  • After years as an Ubuntu fan, I've had to abandon Ubuntu because of Unity. I hate it. Let's face it, it's a poor man's implementation of Apple's dock and launchpad. It's clumsy and a screen real estate hog. I use Macs all the time, but have been waiting for Apple to abandon the dock and give me something more Gnome-like. How depressing to see Ubuntu give up a superior interface in order to emulate an inferior one.

  • @GeodesicGnome I was also very angry last year when this has showed up on my desktop. Fortunately I could log off and during log back on, I could change the interface from Ubuntu (Unity) to Ubuntu Classic (Gnome) and never saw Unity again.

  • I mean what's the point of the development team at GNOME sweating day and night to develop their brilliant desktop when the PHILISTINES at Ubuntu are just going to SLAP A TACKY SIDE PANEL GUI ONLY FIT FOR HALFWITS ALL OVER IT?!

  • Comment removed

  • i download it when it takes less CPU usesege which will no no time soon i only got one cup and it only 20% usage in windows when playing you tube in this it in its 50

  • i surprise myself that i am starting to use windows more and more because of the drastic changes mark canonical implemented for this build... Mint or opensuse?

  • OS X is the best

  • @VirtualSpoof and my ass smells flowers.

  • @VirtualSpoof lol. sarcasm?

  • @VirtualSpoof Only for the mentally challenged.

  • I use ubuntu 11.04 but I use classix desktop :D

  • @NewKeepSharing31 Ubuntu is good distro :D

  • cocain is a helluva drug

  • @ebutuoymp3 you want Tom Cruise videos

  • I love you so much linux. Shame I'm not using you right now, but one day!

  • i love this.

  • And to clarify, I know the entire community isn't like that. It just seems like it due the 'Vocal Minority' phenomenon (though I'm not so sure it's a minority).

  • I've been contemplating switching to Ubuntu from Windows, but after what I've seen from the Linux community, I might change my mind. There's nothing but complaining about.. everything. Couldn't people just install Gnome if they don't want Unity instead of whining about it? I'm downloading Gnome as I write this to see what it's like. I mean, damn people, you're getting a quality OS for free and you still complain. It's like getting a house for free, then complaining about a draft.

  • Unity is a steaming pile of shit... worse than Gnome 3.

  • I have just installed Ubuntu today. I felt Ubuntu is good, but the window auto-resizing feature is bad because the manual resizing doesn't work after a window is resized automatically.

  • Well, ubuntu, I knew thee well. I loved thee, and I cared for thee. But now I must leave thee. Because I won't fucking accept this unity bullshit which stops me from customizing my entire desktop in a million different ways. In ubuntu 10 I could make my desktops unto a fucking CUBE! I could make windows 3D on that cube! Or I could choose not to. Instead of a cube I could have a ball. If I wanted to. I could make a trail of fire, rainbows and pixie dust follow my cursor whereever it went.No more.

  • can i remove unity and make it look like ubuntu 10.044? i got confuset with these

  • i like it. Whatever is better than crappy Windows.

  • so it isn't gnome anymore? wtf. this seriously pushed me over to fedora.

  • so it isn't gnome anymore? wtf.

  • wth is the point of the desktop?!

  • @noonebutjim Ubuntu's strategy seems to be to attract Apple users-losers, who have lots of cash and are an easy target. Changes in this direction have been going on since 2008: first the buttons on the left, then more and more stupid photo managers and IM clients, then this...

What especially pisses me off is that I have already switched Linux once, from RedHat/Fedora to Ubuntu, and it's quite hell, so I DON'T want to do it again.

  • Unity is the worse user interface I have ever used in 25 years of being in software industry. Avoid it !

  • @waroftheworldseu some of us love it and some of us dont. :] i actually like it.

  • @Xaahu I hear you. Perhaps I should mention that I installed 11.04 and upgraded to 11.10 and after trying to remove it the entire system broke and wouldn't reboot past the ubuntu spinner.

But you're point is very valid. some of us love it and some of us don't... so why do Ubuntu force it upon those who don't?

