HAHAHAH.. Man these guys are full of it.. I'm even more shocked to see that they've put the fireblade in front of the R1. Cause they all for the yamaha. Only jap bike they really like. I wouldn't mind a lack of low-end power on a bike. In fact, if I were looking to get a street bike (I usually ride dirt) I'd be looking for a bike where the power comes on like a rattlesnake. First you poke it with a stick, then you wait in fear for a little while, and then you die. And, given that preference, I'd get an early-70s Kawasaki 750 two-stroke with expansion-chamber pipes. And, perhaps best of all, the sound it makes in the powerband can cause lightning strikes on a sunny day.

hey..where was the Aprilia in the review? The "standard" 1000cc 4banger family is now larger than just the Japanese mainstays +1 (BMW)..you gotta add the other..
Otherwise MCN, great review and explanation of your findings...keep it up
can't stand the ugliness of the S1000rr, I would buy that thing in a flash if weren't for the drunken BMW engineer when designing the headlights. All the other players are out of the game, zx10r all the way!!! owned 2009 gixxer 1000 and 2010 R1...I would pick the gixxer over the two any day.
Why on earth would you put a control tyre on the bikes, it should be done with whatever it comes from the factory with, this way you can see what is truly a street-bike, track-bike and which bike is balanced in between. If the tyre that comes standard is hindering performance, say that, but the manufacturers shouldn't get a free pass when it comes to which rubber they wear.
All the Traction COntrols and Mods fair enought they help riding but its becoming like Ferraris now you dont Ride the New Bikes anymore they Ride you. I think Id prefer to buy a 1990's GSX-R than a new one to be Honest. Yes it wont handle as good but it means your be a better Rider as you have to Ride it properly :)
With all the electronics at your finger tips, I can see new guys getting killed. Over all I am racing the 2011 zx10r truthfully there's not that much difference in previous year bikes. The zx10r is not for new guys starting off ride hard play hard.
wtf! BMW March eNewsletter linked the photo of Dystany Spurlock (followed by an article about how she raced Jeremy Teasley) to this unrelated video about the S1000RR. This pisses me off. I hold BMW to a higher standard than this.
@plaid4u According to a quick google search I found: London: 29" Chicago: 34" NYC: 47.2" LA: 14.9". Granted, I've never been to London so I can't comment first hand on how much it rains and that was the result of a 4 second google search, so you may still be right.
Neavesy was saying that GSXr comes last and how unfair that was as its an epic bike. They are all epic !! They are all the worlds best 1000cc bikes and theres not really a hair between them all. Its the rider that wins any race not the bike. So its all down to personal preference, colour, sound, feel, style, comfort...everything. My choice was S1000RR because its BMW, and has the safety features i need - cos I'm rubbish. Quickshift is fantastic. Silverstone here i come!!
O how boring it will be if we all rode the same bikes. It's not about how good is your's to mine , but how good to ride with your mates on 1000 different sports bike. To me they are all good bikes. Lets enjoy our freedom on the open road!
why cant they do their testing in an area of the world where it isnt always raining, 50% of these MCN vids are done on wet or moist tracks, really move your location to italy or greece
Hi MCN! I love all your vids and reviews as I use them as the basis above all others.
i did have a question though: How bad is the low to mid-range power on the ZX-10R? Is it bad enough where it wouldn't be a good street bike (as that's where you spend most of your rpm time)? Does it feel completely underpowered when compared to the other 1000's?
The official test in the PS motorcycle magazine (they worked with MCN) told that the SUPERBIKE 2011 is still the BMW s1000rr!!!! Why???
Engine!! In STOCK the tested Kawa zx10r 2011 engine generated 197bhp engine power!!! The tested s1000rr generated 202bhp!!!! Both without any ECU tuning!!! But the most horrible thing is that the Kawa loses 10bhp power to the BMW between 9000 and 10000/min!! And the s1000rr generates 10Nm more torque between 7400 and 12300/min!!
traction control, power control, ABS...what the hell is going on? all that electronical devices are for guys with no bollocks. Anyway the best zx-10r was the 2004-2005 which has fearsome 175HP without any idiot-control! get back to basics...
See Fast Bikes test of stock Ninja ZX-10R in the top speed run, the Ninja ZX-10R smokes the S1000RR in stock Trim Dealer supplied both modes, the Ninja has more power, higher top speeds from a lower price, your BMW was a cheater, the stoch Honda is not in the Race, read Motociclsimo dyno results the Ninja has more power. The BMW in stock trim has less power see these other web site for real bikes punters like you and me can buy.
I have read that the new ZX-10R is detuned and that there is a version with 188 hp thats not available everywhere. I guess they will unleash it when the bike gets refreshed after its two year cycle. The power is supposedly available with a pipe and ecu.
The Kawa is the winner in the most ugly motorcycle competition though. I'm sure it's a great bike but it looks like a turd =P I still would like to try it though ;)
The ZX10R 2011 is for me the king of the 1000cc's sportsbike! S1000RR? A German motorcycle with an inline-four engine which is a japanese engine! Copycat! build your own engine like the italian does!
little bias here since i own a s1000rr but i'm glad the bike held out for another year and looking forward to the the other makes attempt to knock the bmw down. Was fearing the zx10 was going to kill it with the rumors of around 200hp.
@laxxxxxxen The BMW S1000RR is an eyesore. The non-matching mid fairings and the cock-eyed headlights don't do it any justice in the looks dept. If you think all bikes but the BMW are ugly, I'd like to know what you ride currently.
@Adeysworld Atleast the BMW has proportions. And if you noticed, the whole bike asymmetrical. So to not be like the rest they put on a enduro light there which in my opinion is super sexy because it´s giving the impression of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Think about,
What i ride now or have ridden is irrelevant when talking about design and proportions m8.
Take a good look at the bikes and really study them and you will see that all except the BMW have weird proportions, like the frontend on Kawa.
@hikoseijuro24 Your whole genepool is ugly idiot. BMW´s are for those who know design and appreciate innovation. The Kawa looks like a piece of shit. Why not write Turtles along the side of it aswell.
@hikoseijuro24 wat is it with the S1000rr? ugly colors and headlights designed by drunks, wat do people see in this bike? just don't get it. performance is great, but don't wanna be seen riding an ugly thing with wheels.
After watching this video again, it's extremely hard to take anything away from this. It's not in depth enough to be a real comparison video. This is more a teaser video than a "actual" comparison video. Maybe there are more details in the article I dunno, I'm just not sold on this would-be comparison. Tell us more about the TC on the Kawasaki. How does it compare to that of the BMW's TC? I'm pretty sure if this vid was 30 mins, no one would complain, as long as the content is good. hint hint
As a matter of interest, how many commenting doubters have ridden the new ZX-10R, especially in the company of its competitors? Lastly, it is a bloody good bike in its own right; a brilliant road bike and serious track tool - like the BMW but not quite. The BMW is a sledgehammer.

