3:13 Wow, their bass player looked like Freddie Mercury.
When I graduated from HS this song was played after the ceremony as we went out hootin and hollerin. Of course it's been played at every reunion along with other period mid to late 70's music.
I remember reading about them in magazines like Kerrang in the 80´s and couldn´t really understand it - to me there´s nothing heavy metal about them, they´re more like Lloyd Webber with more guitars. JY is trying hard to keep up the ROCKER element with his long hair and rough voice, but I don´t think that glittery top he´s wearing in this clip does much for his hard guy persona. They had some fantastic songs though, especially Tommy Shaw´s.
There were such unique personalities in this band -- Dennis was the uppity white guy who acted snobby......Tommy Shaw was like the little runt who tried extra hard to prove himself......James Young was the long-haired rocker dude.......and the bass player and drummer were the nerdy quiet types
Dennis de Young has an amazing voice. Freddie Mercury had just as an amazing voice. yet when Dennis had a 'stash it was cool, when Freddie had one it was gay. I don't care. They were both great singers and I will never forget what they brought to my music!!

I actually prefer Cartman's version as well, not the most beautiful voice, but Trey Parker put more emotion into his performance than the Styx singer.
Great song...they never get the credit they deserve...I just can't figure out why bands like Styx, Journey and REO get ripped by the so called...experts...true rock
I don't think that South Park ruined the song. You may think that way if you hate South Park.I find South park as a genius masterpiece and Eric Cartman sing this song of hope... (:sweeeeeeeeeeet:)
And of course that america will see that again, you have it here on you tube, check it out ;) :PPP
A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand;sorry i didnt want that happening to me
let's be honest, that outro solo starting at 5:48 was pretty miserable... rest of the song was good, but i could've improvised a better solo than that... are this guys solos always this scattered and unmelodic?
I would disagree with that statement. Dennis DeYoung isnt the rocker in the band he always wants the theatrical shows where JY and TS are rockers.Larry Gowan IMO is better in the band. Check him out on I dont need no Dr. he rocks.
hmm...so yeah when you go to a gig you just sit there stoneyfaced, occasionally jumping a little bit..then at the end of the set you stand there without clapping so the band thinks that wherever you were was the worst place to play a gig.....not really likely to happen is it? eeejit
In my opinion I think Styx and Boston were kind of alike. I mean they both kind of used the organ and they just have that same style of playing. In other words I think Styx is a great band!
You are definately correct and it is a shame. They were awesome back in the mid 80s when I saw them in jax florida. Have heard lately that they just do not sound good anymore so I will keep the memory of the old VH concerts I saw back then.
I do wish dennis could return to styx tho. I think they would sound just like the old styx because i have seen them many times over the years and they always put on a great show. No disrespect to gowan but would love to see them re-unite...
Who? Tommy Shaw? Yeah. He's a supurb musician/guitarist/song writer/mandolin player/keyboardist/pianist/singer. Lol. I'm also astonished that Gibson hasn't made him a signature guitar yet.
Intersting.... rarely see vintage performances with guys/girls wearing earplugs. As a sufferer of tinnitus (ringing in the ears)I can definitely relate to why he is wearing them !!!

What destroyed this great band was what I would call an identity crisis. DeYoung fancied stage performance while Shaw and co. held true to their rocker persona. It's a shame because man are they talented. I like Van Haggar but seriously... it doesn't hold Van Halen with DLR's jockstrap
I've seen STYX many times and they still rock but it would be awesome if they would let dennis return.Much like VH without DLRoth but now that DLR is back with VH wouldn't it be nice if STYX were to get dennis back?Seeing Dennis when i was a teen inspired me to learn how to play keys myself and I finally got me an Oberheim obxa and ob8 just so i could get "that sound".Gowan has my respect but I like dennis better.
DLR is no longer cool in my book. Saw a Van Halen concert and I was appalled. Wolfgang is crap, eddie will stop playing in the middle of a song to pull his guitar cord, and DLR will look goofy and do kung-fu moves.....man i was so excited to go to the concert...
This is the real Styx, it is a shame what Tommy and JY are doing now, Gowan is not Dennis, and the current lineup is no more than a cover band in my opinion.
Chuck is just as much a part of this lineup. Can't remember Gowan saying he is Dennis. How is Dennis doing these songs not considered covers? It goes both ways.
I agree , Chuck is part of the lineup, my mistake. There would be no Styx without Dennis, this is my opinion.I did not say Gowan said he was trying to be like Dennis,I think he does on ok job of Dennis's songs,I guess it would be like Rod Stewart being the lead singer of Aerosmith, Rod is a great singer...but....
Did you know that the contents of what you read on Wikipedia is posted by anyone who owns a computer? It should never be relied as concrete "facts". In Styx's case there is way more to it than that. Get the book "The Grand Delusion", it will explain all and is very interesting reading.
