One of my closest friends joined the military last year. I hope with all of my being that he never has to experience war. There's a good chance he'll be deployed soon but I'm going to stay positive. If this world had no troops or police, we'd all be a nation of victims and nothing to stop the evil. Sometimes innocents get caught in the crossfire. Sometimes the "good guys" turn bad. That's war. This is the cross that vets carry. Neither you or Rise Against will ever know what it's like to carry that burden. Someone must fight though... unless we become a world of victims.

Sounds like a POW (maybe a high-profile target or maybe not) and he was telling of his squadmates' violation and disrespect of that person. Originally the soldier refused to dehumanize the man like that (and to an extent, dehumanize himself) and protested, but he ended up doing it, too, joining the others.
It was really his conversion from that supposed noble patriot to a hateful, even evil antagonistic figure.

So it is simple...."choose a side and make a stand" but remember you will have to be prepared to back up your stand/stance. PTSD....in my view it is a crutch....our Fathers by and large sucked it up and didn't talk about their experiences....but at least they had the support of the free world in WW2 and people were grateful for what they did. Our soldiers today don't get enough recognition for the sacrifice they make....when they could be making 10 times the money in business.
A few comments: In the first place if you have never picked up a rifle and been on the sharp edge of conflict...you cannot begin to understand it. Every Veteran I know is a pacifist and as is suggested in the song "Universal soldier" by Donovan and Lennon..."if all soldiers stopped fighting it would be the end to war"....but from personal experience....who will stop first? and who will co-ordinate the joint stopping? It is better to fight remote from your home than where your home is.
In my opinion, not saying that it's correct, this song isn't saying that soldiers are horrible, though it is also not saying they're as amazing as we make them. It's saying that the credit the military get isn't for what they should be getting it for. It's saying that we tell the military they are so amazing for hurting people that are innocent. It's saying that war is horrible and we respect our soldiers for the wrong reasons. But NOT that what they do is a bad thing. It never once says that.

This song isn't primarily about the morality of war or of killing, it's of the misconception that some of the people who go into the military have, thinking it will be grand and glorious and "just like the movies" or even those who only go for patriotic reasons. But when you find out the truth of what war is really like it's too late or too hard to turn back so it's easier to go ahead and follow orders, and after it's over all you have is the tainted ideal you fought for.
I've never been one to really think too much about war and soldiers, but this song gets to me...

One of my closest friends joined the military last year. I hope with all of my being that he never has to experience war. There's a good chance he'll be deployed soon but I'm going to stay positive. "war is necessary" ok, sure, but not in its current state, go back to the good old days when they went to a huge open area with all their soldiers and fought it out, destroying entire cities and villages is not necessary.

I'm a vet. Iraq and GWOT. War is ugly. It's not cool like on MW3. This song almost comes off as a backhanded troop diss. If this world had no troops or police, we'd all be a nation of victims and nothing to stop the evil. Sometimes innocents get caught in the crossfire. Sometimes the "good guys" turn bad. That's war. This is the cross that vets carry. Neither you or Rise Against will ever know what it's like to carry that burden. Someone must fight though... unless we become a world of victims.

Sounds like a POW (maybe a high-profile target or maybe not) and he was telling of his squadmates' violation and disrespect of that person. Originally the soldier refused to dehumanize the man like that (and to an extent, dehumanize himself) and protested, but he ended up doing it, too, joining the others.
It was really his conversion from that supposed noble patriot to a hateful, even evil antagonistic figure.

@MrMonkeyMan266 i'd say its not about being american at all i love this song and on the surface i would say it is patriotic but i would say it is more about how a man feels mislead by his country so he can't trust the flag of where he is from rather the flag of the woman a flag of peace and thats what he trusts her flag. "I brought home that flag, now it gathers dust. But its a flag that i love its the only flag I trust." I think these lyrics really show that this is the case.

So it is simple...."choose a side and make a stand" but remember you will have to be prepared to back up your stand/stance. PTSD....in my view it is a crutch....our Fathers by and large sucked it up and didn't talk about their experiences....but at least they had the support of the free world in WW2 and people were grateful for what they did. Our soldiers today don't get enough recognition for the sacrifice they make....when they could be making 10 times the money in business.

A few comments: In the first place if you have never picked up a rifle and been on the sharp edge of conflict...you cannot begin to understand it. Every Veteran I know is a pacifist and as is suggested in the song "Universal soldier" by Donovan and Lennon..."if all soldiers stopped fighting it would be the end to war"....but from personal experience....who will stop first? and who will co-ordinate the joint stopping? It is better to fight remote from your home than where your home is.

In my opinion, not saying that it's correct, this song isn't saying that soldiers are horrible, though it is also not saying they're as amazing as we make them. It's saying that the credit the military get isn't for what they should be getting it for. It's saying that we tell the military they are so amazing for hurting people that are innocent. It's saying that war is horrible and we respect our soldiers for the wrong reasons. But NOT that what they do is a bad thing. It never once says that.

im suspended a person came in the school for a presentation the guy said he was a veteren then he said it was fun being in the military i never cussed so much times in one sentence and i was screaming insaults .... ppl in wars will tell u war isnt fun and easy its hard and painful

This song isn't primarily about the morality of war or of killing, it's of the misconception that some of the people who go into the military have, thinking it will be grand and glorious and "just like the movies" or even those who only go for patriotic reasons. But when you find out the truth of what war is really like it's too late or too hard to turn back so it's easier to go ahead and follow orders, and after it's over all you have is the tainted ideal you fought for.
