I loved making shrunken apple heads when I was a kid. We had apple trees and always had too many apples so I would peel one and carve a face in it. I didn't dip mine to keep it from browning. I liked the effect it gave to sun dry to a leathery wrinkled brown like sun-weathered skin.
@cattaraugus41 Oh man, I still have one of those Vincent Price Shrunken Head makers! I remember getting it one christmas around 30 years ago and thought it was the neatest thing ever. I don't think it will work now since there are only compact flourescent bulbs available.
You can make shrunken heads without the kit - and you can still buy them on eBay for hardly nothing...you're basically buying just the box anyhow...
