I also use the Spyderco Sharp Maker. I usually end up with a small micro-burr on one side. I just yesterday made a strop from a 5 gallon paint stir stick, scrap belt leather and various compounds. I have an issue with the sharp maker and very thick back bevel knives like the SRK, Esee and Beckers. I need to figure out a way to get a higher grind so they do not resemble a chisel. I will try your method today on my F1 and Dozier Bush Craft knives. Thanks for the vids.
Thanks for putting this together. I just received a few strops and the black, green, and white compound. Looking forward to finally having really sharp knives.
Hi, great vid. Learned a lot! I be making my own strop. Just had a question. I got an Fallkniven F1 with 3G steel. Any advice on what's the best angle i should use when I sharpen it? And since it's harder steel, do i need to put more pressure? Thanks you.
Thanks a lot, this clip was really great. I never considered the green paste to be the stroping agent. I figured it gotta be some kind of wax to protect the leather, lol. I think you can imagine how much stuff I used to smear on my stropping leather Oo. I have to tell though, that my leather (I bought it for my shaving knife) already came with tons of paste on one side.
will post a video on how to sharpen your knife with a stone (i.e. the step before stroping)? It would be great to just have to buy one stone with maybe two sides. Do you have any suggestions on which to buy (oil/diamond/water)? Thanks!
@InsertGun hey man, 5K or 10K japanese waterstone. when stropping with dmt stones, I go to the XXF stone before stropping at 6micron, 3 micron and 1 micron to get a mirror finish
Hi! I have a Fällkniven S1 and i wonder how long and how wide your strop is? Iam thinking of making my own strop because the DC4 isnt so good for konvex grind. Do you have any suggestion on strop length/width for for a S1?
@Skrattmannen91 you can make it any length you like, it's a matter of preference and how you like to strop efficiently. Bigger strops means less strokes but also more abrasive material on the strop to cover the surface
I don't trust the yanks sharpening shit to go and kill a frog for dinner with, but when a European talks about microns he obviously knows what's what. Thanks for the vid
I have been sharpening knives for almost 30 years. I use an old fashioned tri stone, and get arm hair shaving results with that, but I would like to see what would happen if I finished with a strop. I have always wanted to see a demonstration of it, and thanks to you, now I have! Very nice work, sir. Thank you.
When you stated that stropping must always be done at 90 degrees to the edge, was that for beginners, or do you always adhere to that rule? I've found that the more and different knives, surfaces, and compounds/abrasives I use, the more I can get away with in terms of deviation from the "rules". With certain knives and strops I cannot do it at 90 deg due to certain factors (knife design, strop/knife size) and end up doing a sort of up-down-zig-zag movement, always edge-traling though. Thanks!
@KarlMaldensNose I try to keep to that rule. The better you get, the more you can allow yourself to be sloppy, since sloppy is still better than when you began... But consistency and the way the metal is polished will still help you with sharpness. If there are limitations because of the knife/strop, so be it :) you can try to make different ones though.
These day I use dmt diapastes though and also begin with the tip first then slide towards the handle, I find I am more consistent with that..

Buy a Levi belt and stand on one end and strop the blad, I do this to knock off the bur and to finish polish.

Thank you for the Great video, I learned a lot and the angle reference is an easy looking way to keep the edge equal. Thanks again.
