Optimus Prime was always my favorite Transformer. Therefore, it is extraordinarily difficult for me to not be angry with Hot Rod. That being said, here are a couple of reasons I try to curb my vexation: 1.) Hot Rod attacked the shuttle first, if he didn't, the Autobots probably would not have won the Battle of Autobot City (2005). 2.) Later, Hot Rod controls the spacecraft (after Kup falls down) that destroys one of unicrons eyes. 3.) He lights the Transformers darkest hour.

I don't like the battles in G1 Transformers. They ara very much unbalanced. Optimus always kicks Megatron's ass without weapons. Decepticons are just lame fighters in G1 (and thats funny, 'cause they supposed to be the gladiators and the autobots just average citizens back on Cybertron). They just cheat, and get beaten up by autobots. They don't represent a real threat. These battles are soooooooo for children: the good guys always win.

IDW TF comics are the best, the battles feel real in them.

I'm not sure of the other autobots, but Prime is SUPPOSED to be the most powerful transformer, if for no other reason than having the power of the matrix flowing through him, increasing his strength and (supposedly) wisdom. I say supposedly, because in the fight with the spores when he was rebuilt (he was rebuilt as Optimus PRIME, not what he originally was before he got the matrix) he had the same wisdom and battle tactics without the aid of the matrix.

I love how this battle is still the subject of heated debates. Who really won. Everyone blames HotRod for getting in the way. It's likely Megatron would have squeezed off a shot or two as would Prime and they would both be dead. There are a lot of what if's hear what if Megatron had just shot Prime from the get go we wouldn't have wanted Prime to die so quickly. What if Megatron was fresh like Optimus would it have ended differently. What if Prime had just shot Megs that dosn;t seem very Prime

In all honesty, after watching this movie a million times, I noticed a couple of things regarding why Hot Rod actually WAS the cause of Prime's death.

1. Hot Rod has GUNS on his ARMS, why didn't he just SHOOT Megatron instead of tackling him like an idiot?

2. Prime had Megatron at gun point and was just WAITING for him to try and make a move. The moment Megs would've picked up that gun, prime would've left a smoking hole in the center of his head.

That and hasbro thought we'd by the new toys.

Including hound and sunstreaker. but to wipe out so many and show them all die one by one would take too long so most you just see wrecked in the background and that's all. Hasbro sucks, i know, but the movie was great anyway.

@TheNZNick Sorry to be so anal, but it wasn't 'virtually all of the gen1 Transformers' who were wiped out, but almost all from the first year of Gen 1 (and a few of year 2 - Insecticons, Constructicons, the three cone-head jets). The movie came out for the third year of Gen 1, to promote them - Gen 1 was still going until the early 90s. I do agree, though, it was a cruel marketing tactic, and I don't think it worked, especially as there were 3 Optimus toys in Gen 1 alone - he's now immortal!