  • @waroftheworldseu ask ubuntu. i don really give a crap about it :\

  • Unity = terrible desktop user interface.

  • @hadlock kde do it go

  • Existing users have largely reached a consensus that Unity is just plain *wrong* for a desktop/laptop with a keyboard and an upright screen. And yet Mark S is openly hostile to critics of his pet project. Linux users are bailing out in large numbers and switching to Xfce or anything else that looks like an actual computer desktop instead of an overgrown smartphone.

Ubuntu has jumped the shark. Without the good desktop what's the point in using Ubuntu in the first place?

  • @artcancro Exactly. I've tried unity and I don't like it. and instead of install a different WM, I've "jumped ship" and now use openSuse most of the time, as I've used it before and quite like it.

  • why am i supposed to use an interface that seems designed to be use with touchscreen if i DONT have touchscreen? im switching to mint.

    Bye ubuntu!

  • LOLOLOLOLOL UUUUUunity sucxxxxssdsdszzzzzz LOLOLOLOLLOLOLOLOOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @dondopa I have to agree with you. the OS has grown bigger than some older hardware can handle. I was using an old HP A404x with a Celeron processor and Intel graphics on ubuntu up to version 8.10. That's when the support for that graphics chipset disappeared so I get it. I've switched to Mint 11 now and don't really see myself switching back anytime soon.

  • soooooooo this is best Os for porns? :D:D:D:D:D

  • Slackware4Life!

  • @araxen Slackware is mind boggling for new users. Otherwise yes, it's pretty good.

  • i once had a dream........and than it became reality!

  • i already use Docky...don't need or want the new dock. I already put my menu buttons back on the right. Dont need someone else telling my how to categorize my applications either. Definitely sticking with the Classic desktop as long as possible!

  • @SirTravers . Linux Mint still has Gnome 2. Canonical has lost or forgotten those who have old machines with old graphics cards. why didnt they give people the option to turn off compiz? not everyone wants Flashy 'MAC OS ' looking desktop Environments. what about those who want a simple-looking low Desktop Environment to work in?

  • Everyone is trying to switch back to gnome while I don't know how to switch to unity lol. I have 11.04 but I can't find a way to use it. Can anyone help me?

  • @NoiDontWantFries Your graphics driver probably doesn't support it, although in 11.10 a Unity 2d version will be on there which should be alot like 3d unity without the animations and things like that

  • unity is good. I cant understand why everyone complains.

  • This. UI. Is. HORRIBLE. It belongs on a PHONE. Couldn't find anything. F this, I'm using the classic UI on my netbook. It's great. It doesn't have to look as different (blindly) from Windows as possible to be awesome. Stop trying to reinvent the bike. Unity doesn't work.

  • @Fr34k1ng0ut Have you seen what Windows 8 is going to look like?

Search: building windows 8 video #1

  • @xKatjaxPurrsx OH GOD now I'll have nightmares, thanks mate >(

  • @Fr34k1ng0ut LOL, you're welcome ;-) Some of the changes i've seen coming make me think anti-windows activists are working from the inside. I'm hoping it will be completely unusable, but at the same time i'm feeling for my GF who will have to explain how to REALLY restart a windows 8 machine to one of her clients.

(Hint: the shutdown/restart options only write a hibernation file to reboot off)

  • i didn't suceed to recall an open program window with my mouse. i tried ...

Unity is non sens. back to vanilla GNOME3

  • it needs some polishing, but its good that you can change back :)

  • It seems strange that Ubuntu's more intuitive and creative features don't get forced upon the UI. Isn't the Unity design kind of a no-brainer?

  • i dont like this version :/

  • Not blacklisted suck omg i want it >.<

  • It makes excellent use of screen space... Give it some time and it gets fairly simple to use and understand. I've got nothing against it. Ubuntu Classic aka Gnome just feels "expired", it's a system we're all so familiar with since the release of early Apple and Windows, change can be refreshing...

  • This looks better than Windows 8 interface.

  • when i installed it, gnome showed up and i got a error saying i didnt have sufficient or good enough hardware or something, hep plz?

