Both Shackleford and Dialed In ran a great race. I gotta say, I have a soft spot for Shackleford. He just seems to give it his all. I was rooting for him in the Kentucky Derby...little underdog has a lot of heart!
@GreenDayCusack 1) Shackleford likes to run up front & few horses have the stamina to win wire-to-wire at 1-1/8 mile; 2) Dale Romans doesn't bet his horses.
Dialed In does look the obvious choice, which makes me suspicious all of a sudden. Seems like we just might have less pace than anticipated which only makes the Derby that much more to handicap. We seem to have a crop of late bloomers poised to pounce down the lane and Dialed In just might not get the best of it. I've always liked Sway Away and think he's yet to explode.
this race doesn't show me much...fast numbers starting out and a lot of them didnt have much left..last quarter was 26 seconds and last 1/8 in 14 seconds..not impressive at all
Anyone else noticed that Shackleford galloped out better that Dialed In by several lenghts? That does not bode well for Dialed In, he was spent after 9 furlongs, IMO.
@DiamondMasters I think he was already being pulled up and Shackleford wasn't being pulled back as much. There's a difference in how the jocks are standing in their stirrups- Dialed In's was standing and pulling, Shackleford's was slightly standing but still letting him run a bit. Maybe that's just me but that's what I saw. 2:56
My guess is no! Every one of these 'professional' handicappers ALWAYS seem to get it WRONG. They underestimated Zenyatta, overplayed Dunkirk, Looking At Lucky, Soldat, Mucho Macho Man, Quality Road, and others time and time again. The BEST horses don't always win. "Super Saver" and "Mine That Bird" were guided by a great ride and MTB had the fluke pedigree that seems to bring home long shots in Triple Crown races. ICE BOX only had one great race before almost scoring last year. Pay attention!!!
@MichaelDominici yes...many people say with a tad more luck ice box wins that race...it was an incredible run...remember monarchos in 2001 with that amazing pace up top and in 2005 with giacomo...another amazing pace...i'm saying this...110-111 pace a closer has a great chance to win this race....dialed in...arch arch arch...and look out for anthony's cross (california)
Sure, there are many factors to consider handicapping the Kentucky Derby -who gets in, what posts etc. But, horses tend to do what they do then it's a question of being denied their running style...that's why the jockey is important and the pace scenario even more so. Everyone is so keen on Uncle Mo and The Factor but, they are just two of the potential pace horses and they've had it easy in every race so far. Yes, they are both impressive, but...can they handle a grueling pace THEN still close?
it's amazing that everyone is picking their Derby winners without seeing the final field, the post positions (what if Uncle Mo posts last? Dialed In at the rail?) You're just going with the horse regardless? That's only worked once in the last 10 years. Uncle Mo has had little competition this year and this Florida Derby is pretty hard to analyze....the only thing I'm impressed with here is that Dialed In showed heart and determination - but impressive run? impressive race? I'm struggling.
this goes to show how bad this crop of 3 year olds really are.dialed closed into a 26 last quarter and barely won.watch when this horse closes into a horse like uncle mo who doesnt quit.this looked like a 5k claiming race at penn nat coming home.we will see a triple crown winner this year with uncle mo and not because he is that good its because these 3 year olds are garbage.i love how people think dialed in is gonna be so good cause of his bloodlines.best 3 year old is frankel in europe.
@tjjlm444 Dialed In just makes them LOOK bad. Take a look at his pedigree: Mineshaft, who has Mr. Prospector on his damside, and Eliza on the damside, via Miss Doolittle, which crosses Storm Cat and Blushing Groom (sire of Runaway Groom who sired Cherokee Run btw, and BG sired Arazi).
Dialed In is bred out the wazoo and should go off as the favorite on Derby Day, if the smart money checks in. I got him in pool 1 at 8-1.
Zito was floored by this performance why? Because it wasn't about the TIME is was about Dialed In overcoming a persistent speed bias to nail Shackleford, who clearly had a freak/fluke race because the other trainers/jockeys decided to rate their horses because the seemingly was no need to consider Shackleford a threat. I hope he gets into the Kentucky Derby and sizzles the fractions as he kicks dirt in the favorites faces just before he fades to last, setting the stage for the closers.
WTF is up with Soldat? Never seen him perform this bad.
