Tim's voice is superior in technique and tone. Plus, his version fits the play. The character is supposed to be innocent and seductive, and seductive is what Tim Curry does best!
damn oldman looked good back then! don't get me wrong so did tim curry, I do have to agree that mr curry rocks the song. But I have to say oldman and curry are both fracking awesome actors
Naw, Gary is a cutie, but Tim is just SEX! And when he said "More? You want more?" "Yes, my darling, yes" if I would be part of that conversation it would be in a completely different context, if y'all catch mah drift! xD
@SpiderXxPirate Sad, but true story. I had tickets to see Tim in Amadeus. When I got to the theater, I found out that he was on sabbatical for month while he was filming Annie. When I had tickets for Spamalot, I went to the theater 6 hours early, just to make sure he was there. He was and was absolutely amazing!
It's a hard choice, really... They both sound lovely. I might have to go with Gary here though, I don't know... there is just something about his voice here... and anyone who has scene the movie will say it's interesting... but there is an almost, innocence in his version of the song that I really like...
Love Gary, but I kind of like Tim Curry's version better. It's more intimate, but who cares, eh? Knowing that it's both Tim Curry AND Gary Oldman has got to be awesome. They're both amazing!
If that were me at 4:51 I would've broken character and pulled him right back to me lol Man I probably would've lost my job but it would've been worth it for kiss with tim curry lol :)
Oh my God, Tim curry's voice <3 He could sing me right to sleep. You can hear the love, and emotion so clearly in his voice. And I agree, tripilexx001, extremely seductive ;)
I am a big fan of both theese men. I think they do this song great, but I believe I like Gary's version the best because he is no trained singer, unlike Tim, and he usually doesn't sing, so it get's more interesting :)
I vote for Gary Oldman's Version, because he is my favourite actor *love* and the situation and relationship is more real to me. Tim Curry is great too ;)
The Oldman (1988) version is available as the DVD called 'Track 29', a reworking of 'Schmoedipus'. Only as far as I know, available in Europe - but it's on Amazon!
Yeah Tim deffinitely brings more to the song, and gives it less and more feeling at the same time. Gary's version is too cheerful, Tim's is more soft and sweet with underlinded passion.
I'm just like you. I heard Gary's version first, but I can't help but love Tim Curry's more. But they're both amazingly wonderful to listen to. Thanks for uploading!
Thanks a lot, Bonny! I didn't know it might be possible to find Rock Follies on Youtube. I mostly remember the fun and human warmth of Rock Follies, but I am surprised to see now what a lavish and grand production it was! Those staircase dresses, absolutely high-class! We didn't understand back then just how fantastic it was, did we? We just took it for granted. There hasn't been anything to rival Rock Follies in decades, now at last we understand! Thank you so much, Bonny!
Tim Curry's voice is incredible! I just listened to a tape from 1977 I made from television of the famous Shakespeare series. And I remembered every line. No chance of seeing any Shakespeare on Youtube. Tim Curry IS Shakespeare, so wonderfully eloquent, so incredibly intlelectual, so incredibly gorgeous and sexy! Can one get that series on video or DVD?
Thanks so much, BonnyBP, for letting me know. I'm just a few days late, aren't I! How stupid! I also had Tim Curry's lines from Rock Follies on tape (just an audio cassette since there were no VHS machines in those days), but it was almost inaudible. That's another wonderful series I'd love to get on DVD! Julie Kavner (something), and Miss Rula Lenska, and of course Tim Curry to whom their energy belonged! Fantastic! If you have any influence, Bonny, please make Shakespeare come back!
I'll do my best... in the mean time TC's Rock Folly Street Signs is still on the Tube. You'll have to be real quick with downloading things like that though! They disappear before you notice!
While I do love Tim Curry's voice and acting ability, Gary Oldman is absolutely spectacular. He is just such a diverse and talented performer-- but then, as is Tim.
Tim Curry all the way! he looks so sweet and his voice is perfect. so cute here...i'm sure his mother is very honored and proud. from what i hear she was a secretary and his father was like a priest or something. he's really made something of himself from chior boy to famous actor and singer! way to go, Tim!
idk i like them both, but prefer Gary... it's not as overacted.... sorry!!! i love Tim -- always have since I saw him in ANNIE as a 5 year old (i'm 27 now).... but - to me he belts it out in such a way it comes off as overacted... to ME... :/
(i know i'm gonna get flack for that, but it's MY opinion)
I just got track 29 today. I have had an *illegal* copy of the original for 5 years now, a friend in england gave me that one. allways loved it. but now I cant decide witch I like better.
tim curry vs gary oldman. thats a hard choise! ^^
but I like track 29 since its longer and darker. and mr. lloyd is splended, in the original, all actors but tim sucks bigtime
Curry and Oldman are two of my fav actors ever. Great seeing this comparison - both great in their own way - but I gotta go with Curry as the better of the two, this time ;0)
It's really interesting to see both versions side by side. As far as comparing them, I'm at a disadvantage in that I've never seen "Track 29". I CAN say, however, that Tim Curry's performance of the song fits perfectly into the whole tone of "Schmoedipus". To call it too sexual is to utterly miss the point...of COURSE it's sexual. It's supposed to be. If it makes the viewer uncomfortable, it does precisely what it's intended to do. And Tim's singing voice is divine. :-)
by the way. I havent seen both versions, only the one with tim (there are more than one copy and I have one) but I read somewhere that gary didnt manage to make the caracter both as sexual and terrefying as tim did it. but then again, I have not seen both of them. but the one with tim is brilliant, he manage to get right between adorable and scary in a splended way
