Yes, this is a scary video--Scotties are so prone to drowning, so we don't let our little guy near the water without his doggie vest. I hope these people know that so that Lana won't have a very sad accident.
My Scottie loves swimming. Although I always keep him on the leash and watch him, also let him sweem only in shallow water along the shore line. I do not know why but he adores water, always ready to jump into a bathtub, a fountain or other body of water. He is a Scottish water dog.....lol
Ours' loves the water too-we have her in a lifejacket, and it's the funniest thing ever! More than anything else, however, she loves to pull up the seaweed. Awesome! Thanks for posting.
People need to calm down. The dog is in shallow water, and being supervised. I have a scottish terrier, and I let him come in the pool with me; however, i always hold him, unless he wants to swim ( a few feet only), if we are out in the boat on a lake or something, though, I definitely keep a doggie lifejacket on him :) Which he looks adorable in.
Scotties can swim, they are not as buoyant as other dogs, perhaps due to their sturdy mass. My boy does like to go for a deep paddle in the loch, but doesn't venture out of his depth much.
The dog is swimming voluntarily, and going good so relax people! Scottish terriers CAN swim, every dog can, it's just that scotties are at a disadvantage due to their short terrier legs, and many are not used to swimming so it's dangerous to them. Just like a kid, give them swimming lessons while they are young so they won't drown if they accidentally fall in water!
@BOOMowned1 it's a good training to let them swim but you should have ALWAYS an eye on your dog like if it was a baby... even with the biggest dogs, all the dogs i had they swam good but i had to resque one that was swimming on the sea when he only was used to swim on pools, and he got scared and started to drawn cause of fatigue and i was right next to them so i grabbed him and brought him to the coast... now he is affraid of swimming even in pools
why are you assuming the dog owners are going to be irresponsible enough to let their dog drown? I would think they are intelligent enough to tell the difference from a dog having fun and one that is sinking. i
Please keep in mind that Scotties aren't ment to swim! Their legs are to short to support their weight! I have a Scottie of my own and she loves water. This summer my dad put her in the pool and she slowly started to sink. We have a foot bath that is about 2 inches and she loves that. She scratches the bottom and then she tips it over. Then we fill it up again. lol.
Scottie dogs aren't swimmers! They're legs are too short. They're bodies are not made for it. =( If you want your dog to play in the water, get a baby pool that has just a few inches of water in it.
@MommaLaw Our Scottie looked like that where he tried to swim... it was funny and I always assumed it was the weight of all the hair... legs that are too short makes more sense... He couldn't swim but was an amazing digger...
Please keep in mind...(all scotty lovers)...a scotty's legs are too short to support their body weight ....they have no fear of water and if you encourage them to swim..pleasssseeeeee...keep an eye on them for they will easily drown!!!
Can't you see how this Scottie is struggling to keep her head above water? She is panicking! The only thing out of the water is her head. Also notice the instant cough trying to get the water out of her lungs. This is cruelty to the dog. Scotties do not and can not swim! Bodies are to long, coats to heavy, legs to short!
You are the 1 panicing. They don't actually force the dog to swim, it does it herself, and that isn't so deep water that she could drown just like that, without people to save her. So, maybe you should calm down? And when you swim, is there something else than your head above the water than your head? I know scotties aren't good swimmers, but if dog wants to swim, why shouldn't he/she do it, if the owners watch that the dog isnt drowning? sry for the bad english :P
You need to watch the video again. The people are pointing the dog towards the water & someone is in the water coaxing it to come toward the video camera. This is not a dog wanting to swim on it's own. This is a dog being enticed to get in and it is clear the dog is not going in on it's own because it likes to swim. The dog gets out of the water coughing and the man turns it around and puts it back over to go in again. Where is it that this dog is voluntarily wanting to swim?
Okay pittypaws1, if the dog didn't want to go in the water it wouldn't have, if (once it was in the water swimming) it decided it wanted to go back to shore sooner it would have, no one forced it to swim.
People there to help save it. Do they even know how to do CPR on an animal? Have you? It is not the same a CPR on a human. Then what are they going to do stand there looking at each other watching the dog die of water inhalation and say well we got a great video of our dogs last moments alive.
It is really clear you don't understand the severity of their actions enticing this breed of dog to swim when it is clear the dog is not making any attempt of going in the water by it's self without being coaxed. Some Scotties do not mind wading in shallow water up to their tummies, but you will not see them go deep enough to swim.
I think the dog swims because it's owner asks it to come to him and come to the water. But he doesn't force, I mean like throwing her to the water or something... After all dog makes the choice. And I think the owner knows that scotties aren't that good at swimming. He is on the water with the dog! So, what is the possibility that the dog would drown? or even swim away from the beach? I think the owner wasn't gonna let that happen, just gave the dog change to swim. This is my opinion.
Yup, you are right! It was okay, (just about), as the water wasn't too deep. If she'd have swam out just that bit further, she'd have been in trouble. Scotties bodies are too long and heavy, for their legs to keep them up in deep water. They tell you this in books about Scotties. It is obvious really too, isn't it?!!
scotties are NOT supposed to swim........their legs are too short and body too dense so you should NEVER force them into the water cuz they can easily drown......this video clearly shows how hard it was for the scottie to swim.....
maudkramer is right. Their legs are too short and they sink like stones. One little scotty at our dog park drowned but was given cpr and revived. He got fatigued and couldn't swim anymore. I keep a life vest on mine or a sea dogg floating collar. I will never let my scotty without either one if there's water for swimming. it only takes a second for them to drown like the one I witnessed.
How cute Looks like she's enjoying it. My Scotty, swims just fine although I read an article yesterday that mentioned about 6 breeds that cannot swim. The Scottish Terrier was one of them. I told my Scotty, this just as he jumped in to retrieve a toy. Watch my video of him. I don't let mine swim without supervision as well. Even my Airedale
HAHAHA REALLY?!?! Someone has to rewrite their facts cos my Scottish Terrier swims like an athlete....well...sort of, he isnt the fastest swimmer but his heart is there! he isnt fantastic with fetching stuff though, he tends to have is mouth low in the water so when retrieving a stick he tends to inhale water sending him into a coughing fit when on land....now we just throw stones in the water and let him chase the splash!
Scotties usually sink like stones. A life jacket for dogs would be a good investment. I've known of two Scotties who have drowned. All of mine are afraid of the water.
My Max loves to swim. He's a fanatic about it and I don't think he'd ever drown, but that is not to say that we would ever leave him alone by the pool because you never know. Check out my videos!
how strange, my scottie doesnt get clipped so he has long scruffy hair, he too doesnt tend to walk in puddles, but when it comes to swimming there is no stopping the little nutcase!

Uhm yeah, friggin' dumb ass...
Adult Scotties can't stay afloat for long (usually) since they're top-heavy.
You try doggie peddling with half your extremities...
Pups under the age of 2 can somtimes keep their heads above water, but after that:
if you wanna drown your Scottie, send ' em swimming....
