You should try them just deep fried and sprinkle a little salt on them. You can eat them just like that or with a dipping sauce made of fish sauce mixed with sugar and msg. Its really good.
I breed waxworms, usually for my leopard gecko. When I saw this though, I now have a meal once and a while to add into a sandwich or pasta. Tastes delicious!
My science teacher showed this in class today! His AP Biology class made wax worm tacos inspired by this video and he let our class taste some worms. Delicious.
Seeing the worms moving in the bowl, I wanted to vomit. When I saw her nice taccos and her smile while eating, I was dead hungry. I think I cant eat insects if they are hidden in some ways ^^
Daniella has the best "mmm" face after she takes a bite of something. Super genuine and makes you believe that it's the best thing you've seen cooked in years.
I am really going to try this out as a way of saving some necessary money. I do believe insects are underestimated in their nutritional values and perhaps maybe for their looks.. I have always thought there is something very gross and disgusting about eating insects, but after frying them or boiling, so they don't move anymore, we can talk about eating them. I am very curious how they taste. Apparently well..
Just as a tip for you guys, I'd suggest cooking the waxworms with either olive oil(like she does in the video) or butter. I'd advise you NOT to use grapeseed oil! I tried that to cook waxworms a week ago and it gave them a weird taste/smell. Butter and olive oil worked perfectly fine for some reason.
A little bit of butter + onions + waxworms = pure win! I can't wait to try this taco recipe at some point.
Good for you. You have no fear. I'm the complete opposite than you. I would rather have a slow and painful death than be forced to eat bugs! No matter what they sauteed with!
I wouldn't try you're deep fried scorpion recipe, just because I'm not a very big fan of exoskeletons, but I'd cook this one in a heartbeat! Looks so good! People need to get over their fears and realize some bugs are absolutely to die for!
And no, I don't mean they'll die.... but they might find themselves in heaven.
@UltimateBokanator Oops, then you probably shouldn't read this FDA document detailing the amount of insect matter permitted in processed foods. You definitely shouldn't scroll down to see that 60 or more insect fragments per 100 grams of chocolate is considered "average"... and them's factory bugs! Mine, at least, are generally organic. :) fda.gov/food/guidancecomplianceregulatoryinformation/guidancedocuments/sanitation/ucm056174.htm
is it just me or is this disgusting? lol, im chinese and i know the chinese eat bugs and stuff in different parts of china but it really just disturbs me
Why don't you make more? This has so much potential! I got inspired and have tried this one and crickets fried with a caramel marinade. Going to Thailand this summer for some more ideas :)
one of these days, this woman will sit down on the toilet and pull out a 3 foot tape worm from her rear end. If it hasn't happened yet, it will. Give it time. I've farmed all my life and even when fowl like chickens and turkeys eat crickets, they tend to get sick and die. Crickets carry all sorts of parasites that are also found on grasshoppers and cockroaches. Seeing you gnaw into those worms made me gag. Your parents should have given you more attention when you were young.
@jamesterry1977 -- you raise a good point: I never recommend eating insects raw, only cooked. This takes care of the potential of parasites, just as it does with the rest of the meat we eat. I would certainly not advise doing something unless I'd carefully studied it. My degree is in Medical Anthropology, with a focus on ethno-nutrition; I've been studying this subject for over ten years. Ha, tell your chickens that crickets taste better sauteed, anyway. :)
@GirlMeetsBug well, I guess I was a little harsh on you. Sorry about that... I regretted that post as soon as I made it. I guess it's just startling to see a VERY attractive girl munching on stuff that would make a buzzard gag. Well, thanks for being a pioneer, I guess. And, just ignore my rude comment... it was made out of a sense of shock, to be honest. I guess we, as Americans, eat stuff that would curl the stomachs of people in other countries. Who knows, maybe it will grow on me!
@runescapenbp47 -- absolutely not. In fact, even after meals where I ate 10 different kinds of insects, I experienced zero gastrointestinal problems. I think the human body, like those of our primate ancestors, was made to eat bugs!
However, I strongly advocate cooking insects vs consuming them raw like they do on Fear Factor, etc. Just as with any other form of meat, especially if you don't know where it's from or how it was raised, parasites can be a possibility -- cooking is best!
Great video. I'll have to show it to my summer campers. We dry roast crickets and dip them in chocolate before eating them. The kids think it is great. I promoted you video on my site. twincitiesnaturalist. com Keep up the insect eating!
@twincitiesnaturalist -- Thanks! You have GOT to try my new waxworm recipe, it's even better than dry-roasted crickets. It's the same process, you dry-roast the waxworms just like the crickets, then you toss them with a little sugar and salt (and maybe wasabi powder) and they are like crunchy, tasty party snacks. The kids will love 'em!