"Like the BMW, but not quite." That seems to be a fitting statement. I can live with that.

@motorcyclenewsdotcom ok one thing i still do not understand about your review. the yamaha won in 2009 (dont agree it should have but thats just me). How does a 2008 cbr win over the 2009 yamaha that won over the cbr in one of the previous years. he did say 1:03 it is the oldest. In 1:15 the yamaha won. can you explain this too me. why did the cbr win over the yamaha? Im not a yamaha fan just trying to understand how you guy get your results.
@thenam3lessthurst My guess is that everyone was so enamored by the crossplane crank, how it sounded, that it was a fundamental mechanical improvement instead of just electronics or tinkering, etc. But now the oooo-ing and ahhh-ing is over and the bike ends up where it should have been all along. Not that I have nothing against the R1, I like it a lot.Just guessing.
@UCMolosser Makes sense or they just can't give a good proper and comparative review. Its been over a month, they still haven't even answered my question, and a lot of other peoples question. I think they need to be more active in the discussions on there own reviews. They put out a review with questions that need answers. But my question still stands and I'm still wondering why they did it in the rain too. This wasn't a good review and not from good reviewers obviously. Thanks for commenting
@motorcyclenewsdotcom who do you feel powerband hit harder? bmw more hardest this bikes? but at 4:27 bmw over take one bike VERY EASY, but is that bike doing full throttle? no lies thanks :) but i want to see bmw ve each bikes liters bike at straight i want to see who wins, but want bmw let any of one bike at 5 bike length ahead then go! see if bmw can over take :)
@motorcyclenewsdotcom i saw one video bmw vs cbr1000rr race at might night, why bmw really really hard to make it over take? what the hell? bmw got much more power, i want bmw win! but bmw dont win that easy make me disappoint on bmw little :(
The lap times weren't the best, agreed. But the track was damp in places and extremely cold with a strong wind blowing. Other ACU licence holders and competent, dedicated trackday riders were also struggling to match previous lap times. All the same, they weren't bad for road bikes with standard road suspension, lights, bodywork reg plate, fast road/occasional trackday rubber.
The revised claimed peak power of the replacement ECU is 4bhp - this wouldn't be apparent with a standard exhaust, plus the bike would run extremely rich, which it didn't. And besides, take off the claimed 4bhp increase (at the crankshaft even) and you'd end up with a respectable rear wheel bhp figure compared to the Kawasaki tested on the same dyno. If you're still not convinced, tough.
@motorcyclenewsdotcom The BMW Power Boost Kit ECU makes 12-14 HP not 4HP as claimed, take a show room BMW and swap the ECU then redo the Dyno. Did you have the optional quick shifter or was it also fitted stock? Do you know the BMW with the full Kit Akropovic makes 195hp about 10 more than just the Power Boost ECU Kit, the Stock BMW is rated by BMW at 192.5hp. Take off 15% for the transmission losses and you get a lot less power than the 2 hp you claimed.
Let me set your minds at rest. The BMW was completely standard. There was no Power Commander attached - we check for such things when bikes are prepared for dynamometer testing. And the ECU was a stock BMW ECU, the same as you or I would find on a bike purchased from a BMW dealer - the uprated ECU only works correctly in conjunction with an aftermarket race exhaust system, and peak rpm remained the same.
@BMWRWankers the S1000rr's top speed 178mph? LOL this isnt the K1200s BMW, pal. As for a customers BMW being 190hp or so, well lets say that all depends on the Dyno and how well its was calibrated. remember the S1000rr inline 4 engine architecture is extremely oversquare easing the RPM's higher band for more HP. Hope i didnt leave you clueless....
