a few years ago in the uk 2 of these were cut up and buried when the opencast was closed as scrap at the time was worthless, did a few repairs on them when they were working, awesome machines!
bw & cojailer, NO, this is the one that worked in Chandler, IN at AMAX's Ayshire Mine. It was scrapped I think in2005 and yes Riverbilly, a man did die from what I understand a large cable was cut, ran through one of the shieves and decapitated him. A friend that ran a BE dragline at Peabody's Squaw Creek mine next to Ayrshire said here in the So. IN area they are "slope" mining now and it is very hard on these large machines. That's why you don't see them around much anymore.
Is this the same dragline in Harco Illinois out side of Harisburg. If it is, I belive it is still sitting on the road. It makes me want to go take some pics of it this weekend and post them on here.
A scrapper can make several million on one of these. Unfortunately, many of these great machines have already met the scrappers torch. Its sad, really. =/
What a HUGE machine! I have some of the same pics as I used to haul rock to Ayrshire for the inclines and haul roads in the late 80's. This sometimes got me right next to it. The same thing happened a couple of years ago to Lynnville's Marion 5900 sitting in Eby field next to Tecumseh Lake. Sad, Sad, Sad!
Nice compilation of photos. I should know, I took a bunch of them that you have at the end there. The 3270 really needs to be seen in person to truly know how big these machines are. It's just awesome. You can see my Expedition is just dwarfed next to that thing, and I look like a 5 year old kid in the bucket, even though I'm 6'2" 250lbs.
nice slideshow, some of these pics i havent seen, i have many pics of the one in illinois.they are going to cut it up soon, what a sad waste to an awsome machine!!
my dream is to work on this
