  • 1992 to 2009. That's 17 years.

  • Hey may I ask where in the Mid-west is this? I had the same while in Indiana, Bloomington 2004 summer. So are there different batches of 17-year cicadas and each emerge at different times and on different locations(according to their own 17-yr cycle)?

  • i know this sounds weird but cicadas are soooooo cute !!!!!! <3<3<3<3

  • stupid!

  • I feel bad for cicadas -_-'

they live a boring life in the ground for 17 years eating root sap and other stuff and then they mate and die. :( Gods work at its best

  • @BrianHogs Yes and what is neat is that by the time the cicadas creep out of their shell and up the tree, they have mated, then the females scratch into the underside of limbs and lay their eggs, when the larvae are/is ready, they fall tot he ground and undulate below for 17 yrs... pretty amazing!

  • HARMLESS CICADAS ARE NOT LOCUSTS!!!!

Locusts are far more destructive, destroying all plant life in their path.

  • I used both =+ hits Confusion of what a cicada is is due to the possibility that when Christians settled in the Americas periodical emergence of billions of lg ravenous vegetation eating chirping insects drew parallels w/ biblical stories about plagues of locusts & so cicadas were referred to as locusts Periodical cicadas use safety in numbers survival strategy Each brood hatches in such large numbers they simply cannot all be eaten by predators so it is easy to see how people were confused
