i cant help myself but are you just making it up as you go along? you've mixed the lyrics of one song with the tune of an entirely different song. like switching the E strings on a guitar and calling it a banjo. not really not even close. yes dwight is a master on banjo who is capable of a fiddle tune or two, whats next f scott fitzgerald taught jimmy the star spangled banner? and francis scott key is a dance hall sensation from australia
@message2rudie As you probably know many old time tunes sound similar , and yes sometimes I do just make stuff up as I go. Sorry if I pissed you off. I'm kind of weird I suppose as I like to have a little fun with playing music. Thanks for your comments.
have you tried to sing the lyrics posted with the tune you are playing? if so does it work? i believe you are confusing the song "red rocking chair" aka "sugar babe" the tune you're playing with another song entitled "sugar babe", a popular blues song recorded by many including Mance Libscomb which are the lyrics you have posted. the "cuckoo" is not the same as "cuckoo's nest"
Someone said once (I think it was Steve Martin) that you can't feel sad when you're playing the banjo. It made me realize I needed to make a banjo playlist.
Thanks for the comment, that's the great thing about making music, you can take an arrangement ,mess around with it and call it your own.
I was using a tab I found on Mr. Dwight Diller's web site however his sounds way different than my version. In case you have never heard of him he is one helluva old time West Va. banjo and fiddle player.Check him out!!
Well your miles ahead of me... I actually just got my first banjo and instrument just the other day. I barely put new strings on it and tuned it. Now Its practice time. Any suggestions of were to learn clawhammer or the frailing?
Congratulations on the banjo, you will no doubt have a blast with it.I have pretty much learned from Dvds and books but I have learned a bunch from folks here on "YouTube".Check out "The Banjo Hangout" and also EZfolk on the internet. There are several other sites as well. Good luck
Hey thanks for the encouragement. I have seen the Banjo Hangout board. I been reading it. I now got to learn how to do the clawhammer and get the strum and pick technique out of it. But need to see it close up on video so I can see how its actually done. Which of the DVD's out there do you recommend?
I liked Dan Levensons video "Clawhammer From Scratch.Ken Pearlman has a good video or two also.Zepp Country music has a couple of instructional videos or two here on youtube.
I agree Send2meez... I can picture riding on the open car of a rail car in the south. Feet dangling musket in hand and leather pouches at my side. A tin of snuff and a bottle of whiskey and my brothers by my side..
Thanks I appreciate it. I just came back from Grass Valley from bluegrass festival. I saw some incredible pickers and singers. I got to meet and hang out with "Dan Tymanski" and "Rob Ickes" from Blue Highway. I meet the whole band and was able to hang out with the entire band and Rob Ickes family. Great set of folks. They taught me a few things. I met and was talking "Doyle Lawson" I hung out with them at there big Motor Home. I was blown away being around of all them people.

great playing, nice to hear an instrumental version of this piece

nice Dock Boggs style on this, or does this arrangement predate Boggs?
I was actually youtubing for a version more like Mance Lipscomb plays which is very different, major key and upbeat.