  • @Tu51ndBl4d3 install gfx driver

  • awesome as fuck

  • I'm using unity and have no trouble with it. It's very stable, productive and I can do everything with it. Took some time to get used to it (coming from kde and gnome 2 background).

I would like the option to launch NEW instances from the launch bar, not just bring the active one to view. I hate to go to the one open terminal in order to have new terminals. Maybe ctrl-click or in the left-click menu?

  • how do i get it?? im new to unbuntu.

  • @winmac2565 just go to ubuntu.com and download the ISO image. you need a program in windows to burn this iso image to a cd. I use XPBURN or Image Burn it is free cd burning programs. A ISO file is like a zip file, but it is just a copy of a Live CD of Linux. simple to do. If i was you start off with Ubuntu 10.10 and download that ISO file.

  • Ubuntu Natty is just a mess: you can't use Unity and nautilus in the same system, it looks like there's no harmony between them.

In order to be something truly new, Unity has to become SOMETHING NEW, not just a new interface that overlaps Gnome.

Maybe Gnome 2.x or XFCE may not be the most innovative DM around, but they're actually strong and stable in doing what they do.

  • I still prefer fedora 15 with GNOME 3.

  • Ubuntu 11.04 sucks, hate the fact that mine wireless card works in 10.10. but after doing the a clean install of 11.04 in my laptop WI-FI does not work any more. As the interface it made like a dame cell phone interface so when you try to use system tools for really need to look for them. i Don't see anyone using unity for a web server any time soon. I hope the driver issues are fix in time for 11.10

  • @richken7 have you tried the additional drivers app?

  • @richken7 ever tried the proprietary drivers?

  • @richken7 Why would you use a desktop for a web server at all?

  • @Nikolaj64 I do the opposite, technically. My PC is in a server case.

Also, a desktop makes a simple machine for basic server duties, running Linux you free up a lot of system resources and provide a network with something that can function much the same as a server. Throw an inexpensive RAID card at it and you're set... For some people, working with old computers is a great alternative to cost, the disposal of a high powered machine is balanced with the low resource use of Linux. Simple.

  • It took some time but I've come to like Unity and cannot wait to see how it is improved in the future.

  • Personally I love Unity and I have been a fan of Gnome for years. It's simple and I like the setup. YMMV but it only takes two clicks to change back to Gnome. I look forward to see how this evolves.

Xmonad is still my personal choice though ;)

  • well from the comments i've read, I'm not too excited about trying unity, but the good news is that it's for my mom (; 10.04 is my baby.

  • I like unity

  • ILL START COMPLAINING THE DAY IS NOT FREE ANYMORE !!

FOR NOW I AM HAPPY !!

  • @conejoxxx it will be free always :D you

    dont have to worry :D

  • @conejoxxx unity wont work on my pc very well. i understand the need to move forward but shouldn't they be focusing on functionality and not just pretty flashy appearance. The sidebar and the menu icons are too big and cannot be modified Ubuntu 11.04 is starting to become Mac OS X. i have a old Nvidia graphics card and the fucking thing crashes when i try to get the recommended drivers for it. i prefer the old Gnome 2. i am forced to consider switching to Linux Mint. can compiz be turned off?

  • @dondopa Yeaaah !! But . Like i said ILL START COMPLAINING THE DAY IS NOT FREE ANYMORE !!

  • @conejoxxx They are aiming at guys like you: no brain, let others make the decisions

  • @LMB222 Don't cry, just enjoy it going in !!

  • @conejoxxx I'm switching to LinuxMint. Will require a reinstall instead of an update, but well... I'm not going to this user-unfriendly, time-wasting crap Ubuntu served us.

  • I'm sticking with my 10.10. Also fuck you Ubuntu at least introduce a new default wallpaper or something. It's been the same thing for like three releases.

  • Really nice video, thank's! ;)

  • gnome 3

  • Cracks me up, Win is trying to imitate Lin so much lol.

  • lol, Ubuntu is good if you want to run a server, but the GUI looks like it's from 1995.

