first and still best version of this song, soo will fav it.. I won't go on about people that lost homes that they had no business owning in the first place.... Liars loans anyone?? As to the current economy, somebody is always going to be in that 10 to 15% that gets burned in a bad recession..
The video as this rendition of this beautiful song played, tore my heart out. The Bush years and the virtual obliteration of any oversight or protective financial controls or protections has ravaged this country. Thanks for posting this just as you have.
This arrangment was the way that Burt wrote and directed it. And in my opinion he is still, and ever will be, the KING of contemporary music. It is a story of a very sad soul, not angry but distought. I thought this version most exemplifies the true meaning of his thoughts.
This is the original version and the one that put the song on the map. Dionne Warwick was one of the biggest selling female artists of the 60's although you wouldn't know it by Youtube. Maybe it's partly because she was never the nicest person in the world, I don't know.
Atolm and saffyre915, how can you insinuate that Dusty and Luther's versions are better than Dionne's. I was a teenager in the 60s and while most kids that age were listening to the Beatles, "A House is Not a Home" came out. It was one of the most beautiful songs we had heard. She owns this song. It is sung with such passion and feeling that one can imagine her sitting in an empty room, broken hearted, hoping that her husband returns. I get teary-eyed every time I hear her sing this song.
luther vandross arrangement of music and his vocal skills is porvailing ver Dionne warwicks... eventhigh she sounds beutiful singing this but she has more of a las vegas in the elevator going to your room type deal... put i guess to each its own
@atolm1 Dusty's live version has a lot going for it, but it has a lot of mistakes and way too much reverb. I'd really like to hear a studio version of her doing it.
Very inventive, giving a forgotten song very new meaning with a telling video. Who sang it better is hardly the point. Sad that billions of dollars have gone to restore the health of speculating lenders, not the 10,000 people PER WEEK who lost their homes to foreclosure for over a year. Support reinstating regulations! Neither political party is apt to care enough to do what's needed. Google Glass-Seagall!
Hey, I feel bad because your video mad me laugh when that house turned into a tenet. I hope the people didn't really lose their home but you have to admit when you are sitting here listening to the song and you see a house turn into a tent.
Did you know this was a Bossa Nova song? Burt was the US bossa king, it's the same fantastic beat in so many of Dionne's songs & the same with Petula Clark!
Thanks to charlie, I've added this to my 1964 playlist. My 450 playlists feature over 300 artists and a list for every year since 1900.
You can take a trip back in time to the sounds of any past year..............
@MrTre5670 Hey, I respect your opinion but let me tell you why I like her version. I like the fact that she sings the song and doesn't milk it like a lot of preformers. You can sing with her and you don't get the feeling it's gonna turn into a solo or that the notes will change so you can't sing with her. It's hard to sing with Luther; sure he's good but he wants to sing alone and you can tell.
@MrTre5670 Dionne Warwick is the reference singer for all Bacharach / David songs -- that is why they hire her. She is often underrated, but that is because people don't listen to her. Their songs can often have very complex time signatures and melodies, and frequently her version is the only one that gets it right, and often the only version recorded under their supervision.
There are many versions of this song from others, but this version of it by Dion is the only version I like. Old songs bring back memories, good or bad. I remember this song from my childhood on a bad note. While this song was playing on the radio I got into a heavy argument with my mother, she stormed out the house slaming the door, and I started crying. I was about 8 or 9 years old. But I've always liked this song dispite the bad memory it brings up everytime I hear it. Mom past away 3 yrs ago
Some of the video looks like the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Most all of my wife's family had to go through this. We moved down to the gulf coast of MS. 6 weeks before it hit. We were only renting until we found a house to buy and all of our stuff was in storage back where we lived before. We were lucky. Everyone else was devastated. Most have come through it four years later. Still some suffering, though.