Coments. The critique on the R1 seemed to be price biased. Is it more expensive in the UK than an S1000RR? And, was that the point of the exercise? Four Jap bikes, one Euro ... fair comparo when RSV4 et al are mentioned and omitted. Kwaka loses by comment by its power being made right at the top end ... tell me thats not exactly where the BMW delivers its grunt, yet loses ... just because? Possibly not much time to put the comments together but sometimes the less said ...
No KTM, Ducati, aprilia and MV Augusta? They don t count? I would never rely on these guys for input on my next bike. BMW is heads and shoulders above the rest? Show the lap times, price of each machine, maint cost and so on? Heads and shoulders above? I don't think so.
Soooo... in 2009 the R1 wins the group. In 2011 it comes after the CBR? A bike that is the same as 2008 other than ABS? I love the CBR '08, hey I ride one, but it is a bit odd the standings...
This is just personal opinions from MCN and not bike performance on track. We are also talking about over all package here. Give some track times. "Anyone can drive a fast bike, few can drive a bike fast."
Guys it´s all about fun at the end of the day. ... but I have a s 1000 rr ... haha Kawa haha :) one should not be lying on the horse power ... come on 200,1 bhp ... I never believed it
Ninja dude, you're wrong. BMW didn't lie or cheat, if anything they under quoted power at the crank, not over quoted like we've seen other manufacturers do in the past. The dyno results from Akrapovic website put the bmw about 5-6 hp peak up on the klacka.
so fucking typical MCN.. yea yea your the only ones!!!! and stop fucking talking about the midrange on the zx10r because that is the SAME PROBLEM THE BMW HAS.. we beat the bmw rr with every fuking liter bike when it comes to a roll race 50-60mph-150-160mph .. silly kids you are.. and stop sleep with the bmw director!!!!!!!! the zx10r traction control system is FAR more sofisticated!!! even said buy a motogp dirver..
I lil' Biased on your S1K there? S1K's electronic better than 10R? I understand the power but electronics? In 2009 R1 Moved from 1st to 4th just because of the price? (I thought your reviewing how well the bikes are?) You didn't complain about Duccatis or the RSV4s price in other reviews when it cost more than that of the other bikes. Where is the RSV4? I think 10R is best bang for ur bucks. 1.) Zed 2.) S1k (I see Zed and S1K being close) 3.) R1 4.) CBR (I see CBR and R! being close) 5.) GSX
@plaid4u you might not get rain but up in scotland we get the cold stuff from siberia. were usually at least 3 degrees behind london. Cold coupled with rain does NOT make good riding conditions :(
@fastkid392 I don't think that's the reason for them not including the Ducati. If that was the case, the Aprilia and KTM would have been present. Probably the only bikes they could get together at the time..I dunno.
For this to be a true liter bike test it would have to include the 1198, RSV4 and RC8. MV Agusta is always forgotten in these test...same way they are forgotten on the race track. Snap*! lol
the zx10 has more power than the bmw. these guys must have been testing these bikes on a go-kart track or something. dont trust these tests, there all personal opinion. get your own personal opinion viewers.
abs, traction controle, different mappings...hey: my hayabusa is ten years old: has none of that stuff: I HAVE IT ALL: it is called my fucking RIGHT HAND!!! I don't want no bloody electronics fucking up my ride!!!On trackdays I call the shots, not a bunch of gizmo's slowing me down!
to be honest, this result would seem about right. the question is, will honda or even suzuki decide to flex their muscles in 2012? I would guess that they`ll decide to regain some lost ground and kudos that they have and release their versions of a top superbike. but as someone else quoted, its only saloon bar bragging rights and has little bearing in the real world....
just remember to wear a condom when you're going to make sweet sweet love to it :D