  • Comment removed

  • it sux

  • gotta looove unity! most innovative, easy to understand, and efficient interface in a long time! :)

  • hi im new to ubuntu, and i have a problem :) i've installed firefox plugin from adobe and i still can't watch any vids :/ anyone help me??

  • @ImQrazy I just installed this to test it out myself, and Ive never used Linux or Ubuntu before. All I had to do was install the plugin and everything worked.

  • @AmsterdamHeavy yea i fixed it now aswell :3 i just didn't use firefox and got chromium.. works now :D

  • @ImQrazy restart the os and open firefox again; see then;

  • ATENÇÃO:

FOI DESCOBERTO QUE OS CRIADORES E DEFENSORES DO UNITY SÃO NA VERDADE ESPIÕES DA MICROSOFT QUE QUEREM ACABAR COM O LINUX. POR TUDO DE MAIS SAGRADO, NÃO INSTALEM O UNITY, ELE VAI ACABAR COM SEU PC E TE MATAR DE RAIVA!

  • are you related to Murray? Baaahahaah !!

  • I CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO ENABLE DASH PLZ!!! HELP SOMEONE :(

  • DAVE MATHEWS BAND <3

  • Musicplayer is intgrated, that's cool. but where's about a chatsystem?

  • hey my sound driver is not working in ubuntu

  • Ubuntu is looking more and more like mac these days.

  • Unity sucks. Why they changed it? What was wrong with Gnome? It was easy to use, simple, good looking, customizable and it worked well. I know I am able to use gnome, but I don't know what they did to it, but it's very laggy now.

  • I used to think unity sucked, but as I got used to it, I began to like it. It isn't as bad as many people make it out to be. It does take a bit more power to run, though. Hopefully, it will be improved even more.

  • Paid, proprietary software?! Ubuntu used to be strictly open source! NOW I'M REALLY MAD!

  • I hate it! Seriously, I want to cry. I feel so let down.

I've been a fan of Ubuntu for years. It was the reason I loved my laptop. I hated Vista, so I would always boot with Ubuntu. The updates always impressed me. But this... just why? Unity looks like my phone and Gnome 3 looks like a freaking iPad! Time to switch to Fedora, I guess.

  • Unity sucks!

    Gnome3 sucks!

    Ubuntu's starting to suck!

    Just my 2 cents...

  • @tsdf2 Try Mint!

  • @SickTechShow

I already tried Mint and it was ok. It didn't really convince me though.

  • No thanks, Ubuntu - that's pretty disappointing. If I wanted my computer to look like a child's toy I'd have bought a Mac. Time to check out Mint, Fedora, etc.

  • I actually prefer this then Gnome. It seems snappier and somewhat looks more like a mac. With the dock. Ease of performance is a downfall though. Took me a week to learn what I could in 10,10

  • @DARTHZANRUIT It took you a weak to learn how to use 10.10? Have you started using Ubuntu late? I've been using it since I was 11~ (Ubuntu 5.10) and it was pretty simple back then without switching to the gay Mac/Pad-like Desktop. (aside from all the bug issues lol).

  • @kyedaman Lol, what can i say i used Windows for 14 years :P

  • Firefox 5.0!

  • I don't wanna say i hate Unity, but i do. The only good thing about Unity is that it made me uninstall Ubuntu and let me install Fedora. It was the best decision in my life!

  • 10.04 and 10.10 worked really good for me. When I upgraded to 11.04 bugs and graphical errors appeared to me :(. I love playing Minecraft but with Ubuntu 11.04 it's impossible with all these black screens :(. PLEASE fix this or make easier downgrading because my computer is pretty useless right now :(

  • Even, I, world's biggest fan of Ubuntu, I have to say, Unity is pretty much rubbish, at least at this stage. It feels like an early Alpha version.

  • WTF Ubuntu ^^

  • you can always switch to ubuntu classic desktop from the login screen , so unity is just a bonus feature

  • This reminds me of mac with the launcher bar reminding me of the dock and themenus at the top reminding me of the menus on a Mac, which I hate most about man anyways.

Y is everybody trying to copy macs?!