Tim Curry is amazing. Although I like Gary's, its very hard to beat a voice like Tim's. I love the looks he gives her, and his accent when he says "alright then"
Iam a Gary Oldman fan so obviously I love him singing . Tim did a good job but everytime I hear him sing I think of when he played the villain "Rooster" in Annie
What's interesting is that Anna Cropper - the mother in Schmoedipus (the Tim Curry version of the story) was only 8 years older than Tim! She was born 5/13/38, and died in February of '07.
To be fair (although I favour Tim Curry's rendition) I believe each version is influenced by the times. Tim Curry's original version fits with the early 70s in England, and Gary's is adequate with America's late 80s. Different trends and different performances adapted to the times.
Tim Curry sings it better. He has the most unique sound to his singing and speaking voice. When he sang it he brought forth feeling from it and made it feel believable. I like Gary Oldman but his version seemed too distant and cold. His performance just felt detached.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! Sacrilege!!!!!! Oh dear, a rush of blood went to my head :) Hehe, that is your opinion, which is fine, but...... (read with a kind tone of voice now) You are so, so, so wrong... :)
"Gary Oldman has a far better singing voice and vocal range."
In what universe? ;-) Sorry, totally disagree. Tim Curry's voice has a power, vibrato and richness that Gary Oldman's just doesn't. You may not care for Curry's delivery, but it suits "Schmoedipus" perfectly. Maybe Oldman's does for "Track 29", I wouldn't know, but it wouldn't have worked nearly as well in "Schmoedipus".
I love 'em both. Fans of both actors. Bit more of an Oldman fan...but I saw Tim as King Arthur in Spamalot...from the front row/center...and I've had a healthy admiration for him since. He's amazingly talented.
But I prefer Gary's here...because...it's Gary. And I love him like a fat kid loves cake.
Tim's is the best- of course! =) I'm glad you kind of explained what the movie is about, 'cause I saw this video a couple of months ago and thought it was REALLY creepy if they were really supposed to be mother & son.... As for Tim- he's got the sexiest voice I've ever heard. I wish his music career was more extensive than it was. I've been lucky enough to collect just about every song he's ever done, and they're incredible. Such a wide array of genres. He's wonderful and I love, love, love him!
Wow. As much as I love Gary Oldman in whatever he does, there is simply no question as to who has the best rendition of this song. Something like this truly shows that even outside of Rocky Horror, Tim Curry owns in the darkly & sultry song department. Fantastic upload!
Just in case someone is interested in the sheet music in order to play this old tune on the piano, please read the full description for this video on the left, below 'About This Video' you will have to click on 'more' in order to open the complete info and at the bottom I added a website where you can find really good scans of the music and lyrics.
does anybody know where I could get the sheet music for this song free. i need it for my singing exam and i'm not old enough to own a credit card so i really can't spend anything and i need it fast, HELP!
I wish I could help you, the only place on the net where I found the sheet music (a long time ago) was a commercial site so it was only available if you purchased it. I needed it too some time ago and had no luck at all. I will take a look to other online source and will let you know. When do you have your exam?
Click on the video's info (MORE) at the top right and you'll find what this story is all about, obviously it plays with that mother-son love/hate relationship. Although this story is not exactly the same, for is the mother's imagination creating this adult son and all the flirting going on. She killed him as a baby. Heh, click on 'more'.
I agree. It might be because of the contrast; he starts really sweet and soft and then, with the second verse, he switches into this very threatening and dominant persona with a powerful and loud voice.
Yes! Thank you! It's like I said before: "His version of that song just sounds so...wrong, considering how sexual his singing is. I don't know whether to be turned on or sick."
There are countless variations of this song, many artists have been adapting new lyrics with this tune, but I don't know of any more 'mother' interpretations. Now it only comes to my mind that Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra did sing this song together but with different lyrics in the film Anchors Aweigh' (1945). The song is over 100 years old and the composer was Theodore Morse.
I've just found 11 more versions of 'MOTHER' !! The list is not complete, for it does not include Tim Curry and Gary Oldman's versions. (Check your messages, the link is there)
I too am a big fan of both actors. I don't know if Curry plays and instruments but aside from all his musical theatre and films, he recorded 3 albums that I know of...because I have all of them. 1) fearless 2)read my lips 3)simplicity. Gary Oldman also sings on the sid and nancy soundtrack.
I had no idea Track 29 was a remake either. Thanks very much for posting this information! It was very interesting and I absolutely love Tim Curry. I do lean towards Gary's version though but that is just because of my personal "obsession" with the man.LOL
In a radio interview he did back in 1979(while on tour)someone asked him if he played any instruments. His reply was that he played about 4 chords on the piano and no one would want to pay to hear him play.
'Track 29' is a bit more popular because there is a VHS and it's been on TV a few times. Somehow most people assumed it was an original film. Schmoedipus is a quite a rare gem. If I would live in NY I'd go today to watch it.
How can I possibly choose my favorite???!!! OK, I pick...Tim's voice and Gary's face. Fair? :)

