I heard on NPR today that the troops wont be arriving in Afghanistan until late summer or fall of 2010...no way they're withdrawing less than a year later in 2011...the deadline is a lie, its a movable marker. How do 30000 extra troops in Afghanistan help with Pakistan? Because Pakistan is being destabilized by the Taliban, who are operating out of Afghanistan. As long as Pakistan remains unstable, their ability to eliminate A-Q cells from their territory remains fragile. Thus we help Pakistan eliminate the Al Quaeda in Pakistan by fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan.

At least, that's what I think the strategy is here.
