  • Omg Jay Leno so young

  • Chilton & Bell <3

  • to clarify any misunderstandings o misconceptions, here is the That 70's Show theme facts. The actual Big Star song is not used at all. The first season used a version sung by a guy named Todd Griffin. The lyrics and basic lay down are the same but with some mods. A Cheap Trick cover is used from S2 forwad, and they added the "we're all alright" as an homage to their own song "Surrender". Chilton gets $70 per syndicated episode for royalties on the song for all episodes.

  • Jody's drumming is amazing

  • you know you're cool when you heard this song before you ever heard of that 70's show... it makes me love the show even more :D

  • what a great live version rythmn section great, sounds just like album version. 70's show pah cheap trick..This is a vintage momemnt from one of the great nearly made it's was a soundtrack to my schooldays discovering bands like this

  • Can they please get the people from that 70s show to sing it, sounds way much better than when they sings it.

  • @MrBradleyification the cast doesnt sing it, cheap trick did a cover of this song and that 70's show used it

  • @MissKilljoy16 actually i think they did in the earlier seasons because they didnt start using cheap tricks cover till later. i may be wrong though

  • @MissKilljoy16 Jeez, I thought that was Ashton Kutcher on lead vocals. Seriously, Cheap Trick was a (very good) band that was clearly influenced by Big Star, who were real pioneers in power pop.

  • That 70's show and Jay Leno....two of my favorite shows...

  • I like the that 70's show version a lot better

  • I am sorry, but I can only associate this song to That 70's show. I'm not saying it in a bad way, I'm saying it in a good way :) I love the 70's, the 60', 70's, 80's rock music, and I love That 70's show:)

  • That 70's Show <3

  • @TheJuzMii yes--several dozen people have mentioned that here.

  • You people seem to have no idea about Alex Chiltons talent. Listen to The Letter by The Boxtops that he sang at age 16

  • good song, but I prefere the Cheap Trick's version

  • Wasn't it great that Alex could have a marvelous second act?

    RIP

  • Jody on the tonight show and feeling nothin!!!!!

  • Great band This Line Up featuring Jon Auer & Ken Stringfellow from The Posies awesome,

  • I really regret being from Memphis and never haven seen the band play, or even him in person.

Big Star was awesome! Too bad they weren't properly promoted.

But the music speaks for itself, and Alex and the band have achieved cult superstatus.

To me... Alex Chilton was just as iconic as Jim Morrison. May he rest in peace

  • is that ben stiller

  • @Crackboy5 Try google

  • @Crackboy5 It was a session musician, Ben something or another, first season, then Cheap Trick from then out. They recorded a verison called "that seventies song," It's god awful. They call joints "numbers" a la Tom Petty and toss in the we're all alright bit.

  • Comment removed

  • @Crackboy5 Cheap Trick.

  • @KeatonB NO!!!

  • @Crackboy5

The group Big Star for the first season and Cheap Trick did the cover version as the theme song for That '70s Show from the second season onward.

  • @barryandlita I discovered that on Season 1 it was sung by Todd martin.

Thanks everyone for the info, although it was wrong XD

  • @Crackboy5 Cheap Trick

  • @Crackboy5 .... cheap trick

  • @sweetfly66 jesus, I wish I had never made this question!

Stop answering people! It was not Cheap Trick, it was Todd Martin! (1st season)

    Leave me alone ! :)

  • @Crackboy5 ... i wish mommy never shit you out ... how`s that

  • @Crackboy5 Todd Grriffin actually.

  • @Crackboy5 probably Big Star or Cheap Trick...Or some studio band covered it just for the show.

  • @Crackboy5 cheap trick

  • what year is this from?

  • Let me clarify, pottymouth: Alex's wife, Laura, said he did not get his heart checked out because he could not afford health insurance as a self-employed musician. What a tragedy. The world's former superpower needs to get with the program and make health insurance available for everyone.

  • Alex should have moved to Canada. We have free medical care here. What a shame. Rest in peace, Alex.

  • @Marky61

oh, really, marky? maybe you should get in line for a brain transplant.

nice try, dipshit. thanks for playing, canada.

  • RIP

  • jody is a machine, always gets a good tone on those drums. radio city may have my favorite drum sounds on all the records I own.

  • Bummer, missed another great show, this one, at The House of Blues,

whenever that was. Thanks for all the great tunes,Alex. R.I.P.