can't stand the ugliness of the S1000rr, I would buy that thing in a flash if weren't for the drunken BMW engineer when designing the headlights. All the other players are out of the game, zx10r all the way!!! owned 2009 gixxer 1000 and 2010 R1...I would pick the gixxer over the two any day.

AFireInside904 10 months ago
Why on earth would you put a control tyre on the bikes, it should be done with whatever it comes from the factory with, this way you can see what is truly a street-bike, track-bike and which bike is balanced in between. If the tyre that comes standard is hindering performance, say that, but the manufacturers shouldn't get a free pass when it comes to which rubber they wear.
Everything else top notch!!!

Ill take the GSX-R 1000 anyday I love it
All the Traction COntrols and Mods fair enought they help riding but its becoming like Ferraris now you dont Ride the New Bikes anymore they Ride you. I think Id prefer to buy a 1990's GSX-R than a new one to be Honest. Yes it wont handle as good but it means your be a better Rider as you have to Ride it properly :)

wtf! BMW March eNewsletter linked the photo of Dystany Spurlock (followed by an article about how she raced Jeremy Teasley) to this unrelated video about the S1000RR. This pisses me off. I hold BMW to a higher standard than this.

My youngest son Chad rode a KWS built BMW at the same event and ran 203+.
I'm running the Texas Mile next month and I'm hoping there is a new ZX10R there to run faster than the Bimmers..........Go Green!

Thanks for any feedback you can give.
light317 1 year ago
Green beast??? Sorry!!!!