Can´t say I was too impressed with anyone in this race tho, the winner ran his lungs out to overtake a 60-1 longshot. I don´t want to give up on Soldat just yet, but throwing a clunker like this in his final prep is not good... =(
@DartsRme312 He needs a sloppy track. If he has Calvin Borel on him you should watch out. He needs a ride down the rail and Calvin can very well do that.
i expect dialed in and uncle moe to put in a good effort in the KY Derby, but i think a longshot will pull off the upset this yr...everyone...look out for Bo-Rail!!
first SOLDAT, FLASHPOINT wasnt fast enough to go to lead. now SOLDAT was rangle off for a reason. thats what they wanted. now slow final time yea but if u look at other races at the meet at route there all not blistering fast at theend. the track wasnt different yesterday like a poster said. its been this way all meet. UNCLE MO will not be on lead in derby he will rate like he did in BREEDERS CUP.
"Wall of horses" Guess you've never head of Zenyatta, More to the point "Mine That Bird' and "Street Sense" both came from near dead last to blow away the field like they weren't even there. Then, last year clearly "Ice Box" would have run down "Super Saver" had he not incurred traffic trouble earlier. Early speed spell doom in most Kentucky Derby races. "Winning Colors," "Go For Gin" and "War Emblem" are the exception, not the norm. And in all THREE of those wire jobs had uncontested leads!
Final Time 150 and change? Hardly see any of these horses winning the derby. Shackleford is a 50k claimer at best. Dialed In Wont be able to make up that kind of ground with the wall of horses standing in front of him in the derby. To Honor and Serve, I see as having the best chance. In this race, and The fountain of Youth he just never seemed to find his stride and neither race he never looked to settle in on the back stretch. Flash Point looked very green in this race and could improve also.
Keep in mind folks.......on Derby day at GP that track is basicly shaved down to nothing for extreme speed. (everybody likes exciting track records on big days). So......the fact that Dailed In managed to come off the pace was absolutely massive. To Honor n Serve also ran a big race to hold 3rd with such insane early fractions.
The anomally is Shackleford........if the track remains extremely fast on derby day he could pose a very dangerouse wire to wire threat.
@badjockey I have Dialed In hammered over To Honor And Serve in all three futures exacta pools. It's paying anywhere from < 300 in the last pool to around 350-400 in the others, and I have multiple tickets. Also have Dialed In at 8-1 to win the race.
The Factor and Uncle Mo seemed destined to be involved in a furious speed dual or worse if you through in a couple of long-shot rabbits into the mix. Haven't we seen this over and over again? Dialed In is the most impressive in terms of style, heart, and growth...scary like Curlin. I can also see a few others chasing him home right past the tiring favorites to make for juicy exotic pay-outs. Initially, I liked "Sway Away" but, not sure he has the stakes money to get in. Premier Pegasus fits too.
@scionnole Perhaps you might know who exactly is he running against in there?? I've been trying to find a list of probables for the Wood at least, but so far nothing, its all about Uncle Mo. I heard maybe Jaycito, but he's more likely for Santa Anita Derby. THe way they've been talking it seems he is the only one running in there. So is Uncle Mo going to have zero direct competition in the Wood??
Dialed in made his usual run. He is very good. When Soldat did not fire and flash couldn't make the lead, shackleford inherited the front. He was able to hang in because no one moved at him until the winner. Nite the the third quarter was pedestrian. All we know is with a clean trip dialed in is legit. More legit than Mo. I would not be quick to dismiss Soldat, he us better than this.
Fantastic race for Dialed In, he's been my derby pick since the Holy Bull, and he'll be my pick when he enters the gate on May 7 at Churchill. Uncle Mo better watch out.
@BettorOffSingle Make that 5-1, so much for the 10-1 we were getting yesterday, and about 5 minutes before the post of the Florida Derby. Not surprised though, all it takes is a race like this for his bandwagon to suddenly explode.
@d9y8l7a6n5 I've been on him since Pool 1, got him on top of a lot of horses in the futures exacta, especially To Honor And Serve. He looks great for the Derby for a trainer who has won the race twice.
@Pippin76 lol dialed in is a lock to win derby like i said before on here...lol at soldat?? wont hit derby ticket neither will uncle moe or honor and serve..its all about dialed in like it has been since nove 12th bro...derby throwouts are the easiest part..the factor, soldat, honor and serve is a need the lead horse and cant pass horses and tbh not really that good or fast maybe when he and uncle mo get those 5 horse fields vs garbage and walk in 24-25 you all assume they are good...DIALED IN !
In retrospect that field was stacked
