To me, this marked the beginning of the end for SB. Mary's death was bad enough, but I couldn't stand how the writers destroyed the character of Mason afterwards.

And I agree with that earlier commenter--if only the writers had given Julia the big C, I never could stand her.

This scene still gives me a lump in the throat after more than 20 years. But it also reminded me how mindless SANTA BARBARA could be at times, by getting rid of characters viewers loved. The same could be said for the show's treatment of characters Hayley (Stacey Edwards), Caroline (Lenore Kasdorf), and a multitude of others senselessly killed off to create cheap thrills. Mary's death on SB was one of the major death knells for the show, and Hayley's was the final blow.

I know there are 'Mary' fans out there but I never liked her. Never thought she was quite the good person they tried to make her out to be. When she came back as an angel made out of fire and ice I was like, 'Come on!"

I had read about this scene and had always envisioned:

1.) The "C" to be MUCH bigger than it actually is.

2.) The C falling many stories from above and crashing on her head.

3.) That we would see it fall on her.

I am disappointed. :(

It was an awful show, wasn't it? The sets were soooooooo cheap and echo-y. I don't think the sign actually fell on her, just the camera zoomed in on it.

Agreed. I understand why they did it and it did end up being for the better for the show. Had Mary not died, we may never have had Mason & Julia and Nancy Lee Grahn may not have become the daytime star that she is now and deserved to be.

It was 1986, mind you, and she stands there because she cannot hear the sign due to the yelling and heavy winds. And if you watched the clip (which you did apparently) then you're in no position to point out what morons they are, especially since you fail to mention all of the caution signs that are up & surrounding the giant "C".
