First off, I'd like to thank whatever person decided to give pre Alyson Willow the boot, and getting the best possibly person for this character. Second, watching this video is pure nostalgia. It's insane watching this, knowing what's going to happen in just a few short years for people. Cordelia as the queen bitch, and ending up as a freaking lesser god on Angel, Buffy going from weird new girl to savior of the universe, Pre-witch Willow, it's overwhelming. Thank you Joss Whedon.

it's so much better the one they used later but some parts they should redone like when buffy 1st comes in, why didnt joss include it and film it again. the characters are better now like willow, darla, and stuff but this is a better piolot and this should have been a special feature on the DVD, most of the lines are the same, some scenes are improved, i didn't know that there was an unaired piolot untill now.
I think they recast Willow because this actress just didn't have the right chemistry with Buffy and Xander and she did fall a bit flat in a few areas with her acting. However, I think they should have kept her on the show in some way (even for one episode) because she is good. Alyson has this sweetness and vulnerability about her and you really feel for Willow when she's hurting or in danger. Aly has great comedic timing too and who doesn't love funny Willow? Without Aly, there is no Willow.
LOL! OK, before you watch this, I suggest you drink a glass or two of wine. You will laugh and laugh through the whole damn episode. I don't think I've ever seen anything so hilarious! Yeah, it is a bit corny, but it's the semi-slapstick humor that makes it so funny. Just make sure you're not sober or you will take it too seriously.

the pilot is the episode that they use to pitch the series to the network. the pilot is also the first episode of the series (usually). in this case, the network told them to recast the character of willow - hence allyson hannigon - with a new pilot.... which was the first episode we see on tv. :)

Melissa, I heard Joss Whedon say that the actress who played Willow wasn't available when the show got picked up, so they HAD to recast. There was a long gap between making this pilot and starting filming S1. Tony Head was back in England filming something else (the arrogant magician in Jonathan Creek) but left after one ep because he got called back to LA to do Buffy. I thought she acted just fine, by the way.
Oh! I was only restating what I watched on behind the scenes stuff on the DVDs. They said the show almost didn't get picked up and the network asked to recast the character of willow. Where I saw them talk about the recast, was on the special features of season 6(I believe... Or .). It was called "Buffy: a show with a bite" or something like that... Sometimes I feel joss white lies about things to not slander anyones name.. I know Doyle from angel had a drug problem and was written off... Joss claims they wrote him off to show that main characters can die, but I have a feeling he was just white lying cause the truth is upsetting...
Doyle is puzzle; yes, we'll never really know. We know JW did that with Jesse, When did he decide to put Wes in Angel? Mr Denisof talked of being on haitus from Buffy, before JW had decided just how & when to bring Wes in. but It was known before the end of B S3... but when Tony Head first rang him he said "There's a couple of weeks work on this Buffy show, if you want to try for it" Was JW trying him out to find an English Watcher for Angel & replace Doyle (who was more like Whistler)?
Maybe that's why he said the "wasn't available" thing about the other willow.. Maybe he was telling the truth... All I know is she hasn't don't hardly much of anything and I can't imagine a staving actress not being available for an opportunity of lifetime... Ya know? Oh well, we'll never know for sure. Just our theories...

If you watch all of the epsiodes from the first season to season three, Willow isn't gay and in the vampire epsiode where the Lesbien Vampire Willow shows up, she's really more Bi-sexual than a lesbien. If Buffy had turn gay that would of made more sense because of her relationship with men.

Aw, I feel bad for the actress who played the first Willow; it's not her fault that she was mis-cast. Joss and co were obviously thinking along different lines for the Willow character at first, that she should be fat and dowdy. It just didn't work out when they reviewed it.

Turning Willow into a lesbien was the worst thing that could happen to her character. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Lesbian characters, but I just don't think it was right to make Willow gay just to get more people to watch the show. If they had turn Buffy into a Lesbian, I wouldn't have a probelm with that because Buffy sometimes acts more like a guy than a girl. But that's my own two cents.

Yes my own option, but the fact remains to have Willow all of a sudden became a lesbien after her boyfriend who was a weirwolf leave then she meets another girl and all of a sudden she is a lesbien, come on... If you watch the show from the first epsiode, Willow was a tom boy, but she always did like guys and was shy, then when she becomes a lesbien all of a sudden she trys to dress hot and sexy and be a wild lesbien girl.. Come on Joss made Willow gay only to get more people to watch.

Yeah, her acting fell pretty flat. That's too bad because it would've been nice to have an obese character in the mix. Aly was great and very cute, but I'm just saying.

I think it's a shame they opted for unhealthily thin all round, except maybe Cordelia who is nearer healthy. Tara looked positively chunky next to the emaciated others but she wasn't fat at all!
And it's just not realistic; surely high schools have a lot of overweight kids... we're always hearing there are so many.

So, this "unaired pilot." I take it this was the one Joss prepared to sell his idea to the networks in an effort to get the series on the air? I don't know the business, but is that how it works and is that what this is?

the pilot is the episode that they use to pitch the series to the network. the pilot is also the first episode of the series (usually). in this case, the network told them to recast the character of willow - hence allyson hannigon - with a new pilot.... which was the first episode we see on tv. :)

*nods sadly* Yes, because of course, we can't be having a main character who's overweight. Now, I have to admit the actress's performance fell awfully flat in places...but we both know that's not why the network asked for a recasting. Just look at these other comments. I have SO been curling my fingers away from my keyboard to resist getting in a flaming war!