  • R.I.P Alex Chilton

  • I remember when I first heard Big Star in the 90's, I had a hard time coming to terms with the fact that they were from the 70's as their music refuses to age. Looking back at 1994 when I first heard it, I think that Big Star aged better than the music that was current then. Absolutely timeless!!!

  • I was fortunate enough to see this musical genius @ Centennial Olympic Park (ATL) few years back w/ the Flaming Lips.. It is a shame that most people don't even know who Big Star is.

  • When did this show 1st air? Great footage. Thanks for posting.

  • My baby sent me a letter about this clip.

  • What's that skeleton doing on the side of the stage? It's on the opposite side of the stage from Alex.

  • @MOTOPAC Maybe it's Chris!

  • They're playing it in D, as opposed to G (which it is on the record). Actually I kinda like it in D - it kinda turns the riff around in a cool way.

  • @MOTOPAC guess it is difficult to sing so high once you get to a certain age :) RIP alex

  • Sublime

  • Sound quality is really good, given that it was on the Tonight Show. Now, the sound levels are so off, it just sounds weird. While the singing style is not as extreme as the theme song version, it is really a good song with good drumwork.

  • Alex Chilton era o cara!

  • Friggin Brilliant!

  • nice to see chilton and co finally got the recognition they deserved, especially for this song

  • Jody Stephens is on fire!

I read in an interview that he called "That 70's Show" something like "That $70 Show" because that's how much he got paid every time the show aired.

  • Yep, this is looks like it's from the 90s. I saw the original Big Star at The Agora in Toledo, Ohio, in the early 90s. They opened for Ann Peebles. About 12 of us were at that show. I still have goosebumps from "September Gurls" that night.

  • what kinda guitar is alex playing?

  • I think it's a Gibson 175

  • @titostacos I think it is a wooden one with metal strings.

  • Good for the Posies (the other two guys on stage) for recognizing the genius of Alex Chilton and Big Star.

  • All that in 2:57. Genius.

  • This is definitely around the original time they reformed with Jon and Ken from the Posies, circa 1992-93, the tour that produced the Live album "Columbia"

Wonder how many people in TV-Land were thinking this was a brand new fresh super cool alternative power-pop band at the time.

  • I'd say this is 92.

NPR's "Fresh Air" just replayed a couple of Alex Chilton interviews on their podcast if you need it - of course you do.

    Heavenly voice. Goodbye A.C.

  • By Jay Leno's hairstyle, and lack of grey hair I say this is around '92/'93? This is Big Star promoting the greatest 2-in-1 rock CD ever "#1 Record/Radio City"? I was in college at the time when I made the purchase, and it blew me away. Alex Chilton took two of my favorite rock bands; (The Byrds, and mid 60's Who) and combined them, brilliantly. Kurt Cobain claimed he wanted Nirvana to sound like a mix of The Beatles, and Black Sabbath. He became famous, Alex Chilton shoud've been just as.

  • Now I know what the credit I could never see because it was going too fast on the That 70's Show credits is about. "The based on" is based on this guy and the original song that was used for the show's Theme Song. From a great and extremely popular show, and from one of the most interesting groups of the 60's and beyond, The Box Tops and now the latter known Big Star, it all comes to a tragic end, but a great epiphany and send off as well.

  • I remember taping this performance, after I learned of Big Star through a retrospective article by Rolling Stone, citing their influence on my generation. Of course I had heard the name Alex Chilton from the Replacemente tune, but it wasn't until I saw this that I knew he was The Man. R.I.P. Sir Alex, you made my life better.

  • RIP, Alex . :(

  • is this made for "That 70's Show"?

  • The song predated the show by 26 years!

  • Heck no. This is the real version. Cheap Trick took the song and cheesed it up for the TV show.

  • Thanks Alex , you left some great tunes behind .

  • what a performance

  • I came late to his party, but will miss him RIP

  • Everyone came late to this party..........it took 20 years for them to be on The Tonight Show.

  • RIP, Alex.

  • So long Alex.

  • He died of an apparent Heart Attack while on his way to the hospital. His wife drove him to Tulane Medical Center but just before his arrival he lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at the medical center.

  • @heyyouube11111

    what? lol.

R.I.P. Alex, your music is an inspiration to many!

  • @Grantalonus Styx is no laughing matter! gotta agree with you on AC as icon, tho.

