I think this is from the first episode, the pilot. I t was filmed in 1997 while the second episode was filmed a year later. If you look at the second episode, Tony is slightly heavier and slightly balder. This looks like it is from the pilot episode.

@presidentbren He didn't like Rudy because Rudy always went after the mob guys when he was attorney general or a prosecutor. Tony's voice is more like Gandolfini's voice than at any time in the series. This was in the first season for sure.

Maybe when you're used to watching the last one followed directly by the first one, that could happen (more for Meadow, though espescially since she was still a child in the beginning, but Melfi's voice I always thought seemed to get progressivally gravelier as time progressed)
