potholer54 is the man. plain and simple. i sent bill maher a letter telling him to get you on Real Time so whenever stupid people go on their pretending to know about global warming they can call on you as a real time reporter to tell them what is really up.
tskasa1 addresses a major concern I have with current science research, it's hard to educate someone by directing them to a paper that they cannot read until they drop like $30. It's not that the science doesn't need to be paid for, it's that we should find other ways to pay for it than through this. Until a lot more people take it seriously that's going to be hard to do though...
Science doesn't have the threat of eternal damnation necessary to motivate individuals into spreading the word. Take a look at TheScienceNetwork Org. They have only a few of their site's videos available on DVD at a relatively high price. None of the videos are available for download. Yet the cost to stream a video is no greater than the cost to allow the same video to be downloaded. And a downloaded video stands a much better chance of being viewed more times. Where's the instinctive altruism?
@PurushaDesa, Google-YouTube sometimes forces visitors to use specific browsers by making the page incompatible with certain browsers. The box is probably opened with javascript. Opera 10.63 build 3516 (using default settings), running under XP, opens the Description Box just fine. So does IE 7.0.5730.13. And so does SeaMonkey 2.0.8. I recommend you download K-Meleon 1.5.4 as an additional browser. See K-Meleon, under tools, privacy, has the option to turn off flash, which is necessary sometimes
Thank you very much for the alternate browser suggestions, Unseen Strings. I'm on Safari, and for whatever reason, the problem seems to have been rectified after repairing permissions on OS X, which often irons out a lot of problems with Flash (not sure if that has any affect on Javascript dialogue boxes though), but there's always a chance it was a just a temporary YT glitch. Cheers anyway.
I'm glad to hear you were able to iron out your problem. Both Linux and Windows have permissions which must be set. But they call the permissions regarding Web pages, "Internet options," or "preferences." And they are set within the browser. A Web Site doesn't know what OS is being used to view the page, or that is, it can be fooled. The page is generally written according to a particular standard which browsers understand. The "flash" is generally activated by a javascript. Safari uses java too
potholer, one thing you could do as well is take the sources and attributions for your videos and post them in a blog article through a free provider such as Wordpress or Blogger, and provide a link to the blog article in your video description. This way you have plenty of room to list all your sources and attributions, and you can provide the script of the video with footnoted references as well if you're so inclined.
Wow! Taking the extra time to cite your sources even though someone like you has the least problems with credibility of all the personalities on YouTube. Now if only the NephilimFrees of this realm would follow your good example. I salute you, sir.
That you went through the effort to make a new video just to use the description space for sources made me grin.
I can't help but think you might have been better served just dumping them into a string of comments since youtube sorts uploader comments to the top anyway, but whatever works!
I'm sorry, and I know this probably sounds as an insipid question, but how can I gain access to these scientific papers? Or do I have to buy each one?
@tskasa1 -- "how can I gain access to these scientific papers?" -- Usually you do have to subscribe or at least pay for individual papers, but more and more papers seem to be making their way online. If you don't want to pay, try searching Google Scholar.
Might someone consider going to a library? A quaint old place, but the larger ones often have these articles in an innovative new unbreakable container that requires no power to use it and works with ambient light. This format is called "print" and I've heard it works well.
@potholer54 Rather then not wanting to, I can't afford. Free access to scientific papers would be much appreciated and probably do the world a lot of good (as long as it's clear you're only reading peer reviewed scientific work rather then faith. You know, in case the clear contradictions in the text aren't so obvious :P)
@potholer54 it is rather frustrating as a secondary student trying to do some individual research beyond your curriculum and you come across what appears to be a fascinating paper and you can't acces it due to circumstance. your videos are great when are more coming out?
@tskasa1 If you live near a university, they often have libraries you can access with subscriptions to many journals. I live in a college town with a research university and several smaller technical colleges and a very large community college. The community college within walking distance of me has a great journal database. Technically the computers are for the students there I would suppose, but I haven't been a student there since high school and they let me use the computers for research.
Searching for the name of the paper + .pdf tends to give fruitful results even if Google Scholar won't show any. Do note that this could, in some cases, be copyright infringement.
@tskasa1 You can often find the abstracts of the papers on line - most journals put the abstracts on line in the hope of soemone buying them or suscribing to the journal.
However if you go to the author's site or bibliography (or those for a coauthor) they will often freely post the papers or precises of them even though the journal frowns on this. If they have not posted it, you can email the author and they will generally send you a reprint.
@tskasa1 As a college student, I get free access to scientific papers. You might ask a college student you know to download any papers you want to read. That way, it's free!!!
For long video descriptions I created myself a blog and link to the long descriptions in the video description box. For instance, unseenstrings wordpress com/2010/10/09/daniel-dennett-and-booger-eating/. You may find this method more effective than having to create a second video with the remainder of a video description. In fact, at first I waited for the remainder of the description to be displayed in the video. When it didn't, I investigated and found it in the description of the second video
Place an Annotation link on this video to the video you are talking about, and like wise on that video to his video. This will make them easy to find.
Maybe you should get your own blog, just for sources :P Or perhaps use services as pastebin or alike. Or you could embed the sources in the video, as for instance extantd0d0 do, with link sources at the end.