    Their not so great anyways...

Ps: I'm not a man nor windows nor ubuntu hater. I like them all.

  • Thanks "Unity", you make me change to Mint!

I try to adapt but is impossible! "Unity" simple sucks = "Natty" sucks to!

All that new interface sucks, exemple: That menu bar think don´t work with Gimp!

It has to be optional, customizable!

Not force user to accept it!

    Try "Liberty"!!!

  • All the complaining is quite surprising. By the looks of it, it seems like an improvement. I think all of you people are just too used to the old environment and make the same mistake IE users do.

  • Unity sucks. What happened here is ubuntu came out with unity in the middle of 10.10 for netbooks, and were so proud of themselfs for making a good desktop enviorment, they overused it so much in 11.11 is gonna suck no gnome!

  • I fucking hate unity. The task bar thing is alright, but finding programs by typing the name of them sucks. If they can somehow merge the menu structure with this new system I think it would be great. I don't want to see recommendations for a program EVERY TIME I OPEN MY APP MENU, That is so intrusive you really fucked up hard on this.

  • Ubuntu Unity & Gnome Shell = hello KDE :)

  • Also, Unity is one of those things that will grow on you. People were angry when Google kept changing the youtube page layout, but now you don't even recognize it anymore.

  • Guys, if you don't like it you can switch to the classic desktop on login. Click on your user name and under the part on the bottom dash and change "Ubuntu" to "Ubuntu desktop". Canonical isn't stupid, they planned ahead.

  • @Chintendoeddman

Ubuntu is getting indeed ubuntu, and thats the problem they grow above their self which is a shame..

The power of linux is the customizability and it is in my way taken away a bit with unity.. Ofcourse its still a young project.. but my first impression was .. laggy unstable... buggy.. and un customizable...

I tried the gnome classic and even that I dont know what they did with it was buggy as hell

  • @Chintendoeddman They're not planning ahead for newer releases of Ubuntu. After 11.04, no more GNOME Desktop.

  • @Chintendoeddman I have a problem because when I put the classic theme of ubuntu I leave the top buttons, close, minimize etc.

I hope you can help me

    regards

  • @saul97749 I had the same problem, so I switched to "Classic Desktop (without effects)". DO NOT ENABLE COMPIZ! It doesn't work in 11.04 for some reason. I downgraded to 10.10 anyways.

  • @Chintendoeddman thank you very much

  • @Chintendoeddman Canonical is removing classic desktop as of 11.10 says mark shuttleworth .

Even the number of Ubuntu users are quickly dropping, and moving to Linux Mint . Unity is buggy , and GNOME3 works way better. After using 11.04 I had to switch back to 10.10 because Unity kept crashing my art software . They plan on removing synaptic from Ubuntu in 11.10 as well.

  • @maw88ify Ubuntu 11.10 might actually get Gnome Three (I hope so). You could always install that through synaptic (which you can still get in it). Unity is buggy because it is new. It isn't even a year old. Most desktop environments take YEARS to make (KDE, Gnome, XFCE, etc.). There is still the supported Ubuntu side projects like Xubuntu and Kubuntu. Linux Mint is just Ubuntu with Gnome that looks like windows. Unity should be FAR better in the next release. It is certainly better than in 10.10

  • @Chintendoeddman "It is certainly better than in 10.10" This is not true for me. Look at my video called "ubuntu unity sucks to be you". In 10.10 everything I used worked, but in 11.04 everything crashed even in classic mode . So what ever they did to Ubuntu made it not work correctly on my computer, and that is a fact . Unity 11.04 is as bad as Windows Vista , or Window Me , but in the Linux world. Many of the Ubuntu community even told Canonical that they didn't like Unity.

  • @maw88ify Let's just hope We get Gnome 3 in 11.10

  • @Chintendoeddman They are getting rid of that option in 11.10, what was that you were saying about them "Thinking ahead"?

  • @JoelB3783 Again, Unity is still in development. Gnome, KDE, and XFCE weren't developed over night. And 11.10 is getting Gnome 3 as well I believe.