Well, just remember, it was the network who asked to recast willow. I love Allyson hannigon and believe she makes the perfect willow, but I may have like the other girl too if they kept her on... There are pleanty of overweight people on tv, maybe they just thought willow would be better off thinner in the long run... Ya know? These comments by kids in here are their own opinions and some seem petty and immature. We don't REALLY know what was going through the network and joss's mind...

Melissa, I heard Joss Whedon say that the actress who played Willow wasn't available when the show got picked up, so they HAD to recast. There was a long gap between making this pilot and starting filming S1. Tony Head was back in England filming something else (the arrogant magician in Jonathan Creek) but left after one ep because he got called back to LA to do Buffy. I thought she acted just fine, by the way.

Oh! I was only restating what I watched on behind the scenes stuff on the DVDs. They said the show almost didn't get picked up and the network asked to recast the character of willow. I'm only stating what I saw and of course the truth sometimes isn't told exactly in those special features... Didn't mean to cause a stir... And the actress was okay, I definitely prefer Allyson, but that's probably cause I've already grown to love her as willow...

I lent my S1 DVD set & never got it back, grr, so I don't know now. NB: I said I heard him say that, I don't take that as 'Truth'. Mr Whedon does toy with us sometimes! Plus as you say we don't really know... You're right to say it might be just you're used to AH as Willow, & I think that's likely true for most people, really. I can see this girl as Willow, as the part was written: dryer. I like Miss H but her facial twitches can get annoying

Where I saw them talk about the recast, was on the special features of season 6(I believe... Or .). It was called "Buffy: a show with a bite" or something like that... Sometimes I feel joss white lies about things to not slander anyones name.. I know Doyle from angel had a drug problem and was written off... Joss claims they wrote him off to show that main characters can die, but I have a feeling he was just white lying cause the truth is upsetting...

Doyle is puzzle; yes, we'll never really know. We know JW did that with Jesse, When did he decide to put Wes in Angel? Mr Denisof talked of being on haitus from Buffy, before JW had decided just how & when to bring Wes in. but It was known before the end of B S3... but when Tony Head first rang him he said "There's a couple of weeks work on this Buffy show, if you want to try for it" Was JW trying him out to find an English Watcher for Angel & replace Doyle (who was more like Whistler)?

Maybe that's why he said the "wasn't available" thing about the other willow.. Maybe he was telling the truth... All I know is she hasn't don't hardly much of anything and I can't imagine a staving actress not being available for an opportunity of lifetime... Ya know? Oh well, we'll never know for sure. Just our theories...

@sheepythatfellinlove It's called "I Know." It's sung by Dionne Farris. It's one of my favorite songs. There's a refrain where she sings this gorgeous duet with her keyboard artist, too. I highly recommend that you get a copy. Maybe you can find it on iTunes?

about the willow/tara relationship, come on dude! didn't u ever go to college? full of experimentation, willow just found something she liked. she and tara had a very pure kind of relationship, till willow went all bad with the black magic. plus xander jilted her, then oz left, who wouldn't turn into a lesbian? especially one that was hooking up w/ amber benson. come on now! would u have felt better if they had put willow and buffy together? by the way, viewings didn't really increase after that

I don't care if the character of Willow is gay, but to have Willow turn gay all of suddent doesn't make sense.
If you watch all of the epsiodes from the first season to season three, Willow isn't gay and in the vampire epsiode where the Lesbien Vampire Willow shows up, she's really more Bi-sexual than a lesbien. If Buffy had turn gay that would of made more sense because of her relationship with men.

@LanaLilian I think that was just the way the shadows fell. I think that much was the same. And the vampire makeup. That was the same. And Sarah's and Nicky's wardrobes were the same. Oh, and Tony's, too. But, Charisma's was different. Not much, but...Gingham plaid Capri pants? Is that really something Cordy would wear? I'm not really one to keep up with modern fashion, but...was that really something teenagers would wear? That seems more Mom material to me.

Aw, I feel bad for the actress who played the first Willow; it's not her fault that she was mis-cast. Joss and co were obviously thinking along different lines for the Willow character at first, that she should be fat and dowdy. It just didn't work out when they reviewed it.

OMG this is HORRIBLE! I absolutely LOVE Buffy, but this unaired pilot SUCKS so bad! No wonder it is unaired... :P And the girl girl who played Willow is not only completely wrong for the part, but a painfully bad actress as well. Everything she says seems completely forced. And she also looks more like a teacher/grandma than a student!

Turning Willow into a lesbien was the worst thing that could happen to her character. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Lesbian characters, but I just don't think it was right to make Willow gay just to get more people to watch the show. If they had turn Buffy into a Lesbian, I wouldn't have a probelm with that because Buffy sometimes acts more like a guy than a girl. But that's my own two cents.

Yes my own option, but the fact remains to have Willow all of a sudden became a lesbien after her boyfriend who was a weirwolf leave then she meets another girl and all of a sudden she is a lesbien, come on... If you watch the show from the first epsiode, Willow was a tom boy, but she always did like guys and was shy, then when she becomes a lesbien all of a sudden she trys to dress hot and sexy and be a wild lesbien girl.. Come on Joss made Willow gay only to get more people to watch.
