Basically what they did here was take some of the setting and a few character names and put them together in an entirely different way. Ursula LeGuin (the original author) expressed disappointment at seeing her story ripped to shreds like this.

Also - this wasn't actually directed by Miyazaki... it was done by his son.

And it apparently sucks pretty bad...
