Its called ferrofluids. Clearly, they behave incredibly in the presence of powerful magnets. Basically it is just some sort of organic solvent or water in which ferromagnetic particles, most commonly iron, but also others including chromium oxide, nickle, and cobalt, are dissolved. Once this has occured, the liquid, or ferrofluid becomes extemely polarized in the presence of magnets- which explains the substances interesting behaviors. Truly fascinating.
