@LutzDerLurch Right- matchlocks were replaced by flintlocks in the last quarter of the 17th century.
And the last matchlocks had shoulder stocks of the "fish-belly" ( curved underneath) shape and not the "fishtail" shape of the early 17th century. The lockplates were bigger and the pan was bolted to the lock, not soldered to the barrel. Those late matchlocks were mostly converted to flintlock because it only needed a new lock.
The Uniforms looks a bit too late for a matchlock, I dare say.

Still, I think it's even cooler that he's being instructed in drill by a colonial Zululand soldier!
