My 92 Camry finally went bad at around 210,000 miles. We replaced her tranny, engine, and thermostat all within 3,000 miles. She's still running beautifully, and she was extremely reliable up until she passed 200. She's still going though! Probably for a long time to come with all the new parts =)
All of you guys. Shut up. You guys try to engineer cars that can do this. Keep in mind that they hooked the chains to the suspension, not the chassis.
If they want to test the structural rigidity of these chassis, maybe they should drop some Mercedes AMG engines in and see how these chassis' handle it.. then we'll be talking.. this video means nothing to me because I anyways think that a car should handle the weight of at least five times its own weight .. a Lexus can never compare with a Benz (or audi, bmw) chassis.. at least not anytime soon.. they should've put an s-class in front of the ls holding up all the other lexus'
can anyone tell me why are the engineers and etc. are all americans ?? I think it shouldve been japanese engineers and workers who worked on these cars.some people would mistake it for an american made car
@rivengle If they didn't support the rear end of the car while elevating the front end then they would have dragged the rear bumper across the pavement as the rear wheels left the ground.
"Reliability" should have as synonym "japanese technology". You simply look to their cars and you'll observ a large amount of old high-mileage japanese cars still going strong after 2 decades.
@DerAdventurer my wife's es 300 (1999 ) has 530000 km and still going strong - just recently changed 4 struts - no leaks , no transmission issues - pretty good i think - i tiny spot of rust on rear left fender ( less than 2 mm )
Japanese auto distribution system was stacked against importers- existing auto dealers were forbidden to sell foreign autos or to partner with foreign automakers.

Bah.... All this, and they still made it look phony in the advertisement with all the image processing. Why not use CGI then. Or even better: don't butcher the footage.
Hmm... so lexus cars' frame are made to withstand tension not compression.... hmmm.... i wouldn't want to be in it in a crash then. If i were to make a test to convince ppl that my car is strong, i would crush my car from both ends and see how much pressure it can handle before it starts to collapse on itself haha

@Budguy68 There is nothing physics involved though. I work with these cars on a daily basis and there is nothing different structurally. all I believe they did is increase the number of spot welds per vehicle. THis is nothing new to the automotive world fact it's been done to racing cars for millions of years. All you see here is a bunch phony's I did not have to go to usc for engineering to know how to improve the structure of a car either.
well they got all this crap done right, now make the car actually look good, i hate how lexus's look....the design is terrible, its like im getting another toyota
@JeremyandBilly this isn't even that complex of a concept. I am truly astonished to see the vast ignorance present in some of these comments... Glad someone actually understands what is going on here xD
After being in honors physics, i can say that this is a whole lot less impressive than they try to make it seem. And i also like how they go walk around and touch the car when it is under all that stress in their test with the trucks pulling the car apart, thats real safe. And lastly, to the speaker at the end, "tension" isn't a big word, stop trying to sound like your smart and like this experiment is a remarkable feat.
No one cares that you were in honors physics, and I'm sure the "physicists" (with college degrees and all) are still more than a little smarter than you. And it's unimpressive? They do stuff like this on a show called Top Gear, most cars would tear apart.
I was more impressed by the results of the stress test, and even that doesn't mean much for two reasons: they didn't test other cars, and they didn't measure the chassis before and after the test, to see if it had stretched at all.
Nice idea but the execution could have been better.
Their trying so hard to be serious and critical about this experiment. It's not a big of a deal -honestly-I bet you Ford and other strong cars can also pull this off. They made this advertisement look like Lexus is the only car that can pull this off. Also i think his experiment was a big waste of money-it wasn't that cool-not impressed. But credit for the LFA-beautiful car.
@hahahajman It's not that they're saying other cars can't do the same. It's just saying that other cars HAVEN'T done the same. Plus, that would have been a pretty fun commercial to make. How many people can say they've stung 5 cars up from a crane using only the first car's chassis for support?
@flipboy913 That's right. No other car manufacturer has had a recall. GM doesn't bother to do a recall. They'll wait til a significant amount of people to burn up in a car before conducting a recall.
@hydrolisk1792 Me too.......but how do you do that; you'd have to be a perfectionist in engineering! And yet I'm studying Mechanical Engineering right now, and I got C in both Calculus 1 and 2. I'm behind in my studies for Calc. 3.
How can one prepare themselves for an achievement like that? Thats like trying to make it into a sport team or something.
@755hp LOL, I know what you mean, engeneering is hard as it is. Trying to make it into the production @ Lexus is like trying to piss into a shot glass that is on a spinning record player, tied to a running cheetah's back while riding a unicycle blindfolded. :)
@hydrolisk1792 You know whats funny about what you just mentioned?? I bet you all of those moving factors you just mentioned can be put into an equation or formula (guess what). Even that is engineering (math and science) and its would be damn hard. - But I believe it can be done..........as long as the individual is in pursuit of their own perfection in life.
@hydrolisk1792 Well, about 10:00am today I called Lexus and asked if they had any career opportunities. They told me that one would have to look on the parent company's website (Toyota), that opportunities would be listed there (if any).
I saw engineering positions for "engine calibration", "drivetrain engineer", "Chassis Design Engineer" etc. These positions require mostly a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (with 2-5 yrs experience).
@Reaction92 A car is subject to wear and tear over time; it is only during that period of time that the rigorous test of true strength and performance is shown in a car.
Take for example, the Toyota Supra; no one (or very few) knew of the Supra's potential until at least 8 years after its production release (1993). And yet as time went on, the Supra's true strength and power-potential was realized.