  • Thank you, Alex Chilton.

  • I saw them play the next night at the HOB in Hollywood. Two great bands molded into one.Alex and drummer Jody from the original Big Star with Ken and Jon from The Posies. RIP Alex

  • I had a crap day, and this has just topped it for me. RIP Alex.

  • RIP Alex--and isn't Jody the coolest drummer?

  • R.I.P. mr. Chilton... :(

  • Alex Chilton RIP

  • R.I.P. Good man Alex

  • RIP Alex...all that's left now are the records :-(

  • sometimes covers ARE better. But the genius goes to both the performers and the writers. And I'm not saying Cheap Trick is better, it's just the one we're used to, thanks to the TV show.

  • Since the day we met in high school to this afternoon..it all went by so fast. Thanks for the musicm the friendship and the memories.

    Love you always xo

  • A-L-E-X C-H-I-L-T-O-N...

    gone.

    fuck.

  • R.I.P. Alex.

  • R.I.P. Alex.

  • FYI Cheap Trick covered this song, this is a Big Star original...boneheads!!

  • I wonder how many of the unwashed masses thought they were doing a Cheaptrick cover.

  • I don't know, but sadly many that have posted to my video here seem to feel the Cheap Trick version is better. As Peter Tosh used to say "You Gotta Know Your Culture."

  • Sad. Cheap Trick is one of my all time favorite bands, but the Big Star version is SSSOOOOOO much better (and, obviously, the original). I wish there was some older live footage of this band, though...

  • I totally wish there was more footage too.

Maybe the new box set will have some.

  • Comment removed

  • Probably not many, since the Cheap Trick version was years later.

  • @2vonranke lol..for real

  • that 70s show theme song was based upon this song,

part of its look back on the 70s

  • Cheap Trick does 70's version.

  • I was there,it was like that...

  • @dohyou That would be Jody Stephens, a true Good Guy.

  • I think you mean Big Star.

  • He's still got the voice.

  • jody stephens -- AWESOME drummer.

  • Alex Chilton and Mark Lindsay-the two forgotten geniuses of rock & roll !

  • don't forget about chris bell!

  • jody looks much younger than alex

  • i always love seeing how the host interacts with the band after the performance. it's a shame the video gets cut so soon. chilton is too fucking good. too many rock and rollers lose it after that long. not alex.

  • his name is alex chilton and, as far as i'm concerned, he's the only "god" in existence.

  • Children by the millions scream for him.

  • Power pop!

  • Big Star definitely belong in the R'n'R Hall of Fame--so what if they never had a hit.--Velvets never had any popular success either.

  • humble Posies backin' em up, uno...

  • THE BEST version of this tune.

The Original of course. ALWAYS love the 'original versions' more.

    Big Star, WOW!

Chilton and the band... simple and sweet.

    Simple but effect lead guitar.

    Beatles, Byrds, just as good.

    thanks Boys!

  • Big Star should be legends and inducted into the Rock N Roll of Fame!

  • They are Legends.

  • A ha! So this is where Teenage FanClub got their sound! Always liked TFC so going to check out more Big Star right now!

  • Jay looks awesome :)

  • Sweet. I like the complicated rhythm. I mean, it feels like the rhythm of the lyrics are somewhat fighting the rhythm of the instruments. I like it. Must've been a challenge to play and sing though.

  • that is the most beautiful fender coronado, that white one.

  • trues. except, damn, it's antigua!

  • what year was this? 1993?

  • 1994

  • moron

  • Anyone who digs Big Star need sto check out the Aussie band You Am I. Incarnate!

  • You need to check your spelling kid

  • Whoever gave this guy a thumbs down just cos he mentioned another band is a chump. You Am I ROCK, they're a great band. Check them out. And obviously I'm also a massive Big Star fan, that's why I'm here.

  • Great drummer JS

  • Is there any footage of Big Star from the early 70's? I can't find anything.

  • nope

  • yes there is. search "big star thank you friends" here on youtube. it's footage that chris bell and andy hummell shot during the making of #1 Record. priceless stuff.

  • A documentary on the band is being put together and word is that they have video footage of the band from the '70s. So be patient.

  • Get to know this band...that`s my advice....they made some great pop-records in 70`s all re-released in the 90`s. Big Star & Radio City Great band , great tunes.
