this was a very tragic accident. Today, they do shut down the park in weather like this, people are tossed out of the national park campgrounds and left on their own to find other places to stay. They also shut down the park loop road that runs along the edge of the ocean. People die in this area of the park every year, without a bad storm, so shutting the park down because of a bad storm is crazy. Do away with the national parks, then no one will die in them.
What kind of a person would "dislike" this video. Were you hoping the persons weren't rescued or something. I mean, join the human race and get a heart. This was an amazing rescue by the Coast Guard. And those that "disliked" this video, maybe you'll find yourself in this position one day, and you can give a thumbs down to being rescued then.
@rantstudio66 thats what timmy watson used to say and he was my crapyiest rescue worker EVER. finally had to cut him free as he just wasnt build for the sea i says. timmy would be bouncin their heads off the galley planks sayin, "i got em in the boat didnt i?" with this stupid freakin grin on his face, yeah thats the one. you and timmy will never understand a good rescue!!
Why does God have to be involved with everything? God didn't make those men and women who rescued them have the courage to go in after them. If there was a God there would be no wave in the first place. And plus if your quoting one of the greatest human minds of all time... make sure you do not have any typos.
Had to hold my breath through this video. Great work on the part of the rescue workers. Beautiful place but even in nice weather you can always experience that rogue wave that catches you by surprise.

Evil is the result of what happens when mad does not have God's love present in his heart."- Albert Einstein
Sadly Clio Axilrod age 7 passed away, her father Peter and mom Sandra are still in ICU and unable to even have a funeral for her yet . Info relayed as Clio was niece of Algebra teacher.
The comb. of the tide coming in, new moon tide, and Bill's REALLY large waves (20 to 25ft) set the scene for this tragic event. Rangers were doing what they could to ensure people were not at risk, but there were too many. As the waves grew, this family, and the others decided to move back, however, this paticular wave surprised them entirely.
This is simply a tragic event that could have happened to anyone. My thoughts and prayers are with the Axilrods and the loss of Cilo...
1) I am the guy who shot the video. Shot over 30 min. of footage of this guy in the water and other wave action. He was in the 55 degree water for 60 min.
2) He, his wife and daughter, and 4 others were on a ledge about 15 to 20ft above the water.
3) high tide was around 1:30pm, plus it was a new moon tide, which means they are higher than normal. The REALLY large waves from Bill did not start arriving until this first wave that washed them off the rocks
apparantly the large waves have been blamed on Scotland by the media (Fox News), because they released the terrorist, as a result americans are planning a boycott on all scotish goods especially large waves as the ones seen in the video,
poor little girl died because her dad wanted to get close enough to see the big waves. i can't believe the park would allow this to potentially happen. now the dad has to live with this for the rest of his life.
seriously? i agree this is a major tragedy but to propose the state disallow individuals the right to witness natures power and beauty or live with a sense of adventure even at risk to our own personal well being to me is - disheartening to say the least. how far are you willing to go to protect me from myself? what if im content living with my mistakes no matter the outcome - would you still feel the need to control my desire to enjoy observing nature? will you ban adventure sports too?
What about personal responsibility? Stand back and admire nature from a greater distance. This was not the fault of the National Park Service, and I don't blame her parents; lord knows they're second guessing plenty. Accidents happen. Tragic, yes, but true. Nature is powerful, and because it's beautiful, the strengths that natural phenomena have are often overlooked or forgotten.
Coast Guard did a great job in what looks like very, very rough conditions. From what I've heard it sounds like this family did themselves in by not abiding by the posted warning signs. On the flip side, as dangerous as it was and as many people who flocked to the area to watch the surf, the Park Service should have had a ranger stationed at the area. I know there's a lot of coastline in Acadia for Rangers to watch, but this is a popular spot that should have been given more attention.
Having lived my whole life here in FL, I have been through many, many hurricanes. I may go out from time to time during a storm to see if that tree branch I have been worried about is actually going to snap and come through my roof, but the absolute LAST place I have ever even thought of going is in or near the beach when the surf is crazy from a storm's effects. What useless idiot not only goes himself but brings two small kids too? Moron.
