History for some of you who seem not to know: 1) this song was written with no historical caricature in mind.2) David Kincaid found that by an interesting happenstance there was a real (Irish) Cpt. Taggart in the American Civil War who's story is eerily similar to that described in the song.

@TheMikeBravo "Taggart" was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The most interesting and creepy thing about this song is that it was composed a long time after the Civil War, so Captain Taggart was a just a name picked out of a hat and injected into this song. It was later found out that a very real Captain Taggart actually existed, who commanded an Irish brigade and died in the very same manner depicted in the song, during the US civil war. A very eerie coincidence.

The Irish Brigde in the American civil war was very conneceted to Irish rebels. Its leaders were vetrens of the Young Irelanders Rebellion, many Irish vetrens of the American civil war orgainzed and fought in the Irish-American invasion of canada were some men wore IRA patches on their sleeves and also fought in the Irish Rebellion of 1867 in the Irish Republican Brootherhood.

granted it was a American Civil war era song. many irish on both the north and the south were fighting to establish, in their view a government that would back a united ireland cause. as well as gain the combat experience and tactical knowledge required to go back to Ireland to fight a war against England.
considering this is the first Union, irish song i've heard very good. would have been nice for some other images though.