  • @Chintendoeddman

The first Gnome release was pretty good. Ubuntu's just making changes for the sake of change I think. Unity is alright to use but social media and the cloud is just retarded.

  • ITS CRAP! Unity is just a big pile of sh*t forced on us by Ubuntu. I loved Ubuntu with Gnome 2 not a fan of Gnome3 and KDE is just bugy and slow. Never thought the day would come when I sent money to Bill Gates but windows 7 is rocking and wow Netflix, itunes and yes, yes, yes STEAM all work awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • if u don't like unity, u can choose gnome! so what do u have against natty?

  • haha, you can learn more at OMGubuntu.co.uk .. certainly!

  • it looks very little responsive :(

  • @eirikmurito

it look like small piece of big shit

first fall kde, now ubuntu ..at least xfce still same

  • @Jafar4eg

KDE is a desktop environment, and so is gnome, they are both never mend to be light on resources, xfce lxde are both designed to run on lower spec hardware therefore less resource hungry.

BTW if you like KDE try pclinuxos

  • @MrDemilord

there is problem not in light resources, there is problem in code size, and errors in it.

..but, i'm think they need to keep it simple as possible (slackware!?)

  • @Jafar4eg

Simple but customizable, so to say put hooks in , so I can customize the top panel, and make a desktop a desktop again to put icons on it or programs... Oh what if I want to move the panel to the bottom instead of the top.. or remove the side panel... I could with gnome 2.. .. Not every person wants it that way... Like I love to have the menuś in the program instead of the top panel..

Don't make it the mac way... To make you work the way they want you to..

  • @eirikmurito

it look like small piece of big shit, many features stolen from MAC (dash->?dashboard ..)

  • Actually, I like it, We just need to get used to It, People generally don't like change, But i don't think change is a bad thing

  • Unity environment is very good in comparision with Windows 8 interface.

  • Are you a kiwi?

  • Windows ftw!

  • Can somebody help me? How do I change the monitor the dash is on

    ?

  • Ubuntu 11.04 is perfect for tablet.

  • at first..i HATED Unity...it made me want to hate ubuntu too..and almost...but other things other than the desktop alone will still keep me on ubuntu for a while...

    ...

but after playing a while with it...i can't lie anymore...Keepin in mind that were moving into a time when keyboards and mouses are considered extra weight..I LOVE it......unity needs to work a lot on their code.....and now that they will get more attention from developers..thanks to the ubuntu choice...

  • minor point, pronunciation is: oo-boon-too

  • Just installed Ubuntu 11.04 for CUDA development but only discovered this messed up terrible interface after installing. It's like they're trying to make it have an iPad like interface and are failing miserably. It took me ages just to find where to change my screen resolution. Deleting the partition now and will install Scientific Linux instead of this hunk of junk.

  • @Spanky2k you could have just activated the classic gnome gui that's included.

  • @KeverBowser Discovered later that you can indeed boot classic gnome if you select it from the login screen but because I specified during install that I wanted automatic logon, I never got the choice. It doesn't matter now though, if Unity is the direction Ubuntu's going then I'd rather pass and use a distro with a usable, full featured GUI installed as default instead.

  • @Spanky2k you can change the default session in the login screen menu under system settings right in unity. But I know what you mean, I don't like unity either and if Ubuntu sticks with it and it doesn't get improved drastically I'll switch to another distro, too.

  • @KeverBowser It took me ages just to find the system settings just to change resolution so that turned me off to it right away. I'm not happy with the idea of running a GUI that was designed for a 1024x600 resolution on a system with a 5760x1600 triple display resolution!!

  • @Spanky2k Like I said I don't like unity, too. Thank god there are alternatives you can use.

  • @Spanky2k How can it take ages, when all you have to do is search for monitor, resolution or settings - they all work.

  • Comment removed

  • Why does everyone says tha Unity sucks? Im a Linux user for several years.....and i believe its something not only usefull but also easy to use for begginers who now start their journey at Ubuntu .......

  • @rem000 Indeed. unity offered enough familiarity to windows 7 for my technophobic mom to switch operating systems.
