Oh and by the way, this old prick did his National Service in the jungles of Malaya, what tales can you tell your grandkids, or in your case from the tone of your letter, future grandkids.
bacontrevor, Because the use of old English terms is in danger of dying out, that's why, do you know what it is in Lancashire that we call 'cloyes, shoon, jackbit, ganzi, praetes, brid-neesing,' do you fuck and that is what I am trying to preserve, even though I have a degree in English I still love the old terms.
I have been metal detecting for nigh on forty years and the abuse and vitriol we got from archaeologists in the early days was unbelievable, they even had cartoons picturing us as demons sneaking on to scheduled sites in the middle of the night, thankfully, as around 90% of the most important discoveries have been made by detectorists they have modified their views somewhat and now see us as an essential part of the archaeological scene, well, most of them anyway, some jealousy still remains.
Aww man, i get shivers down my spine with this sort of stuff, there is nothing more precious then the relics of our ancestors. I hope he keeps the coins and pass them on to the most responsible and patriotic of his offspring.

@jbearden modern change would be as old as that coin before archaeologists decided to look there. Metal detectorists do site research on the field as well as through the books. I have found homesites not listed on any map. You keep the trowel and paint brush, we'll just show you where to dig.
hello VAOvideo ummm r you actually trying to be funny? they might be sleuths but they declared it and it has been put in an historical context and not under some car park ,house ,road ,railway or churned to bits by a plough , i cant belive you let jbearden,s post be around this, oh well freedom of misunderstood speech goes along way hay '-'

Metal detecting is ruinous to precious cultural resources. It damages and destroys critical archaeological information by destroying the archaeological CONTEXT.
It's very destructive, and fueled by money often, and greed. But what it takes away from the people's history can never be measured, and they don't have the right to do this, not ever.
@malcolm9001 There is no British tresspass law. You can be arrested for detecting on a protected site and obviously for theft if proven. You can also be fined for detecting where Bylaw prohibits. Hence My detector is matt black and I wear dark camo for detecting local parks at night and have a specialy made headset that only covers one ear. :)
