Stillmatic is only held as a classic by Nas fans, people with respected insights on music will tell you otherwise.

But either way, It Was Written made Nas go from "that dope underground rapper" to "the shit", from then all the way until Hip-Hop Is Dead dropped (although that came very close to ending with Nastradamus). Illmatic was what got Nas recognized, but IWW was what got him famous. I know a lot of Jigga-riders/Nas haters that can't deny that IWW and Stillmatic are both classics. I feel you on the Lost Tapes bit, though.
@ReturnOfTheZ Can't disagree it made him popular, but it's not a renowned hip hop classic, doubt it will ever be. Stillmatic is probably an underground classic, but it's vastly overrated because it revived Nas' career. To be honest, the first half is about on par with the first half of Illmatic, but the second half drowns it, I'm sure many hip hop reviewers have said this (especially with that weak Bravehearts joint.)

That Braveheart song is the only weak song on the whole album and in the revised version he had it taken off. Stillmatic is classic.

As for rap battling, I don't think L could even beat Nas in that. Look back at Ether and Don't Body Yaself. Dude made Jay-Z cry on the radio and scared 50 Cent into silence. All L can do is punchlines, I doubt he can go after someone's soul teh way Nas can. And Pap is just terrible in every way.

Big L never had to go out for somebody like Nas did Jay Z because nobody wanted it with him, kind of like Rakim in '88 because based on his songs released and his freestyles he was lethal. Papoose isn't horrible at all man, maybe his songs are to rugged/hardcore for you.

The voice of the fanbase is more important than those of the reviewers, though. No matter what reviewers say, Stillmatic, IWW, and hell, even Lost Tapes, are all widely recognized as classics of the genre. Same way Lifestylez is, despite not getting particularly great reviews.

Stillmatic is only held as a classic by Nas fans, people with respected insights on music will tell you otherwise.

But either way, It Was Written made Nas go from "that dope underground rapper" to "the shit", from then all the way until Hip-Hop Is Dead dropped (although that came very close to ending with Nastradamus). Illmatic was what got Nas recognized, but IWW was what got him famous. I know a lot of Jigga-riders/Nas haters that can't deny that IWW and Stillmatic are both classics. I feel you on the Lost Tapes bit, though.

Stillmatic is probably an underground classic, but it's vastly overrated because it revived Nas' career. To be honest, the first half is about on par with the first half of Illmatic, but the second half drowns it, I'm sure many hip hop reviewers have said this (especially with that weak Bravehearts joint.)

That Braveheart song is the only weak song on the whole album and in the revised version he had it taken off. Stillmatic is classic.

Those tracks aren't special when comparing them to the first half of the album, or many other songs on OTHER hip hop albums regarded as classics.
