I recently bought a 12 string Ibanez, and I just love it. I´ve been playing the guitar for little over two years. After about a day I got used to putting more pressure on the strings. I haven´t noticed that it goes out of tune though, but that may change as the strings and the guitar gets played more. Anyways, thanks for a good video.
Very Helpful - I have a 1967 Martin D-12-20....Can't decide whether to sell it or learn to play it better. Hard to keep the fingers in shape to play unless I play constantly.
@MrRedwoodvalley some of them but they arn't real good best to get a good one.... I paid $50 bucks for one but it will last for ever and by tuning down the guitar should last me quit some time...... you would be surprised how fast a 12 string will warp it's neck when kept permanetly in standard tuning..... plus I find I only tune my every week or so and I play it twice a day for a half hour usually!
You can tune that Takamine up to standard tuning with light gauge strings and it will be fine. It's well constructed and strings have come a long way since the late 60's and early 70's. Just be mindful of the humidity. Too high or too low of humidity for too long is a killer to any acoustic, but 12 strings are more sensitive.
Excellent tutorial....I used to be scared of the task of learning the 12 string but after listening to a couple of leadbelly songs and watching this vid I think I'll try my hand at it sooner than later. Thanks.
This is a great video! I am a newbee...first, what type of pics are you using for your fingerpicking? Are they all thumb picks? Secondly--what do you mean by "downtuning"?
Thank you so much...this is the first video I saw and I signed up for your newsletter right away! You are very talented! Thank you in advance!
hello godhat3, your instructions are absolutely beautyful. I'm now 52 and have had some guitar lessons about 35 years ago. You've made me learn again with a lot of passion and I bought a 12string Takamine on my birthday this year. And I try also to do fingerpicking on the Takamine. Seems it works....slowly, but all the things come again. Please keep on with your good lessons. I love it. God bless you. Greetings from Dusseldorf, Germany.
Many years back, we tuned a standard 12 just like you're saying BUT...one major difference...we tuned down third. When Denver came along, he used the Guild 12 which was personally built for him by Guild and he tuned in key. The Guild lasted using that tuning but other guitars wore out fast! Too much stress. I'm happy to see someone cover this tiny little detail!
@goldhat3 hey im thinking of getting a 12 string acoustic later on down the road but i was wondering about the tuning i know the tuning an octave higher but i heard that this tuning causes alot of tension on the instrument and creates bulges and can ruin the instrument, is that true?
@guitarfreak651 as he said in this video, many keep it tuned down at least 1/2 step. 1/2 step tuning down will take 1200lbs of pressure off of the strings.
@guitarfreak651 as he said in this video, many keep it tuned down at least 1/2 step. 1/2 step tuning down will take 1200lbs of pressure off of the strings. I have been playing a 12 string for about 20 years. I have a white Ovation with Gold frets and keys (that's my baby) and a Rogue. Love them both. I still have a 6 string, because some songs just don't sound right on a 12.
I guessed the opening song-instantly!! I need to check out your fingerpickin vid you mentioned cos I'm in danger of getting stuck always doing the same pattern!
How much did the guitar in the background that is like George Harrison's guitar cost?

I learned my first barre chords on a 12 string.
Best way I could have learned them.

He looks like Spanky McFarland from the little rascals as an adult.
Check it out: Google images Spanky McFarland as an adult. I tried posting the link but it was too long and showed as an error, sowie.
