The rivalry ended when Detroit whooped Colorado's ass 7-0 in game seven of the 02 playoffs. It was a great rivalry up until then but it has been long dead.
colorado won the series in 96 4 games to 2. the lemuiex hit happened in game 6 when the aves won. that was the conference finals, and they went on to win the cup in 7 games against the panthers. they would meet again in the conference finals the next year, which was decided in six games with Detroit winning and going on to sweep the Flyers in the finals to win the 97 cup.

To me the best was the 2008-2009 series. Franzen ALONE had more goals in that series than the whole Colorado Avalanche team. Broke Gordie Howe's playoff record.
I always said - when Patrick Roy retired - it would be a MINIMUM of 25 years before the Avalanche made it back to the Finals....so far so good !

Colorado versus Detroit was a battle in the late 90s, almost like a war, and it seems that Detroit won that round in those years

I second that! Now that Joe Sakic has retired, there only Adam Foote is left (and he was in Columbus for a while so you may not even count him) on Colorado from the good ol' days of this rivalry.
As much as I HATE the Red Wings, I respect them just as equally, and I am really looking forward to Colorado becoming a power in the West again so we can get this great rivalry back to the level that it was.
And Wings fans....I know, its going to be a while.

Detorit was more consistant having a better spread of players then Colorado have had.
I'm always a Red Wings fan, but I like the Aves from time to time, and for me those years were great. It doesn't matter who has won more cups or not. It's about the fact they were the two that made hockey as great as it was then and still is. Time's moved on for both of them. Colorado haven't quite been the same for a while but Detorit remains highly consistent. That is all

That final game 7 was such an incredible game. I remember it like yesterday...watching Roy get absolutely owned.
Every Detroit fan remembers the heartbreak when we lost to Colorado....then finally seeing it all turn around was nothing short of magnificent.

colorado won the series in 96 4 games to 2. the lemuiex hit happened in game 6 when the aves won. that was the conference finals, and they went on to win the cup in 7 games against the panthers. they would meet again in the conference finals the next year, which was decided in six games with Detroit winning and going on to sweep the Flyers in the finals to win the 97 cup.

As a die hard Avs fan, it's in my blood to despise the Wings...but damn, that was the best hockey I've ever seen between the two from 97-02.