are you telling me that when the engineers designed the framework of the car, no solid mechanic calculations were made? what about the stress analysis, how much tension and stress it can take?
but no, we have the hang the cars in the air to test it.
I mean yeah cool commercial but ... wow this is funny
Despite all possible calculations, you never know what will happen when you do something silly like that. I would agree that it's really not that impressive from an engineer's standpoint (and definitely humorous), but it's still something that wouldn't necessarily end up how everyone expects, no matter what calculation and testing had been done previously.
@blackmangoes The ignorance in you. They tested the cars with those tests under NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES. Maybe at most "worst case scenarios". Never would they have thought to test "Hey, can we hang 4 more cars behind it"? Thus why they had to do all these calculations and other precautions, and even then you can't be sure.
You mean to tell me that we should be surprised that solid steel can hold just as much weight as the small cables used to lift up all 5 cars? Big Deal... show me a car that can't do this...
Anyhow... nice attempt at trying to get us to think of Toyota without thinking of the sticky accelerator scandal.
@Raydude25 The thickness of the cables holding the cars from the crane is small relative to the thickness of the frame of a car. Considering that the cables hold the cars up just fine renders this demonstration completely unimpressive. Almost any car out there could handle that amount of weight.
@Raydude25 The suspension anchor is a thick piece of steel that is a part of the frame of the vehicle. The suspension anchor is not bolted onto the frame.
they don't show how they got the car(s) to stand on end. I know they didn't drag/scrape them on their bumper?! Behind the scenes wasn't enough behind the scene. I call BS. lol. I own a 03' LS btw. I love everything about it.
@easolo3 Uh... I'm assuming the uh.. you know, crane? There's a fun thing where if the crane is offset to the car when lifting (I.E the cable tension is above the car, not in front of it) it will go straight up. That, and I'm sure they used one or two jacks. (Look at 4:07 , you'll see.)
I wonder what they did with the cars at the end...

I would agree that it's really not that impressive from an engineer's standpoint (and definitely humorous), but it's still something that wouldn't necessarily end up how everyone expects, no matter what calculation and testing had been done previously.
mikagamix 1 year ago
@blackmangoes The ignorance in you. They tested the cars with those tests under NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES. Maybe at most "worst case scenarios". Never would they have thought to test "Hey, can we hang 4 more cars behind it"? Thus why they had to do all these calculations and other precautions, and even then you can't be sure.

Screw the tests, I'll take one, for free of course.

You mean to tell me that we should be surprised that solid steel can hold just as much weight as the small cables used to lift up all 5 cars? Big Deal... show me a car that can't do this...
Anyhow... nice attempt at trying to get us to think of Toyota without thinking of the sticky accelerator scandal.
mout12 1 year ago
@mout12 What "small cables"?
Raydude25 1 year ago
@Raydude25 The thickness of the cables holding the cars from the crane is small relative to the thickness of the frame of a car. Considering that the cables hold the cars up just fine renders this demonstration completely unimpressive. Almost any car out there could handle that amount of weight.
mout12 1 year ago
@mout12 Do you not know Where they stuck those cables, or are you just skeptic till the end ?
Raydude25 1 year ago
@Raydude25 on the chassis.. aka, the frame of the car. a thick piece of steel.
mout12 1 year ago
@mout12 Negative. They stuck it on the suspension anchors. Not a thick piece of steel, good sir. ( 2:50 - 3:00 )
Raydude25 1 year ago
@Raydude25 The suspension anchor is a thick piece of steel that is a part of the frame of the vehicle. The suspension anchor is not bolted onto the frame.

I think I know why they chose to hang is250s instead of 4 more LS

The hard way is how do we get them down?
sincedyone 1 year ago
If the cable can hold the cars, the chassy better hold it. Lexus is just making the obvious, seem like a unique miracle.
holwerdainc 1 year ago
"you can never relax around those cars." well that sounds promising! xD
NuMetal92 1 year ago
they don't show how they got the car(s) to stand on end. I know they didn't drag/scrape them on their bumper?! Behind the scenes wasn't enough behind the scene. I call BS. lol. I own a 03' LS btw. I love everything about it.
easolo3 1 year ago
@easolo3 Uh... I'm assuming the uh.. you know, crane? There's a fun thing where if the crane is offset to the car when lifting (I.E the cable tension is above the car, not in front of it) it will go straight up. That, and I'm sure they used one or two jacks. (Look at 4:07 , you'll see.)
Raydude25 1 year ago
maybe thats why the ls is so expensive
