I used to live in Lismore...which is about 20 minutes from Nimbin.Nimbin is like a town on valium...its always so peaceful there.Most of the problems that occur in Nimbin are caused by the tourists, not the locals.I believe that most of the locals are too stoned to cause any hassles :p The police always try to start riots...try to piss people off so they are given a reason for being there....otherwise what are they gonna do? arrest a few hundred people for smoking pot...i doubt that!

Yes it may be a crime to sell weed, but the penalties for it nowadays are pretty relaxed - even in QLD.The last few people I knew to be caught with weed got a small fine and had to attend a 2 hour seminar...hardly seems like we consider 'weed' to be an issue large enough to be dealt with by the riot squad!There was no reason for the riot squad to be there. The local police would know who is breaking the law and who is not(Nimbin is a tiny town)and are qute capable of laying charges if necessary.

I was there 2 days before Mardi Grass and there were heaps of cops then, just walking around and not really doing much, but they made arrests on the Sat & Sun. I took off on the Sun and went back up on the following Tuesday and the place was awesome and back to normal and cool.