Oldman's version is good, but Curry's has a very, very creepy quality to it. It makes more sense in terms of the whole "Oedipal complex" thing.

I've been a fan of Gary Oldman for so long! But I must admit that Tim Curry's version is far better.

Tim Curry version, obviously. :)
He does a kind of Al Jolson "mammy" thing at the end of the song, when he changes from soft and sweet to a cabaret-esque performance. He is SO cool.

The Gary Oldman Version of course.
bethblasius 3 years ago 4
This is actually from the movie Track 29. The entire movie is creepy and disturbing, yet brilliant!

Wow. As much as I love Gary Oldman in whatever he does, there is simply no question as to who has the best rendition of this song. Something like this truly shows that even outside of Rocky Horror, Tim Curry owns in the darkly & sultry song department. Fantastic upload!

Just in case someone is interested in the sheet music in order to play this old tune on the piano, please read the full description for this video on the left, below 'About This Video' you will have to click on 'more' in order to open the complete info and at the bottom I added a website where you can find really good scans of the music and lyrics.

does anybody know where I could get the sheet music for this song free. i need it for my singing exam and i'm not old enough to own a credit card so i really can't spend anything and i need it fast, HELP!
brandnewyork48 3 years ago
I wish I could help you, the only place on the net where I found the sheet music (a long time ago) was a commercial site so it was only available if you purchased it. I needed it too some time ago and had no luck at all. I will take a look to other online source and will let you know. When do you have your exam?
eleanorpowell2007 3 years ago
in like a month.

God, what a gorgeous voice Tim Curry has. He makes me melt!

Yeah. His version of that song just sounds so...wrong, considering how sexual his singing is. I don't know whether to be turned on or sick.

Click on the video's info (MORE) at the top right and you'll find what this story is all about, obviously it plays with that mother-son love/hate relationship. Although this story is not exactly the same, for is the mother's imagination creating this adult son and all the flirting going on. She killed him as a baby. Heh, click on 'more'.

turtleboy689 4 years ago
not only can he sing, he can also play the piano!
alspence 4 years ago
the tim curry one is by far the creepier of the two
Melaku 4 years ago 2
I agree. It might be because of the contrast; he starts really sweet and soft and then, with the second verse, he switches into this very threatening and dominant persona with a powerful and loud voice.
eleanorpowell2007 4 years ago
actually I think he's just naturally creepy

Yes! Thank you! It's like I said before: "His version of that song just sounds so...wrong, considering how sexual his singing is. I don't know whether to be turned on or sick."

Does anyone know of someone else who has sung this song[m.o.t.h.e.r]other than these two men?
mamy101 4 years ago
There are countless variations of this song, many artists have been adapting new lyrics with this tune, but I don't know of any more 'mother' interpretations. Now it only comes to my mind that Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra did sing this song together but with different lyrics in the film Anchors Aweigh' (1945). The song is over 100 years old and the composer was Theodore Morse.
eleanorpowell2007 4 years ago
Thank you very much for the answer.I will do some research.
mamy101 4 years ago
I've just found 11 more versions of 'MOTHER' !! The list is not complete, for it does not include Tim Curry and Gary Oldman's versions. (Check your messages, the link is there)
eleanorpowell2007 4 years ago
I too am a big fan of both actors. I don't know if Curry plays and instruments but aside from all his musical theatre and films, he recorded 3 albums that I know of...because I have all of them. 1) fearless 2)read my lips 3)simplicity. Gary Oldman also sings on the sid and nancy soundtrack.

thina82 4 years ago 2
I had no idea Track 29 was a remake either. Thanks very much for posting this information! It was very interesting and I absolutely love Tim Curry. I do lean towards Gary's version though but that is just because of my personal "obsession" with the man.LOL
Icegoaliemom29 4 years ago
does anybody know if Tim does play the piano?
tallyrulz 4 years ago
In a radio interview he did back in 1979(while on tour)someone asked him if he played any instruments. His reply was that he played about 4 chords on the piano and no one would want to pay to hear him play.
tcfan123 4 years ago
thank you
i would pay to hear him play ;)
tallyrulz 4 years ago
I dont know about the piano, bur I do know he speaks perfect frenche. and then again, is there ANYTHING he cant do?
thina82 4 years ago

tallyrulz 4 years ago 5
I totally didn't know Track 29 was a remake either! Cool!
Knoxvicious 4 years ago
'Track 29' is a bit more popular because there is a VHS and it's been on TV a few times. Somehow most people assumed it was an original film. Schmoedipus is a quite a rare gem. If I would live in NY I'd go today to watch it.
eleanorpowell2007 4 years ago
Yeah, Gary's version appears in a movie called Track 29...I didn't know it was a remake!