Man that kawa is one ugly bike. Infact all bikes except the BMW look hideous tbh.
Proportions is a word the japanese have no idea it exists.
laxxxxxxen 1 year ago
@laxxxxxxen The BMW S1000RR is an eyesore. The non-matching mid fairings and the cock-eyed headlights don't do it any justice in the looks dept. If you think all bikes but the BMW are ugly, I'd like to know what you ride currently.
Adeysworld 1 year ago
@Adeysworld Atleast the BMW has proportions. And if you noticed, the whole bike asymmetrical. So to not be like the rest they put on a enduro light there which in my opinion is super sexy because it´s giving the impression of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Think about,
What i ride now or have ridden is irrelevant when talking about design and proportions m8.
Take a good look at the bikes and really study them and you will see that all except the BMW have weird proportions, like the frontend on Kawa.

I'm pretty sure if this vid was 30 mins, no one would complain, as long as the content is good. hint hint

In 1:15 the yamaha won. can you explain this too me. why did the cbr win over the yamaha? Im not a yamaha fan just trying to understand how you guy get your results.
thenam3lessthurst 1 year ago 14
@thenam3lessthurst My guess is that everyone was so enamored by the crossplane crank, how it sounded, that it was a fundamental mechanical improvement instead of just electronics or tinkering, etc. But now the oooo-ing and ahhh-ing is over and the bike ends up where it should have been all along. Not that I have nothing against the R1, I like it a lot.Just guessing.

@UCMolosser Makes sense or they just can't give a good proper and comparative review. Its been over a month, they still haven't even answered my question, and a lot of other peoples question. robertmike219 9 months ago
The lap times weren't the best, agreed. But the track was damp in places and extremely cold with a strong wind blowing. Other ACU licence holders and competent, dedicated trackday riders were also struggling to match previous lap times. All the same, they weren't bad for road bikes with standard road suspension, lights, bodywork reg plate, fast road/occasional trackday rubber.
motorcyclenewsdotcom 1 year ago 2
The revised claimed peak power of the replacement ECU is 4bhp - this wouldn't be apparent with a standard exhaust, plus the bike would run extremely rich, which it didn't. And besides, take off the claimed 4bhp increase (at the crankshaft even) and you'd end up with a respectable rear wheel bhp figure compared to the Kawasaki tested on the same dyno. If you're still not convinced, tough.
motorcyclenewsdotcom 1 year ago
@motorcyclenewsdotcom The BMW Power Boost Kit ECU makes 12-14 HP not 4HP as claimed, take a show room BMW and swap the ECU then redo the Dyno. Did you have the optional quick shifter or was it also fitted stock? Do you know the BMW with the full Kit Akropovic makes 195hp about 10 more than just the Power Boost ECU Kit, the Stock BMW is rated by BMW at 192.5hp. Take off 15% for the transmission losses and you get a lot less power than the 2 hp you claimed.
BMWRWankers 1 year ago
Let me set your minds at rest. The BMW was completely standard. There was no Power Commander attached - we check for such things when bikes are prepared for dynamometer testing. And the ECU was a stock BMW ECU, the same as you or I would find on a bike purchased from a BMW dealer - the uprated ECU only works correctly in conjunction with an aftermarket race exhaust system, and peak rpm remained the same.
motorcyclenewsdotcom 1 year ago
@motorcyclenewsdotcom
MCN You have never ridden a stock BMW, so how can you compare?
See a real comparision on Fast Bikes Magazine. They tested stock bikes sames as we all can buy.
BMW top speed 178mph, 2011 Ninja ZX-10R 186.8mph.
No customers BMW has 190hp out of the crate.
Ask BMW to fit the Power Boost ECU to your high performance test bike to see if it changes the performance?
It will not make any changes because it is already fitted!!!!!!!!!
BMWRWankers 1 year ago
@BMWRWankers what is wrong with you? so how sure are you that fastbikes magazine uses a stock zx10r.
mi2tom 1 year ago
@BMWRWankers the S1000rr's top speed 178mph? LOL this isnt the K1200s BMW, pal. As for a customers BMW being 190hp or so, well lets say that all depends on the Dyno and how well its was calibrated. remember the S1000rr inline 4 engine architecture is extremely oversquare easing the RPM's higher band for more HP. Hope i didnt leave you clueless....
Ryknfjor 1 year ago