The storm wasn't in Maine, it was hundreds of miles out to sea. People came to see the storm surge, which baffles me, but I've lived by the ocean long enough not to ever want to put myself in the path of those waves.
Indeed, I looked at every spot on Acadia, no one surfed after lunch. Standing on the cliffs we could hear the rocks being tossed around. Nothing like Fabien was, totally closed out. Little did I know that after I left, a big sleeper set pulled a girl off the rocks @ thunder hole. The ocean is the most beautiful thing we have in Maine, however it must be respected. Thank god people don't come when the big Nor'easters pound everything for days. If you get sucked off the rocks. Swim OUT!
Amazing rescue. I've been to Acadia 7 times and have never seen waves like that, even at Thunder Hole. I wish I could have been there to witness the spectacle, but I'd have kept my distance - too dangerous! So tragic about the little girl!
I've spent every summer of my life in Acadia - my fam has a house in Southwest. If I added the hours I spent at Thunder Hole, it would probably add up to months - one of my favorite spots EVER. The walkway was closed, but these people ventured out from other rocks and paths. My heart is broken for the 7yo girl from New York who died...that's where I live. My husband, daughter and son were soaked at T-Hole at mid tide (yes, we were behind railing) & I'm now grateful that we were unharmed.
Wow! Naturally my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, friends, and families, but it concerns me about people's motives for venturing out so close to the onset of hurricane rogue waves. I've spent the last two summers camping in Acadia and saw a teenage girl nearly swept away right next to Thunderhole. Please be safe! The ocean there is 55 degrees and the currents are strong and unforgiving. The granite shoreline is covered in sea kelp, barnacles, and mussels. Pretty scary stuff!
There was a Coast Guard Jet airplane and CG Hellicopter, they arrived later at around 1 or 2pm searching overheard for people. I was glad to see that these people were working so hard to save the lives of others while risking there own.
But that female could not have been 7 years old; my daughter is 7 and takes swimming lessons and would not have last 2 minutes out there; I would not have lasted much more than 5 min.
But when the guy finally got on the boat, we all let up a big cheer, though it was not quite what it might have been, after all we had to watch for the better part of an hour. Also, there was no jet over head, like some accounts say, and I never saw any helicopter either. We stayed until the CG cutter left.
there was a coast guard jet (falcon) and a cg helo on scene just after the 47 arrived. the helo is what originally spotted the 7yo about a mile away from thunder hole. the 47 left to bring the 14yo and the older man back to seal harbor for an ambulance then returned immediately
Glad to see that everyone's okay and (being from West Texas) have never given enough thought to the amazing work done by the Coast Guard - bravo! What a scary, scary surprise for all involved today.
I pray that it was only the one; but we all saw 3 people in the water, drifing out over the swells, and the little waves in the video near the boat were nothing, look at the last 5 seconds of video, THAT was close to what was goign on. I had to lend my binoculars to a park ranger for a while, and lost sight of the 3rd swimmer when that person was 200 yards offshore, but the other 2 were, at times, close enough that they must have spoken to each other before the one went down.
It was hard to believe that he could have held out so long but he floated on his back and eventully seemed to get a lobster bouy and got it between his legs. We heard that there was a 7 year old and her dad that went down, but unsure who he was. Only saw guard pull out the one, the others must have been below us to our right, pulled out by people that managed to get tem from teh shore, though that itself would have been a miracle. He was lucky that he got caught in a "calm" spot between "Old Soaker" and the hole, but it still took the Coast Guard about 45 (or longer) to show up.
I was there today at Thunder Hole, right by the rail of the hole. We were having a good time watching the waves, when I saw 3 pp in the water about 100 yards to the south. I thought I saw a 4th, but not sure. My wife thought I was joking! They started to drift out farther, towards the rocks that are called "Old Soaker" They were riding what must have been 25 ft swells, it was terrifing to watch and not be able to do anything.
bringing him in to windward so he gets swept toward the boat - instead of the boat being pushed toward him by the wind and crushing him. nice work. i've had many discussions at sea about how to bring someone aboard in an emergency.
