

  • ANYBODY KNOW WHAT GUITAR HE IS USING?

  • MAGNIFICENT! WHAT GUITAR IS HE USING?

  • It's 'the shakti guitar'. Was custom made for him by Abraham Wechter.

  • astounding. pure genius!

  • great

  • superbe! vraiment trés bon ensemble

  • Sheer brilliance....I have 2 albums from each. Ahhhh to have been in the audience.....No ! To be so wealthy as to have these playing for my guests after partaking of the finest foods. All bodies seated arround in a room lit only by candlelight the aromas of herbs teasing the air. Bliss.

  • hari om

  • Katia and Marielle really are complete musicians, with an open mind that is very rare on erudit musicians!

  • a fusion of east and west

  • "what need have I for this, what need have I for that? I am dancing at the foot of my lord, all is bliss all is bliss"- great song from Shakti.

  • It's such a shame such exquisite sound of tampuri cannot be noticed in this video

  • Ahhhhhhh!!! It's soooooo smooth!!! I think i'll be needing a massage afterwards!!! Hehehehehehehe!!!

  • MAGIC, SOUL, MUSIC... SHAKTI!

  • The synthesis of intellectual and emotial depth here just scares me... probably because I'll never approach it... but I can't imagine not being grateful to these people.

  • I will only say, that this kind of music if from heaven. And that i'm glad that there are musicians on earth with that kind of talent!

Peace & love! Jay Vrindavan! :o)

  • oh man i love white people

    lol

    good luck

    peace

  • ho hooooo holy shit..its both west and east joined toghether cool

  • First in my life i felt god..perfect people on stage and an amazing fusion

  • n they sit on the floor

  • Seen John since the 70's and in the 90's with Shakti. Seen Hari with Zakir. All in small venues. Each experience was a blessing. They are all touched by the Gods but it is a joy to watch Zakir on stage his skill, charm and playfulness .

  • There are many guitar geniuses..John is certainly one of them.

  • beautiful

  • Wow. Ive never seen anything like it. This made me go and get loads of albums and do loads of research. i never thought such a fusion existed but always thought it would be incredible and it is.

ps. i love how zakir looks so happy when he plays!

  • Calum. John McLaughlin's works are myriad. One of his earliest is called My Goals Beyond (around 1969). This album is a lovely insight into John's beginnings and originality. Side one is acoustic fushion and side two is merely John alone playing acoustic guitar. A beautiful simple classic.

  • Thats really helpful and kind. thankyou :)

  • Incredible musicmanship! This is a composition called Lotus Feet written by John Mclaughlin in Raag Darbari. There is a widely published version of this piece on a two CD album called Remember Shakti Live recorded perhaps in 1992. astounding ! amazing..can't say it enough

  • sorry to say but this is not the lotus feet composition in darbari. They do have recorded the lutus feet at this very same concert. But in raag darbari it is! Good to know that there are people having a lot of interest and knowledge about good music!

  • Raga Darbari at its best. Hariprasad Chaurasia is truly a legend. Touched my heart so so deeply! Immersed myself in this raga.

  • awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee .... majestically awesome... please upload... more videos of pt. hariprasad chaurasia ... if possible..!!

  • simply the best...

also check Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on TRANCESITION on YOUTUBE

  • great stuff. live the love.

  • this is absolutely amazing!

    i'm speechless...

thank you so mucho for this video, hope i can find more stuff with this lineup...specially with Hariprasad Chaurasia

  • tx 4 uploading- i love it

  • great music, great percussion

  • i agree the sweetest sound i have ever heard. on a political note i wish the east and west meet like this. we both have great cultures and when we integrate it it sounds so much better.

  • This was so amazing!. Those sounds are amazing... Especially when stoned.

  • I AGREE WITH THAT MEEEN!

  • I don't recall seeing any JMG albums featuring this line-up. Have they recorded together? Is there a release of it?

  • Most of this line-up (minus Marielle) plays an all too short version of WBTG on the 1984 album 'Mahavishnu'. Being the days of vinyl, i think it was cut for reasons of time..shame!

  • All very amazing talents, i believe John McLaughlin, has cross strings, look at how he lowers his hand off the actual string location when he makes the sitar noise, he has a seperate string set going across the top body of the guitar.

  • he is using his famous shakti guitar... with a set of drone strings with fixed tunning... the same type of guitar in al the shakti records except remember shakti...

  • This appears to be a different drone string guitar to the one he used in the 70's. The 7 drone strings on the 70's guitar had tuning pegs and were tuned according to the song.

  • Furthermore - the neck is scalloped. A lot harder to play, AND a lot more expressive....

  • Absolutely divine! Thank you so much for this wonderful video.

By the way, it is Marielle and not Marille, and the instrument she plays is the tambura. :)

  • sorted :)

  • I noticed! :) What is amazing is the way John can make his guitar sound like a sitar, don't you find?

  • Another thing - the tambura Marielle Labèque is playing is the smallest one I've ever seen, it is tiny!

  • It is small and to be honest I struggle to hear it at all!! just his sympathetic strings.

John managed a very nice sitar sound back in 1970 on 'my goals beyond'. Just an ovation but I think he lowered the strings to the point of fret buzz, worked though.

  • I believe it is called the tampuri in Northern indian classical music

  • no. the traditional indian name is tanpura or tampura with sandhi rules. but the anglo-french name is tamboura. it can refer to various instruments from around the world.

  • kyabatae

  • Hariprasad Chaurasia is the most musical human on the planet.

  • Thanks for this. great video of a JM lineup I didnt know about
