  • rigan machado o.k.'d paulson to give barnett a black belt so he could compete. Thats what I heard anyway.

  • Josh is a dirty boiiiiiiiii

  • This guys is a juice head!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • He got flipped 3 times holding that omoplata *tight*! LOL how much did he weigh?

  • muito bom

  • Whoa thats awsome some one like that competing in a state tournament it must of been kool for those guys to test them self against a mma star like that!

  • WAAAAHH i can hear the bjj guys crying now say it aint so

  • @disinferno...this happened before he fought in the no gi worlds. I saw him get his black belt with my own eyes specifically for this tournament. i do know who Erik Paulson is and his qualifications. trust me i am happy to have Josh up fighting at Black Belt, but i aint wrong.

  • GOOD JOB BARNETT!!!! CATCH

  • Otavio is super tough. He has been a top 3 finisher at worlds and gives anyone in absolutes a fit. It's fun to watch him fight.

  • i couldnt see from that angle was it a heel hook?

  • Otavio Sousa is such a good Grappler. It's just insane how well he could control him, in spite of the size difference.

  • why is everyone hating barnett?? the guy did (off his back) a break leg attack, with technique after escaping side mount, one would have thought Otavio would have been the one doing that. . .

  • I recently had a chance to meet Otavio Souza...This video doesn't do justice to the size disparity. Obviously he wasn't trying to pin Barnett, but was going for position before submission. Seriously despite his loss I am so much more impressed now knowing how much smaller he is and how well he handled him.

  • When they get up to that level size really doesn't matter. I`m impressed with both of them since Josh never wore a gi before this and Souza fighting a larger man.

  • @AverageAsianMe Size absolutely matters.

  • @918Anon Josh has never worn a gi before this tournament. Its not that hard to control a guy who has no idea what to do while he's wearing a gi.

  • wow, I heard this talked about but the story people were telling was much different. Souza despite being outweighed significantly attacked the arm, swept and pinned Barnett. If it were CACC Souza would have pinned him. lol. Did you see Barnett trying to escape the omo platta. Thank god for steroids!!! I love CACC. I just wish it had better leadership

  • Neither is superrior guys. Ask any high level grappler and they will tell you it comes down to the individual, his abilities and experience. Im not hackin on either one but if you talk to guys like barnett and paulson they train in other grappling arts to improve as individual Martial Artists and train with other talented grapplers not because one style is better. Catch is pretty much a dead term now anyways, it has evolved into Sub wrestling.

  • catch is alive man

  • I was there. Josh hit a knee bar, the guy quit, but they kept the match going. Josh has never worn a gi and still pulled off a submission. For the record...they never declared a winner or loser.

  • he is 250. sousa is like 170

  • I thought Josh only trains Catch. I've never seen him train/fight in a gi. He said in an interview a while ago, that he's never trained a day in his life in Bjj. Who does he have his black belt under?

  • He just kind of declared himself at Black Belt level before the No-Gi Worlds. I don't know if it counts as official, but I did see another qualified Brazilian Black Belt tie one around Josh's waste just before the match.

  • I don't think Josh is trying to declare himself as a blackbelt. He just wants to be able to use his catch skills in bjj tourneys.

  • @FightingMoe WRONG! He won the world championship in BJJ, and thus was given his black belt under Erik Paulson, a Rigan Machado black belt. The rationale was, he beat a bunch of guys who are black belts in bjj, and when he won he waas a bjj world champion, except that he's never done bjj in his life.

  • @titosuave21

he got his black belt from Erik Paulson, which is under the Rigan Machado BJJ association.

  • @titosuave21 hi, josh trains under erik paulson who is a black belt in judo and bjj

  • I train both catch and bjj and bjj has more rules than catch. BJJ is more defensive than offense unless you progress to higher belts. When you get to the higher belts then you can begin to do holds similar to catch. That is the 1st time I saw Josh wear a gi and I can't believe it.

  • its always going to be hard to beat a guy who can bench press you off from any position. josh has been busted again and again for steroids, a blatant cheater.

  • I was at this tournament, Barnett lost the next match, very close though.

  • stand them up!!!!! oh wait...

  • is there any videos of him competing in his actual weight class?

  • I am definitely trying to add the Barral fight. I am just facing some software limitations. Believe me I am a jiu-jitsu man through and through but the results are inconclusive. Trust me, I was pulling for Barral but he did not prove anything for BJJ in the fight.

  • "What do the bjj guys say about catch wrestling?" We say it´s not as good as bjj!Jus check it out, he lost to Barral who´s a lot lighter than him!

  • imo, josh uses far from strictly catch, hes been training with bjj guys for probably 15 years even if he never wore a gi.Erik paulson is a machado black belt and his sometime coach so what he uses is a mixture of bjj and catch.

  • Yea bro, u right!Nowadays evrbd trains bjj. When I said "What do the bjj guys say about catch wrestling?", I was ansewring to a fella!Although even with a mix of bjj n catch I´d say he coudn´t do with a heavier one like Roger Gracie, Xande Ribeiro r Braulio Estima.

  • Catch Wrestling is great but i'm disappointed in Souza tapping... Put the Barral fight for the love of God!

  • I couldn't tell what the leg lock was. Was it a heelhook? If he didn't tap to a heelhook by someone so much heavier, would have been huge damage, no?

  • A heelhook would inflict plenty of damage indeed... I don't want the guy to get a limb torn off, but gettting tapped was disappointing never-the-less.... sweep was awesome, but not finishing him from sidemount...

  • Very nice...but Barnett is also so much heavier than Otavio sousa ...like 80 pounds i think...

  • more josh barnett matches please. It's cool to see josh in bjj matches against bjj guys. What do the bjj guys say about catch wrestling?

  • @funkybjorn11 I believe his Catch wrestling skill translates well to competition because how closely related CACC and BJJ are. I mean, Mitsuyo Maeda actually did train with Catch Wrestlers and fought in carnival matches as well too. On a side note, for my 2nd MMA fight, I am walking with a catch shirt on. I'm a BJJ blue belt - 3 years.

  • blacksonblacks??? what kind of site is that? haha

  • otavio sousa is his name another world champ

  • Thanks for posting. Do you have any more of Barnett at the tournament?

  • @blacksonblacks I do. I am trying to find a way to upload it as its over 10 minutes and I cant split it with the software I have. I do believe it should be seen though. .

  • @FightingMoe Not fair to think any less of BJJ or Otavio Souza based on his performance against Josh Barnett. It's not the brand of martial art alone, but the individual hard work, that determines how good you are. Barnett is easily one of top 10 Pro MMA heavyweights in the world today and a veteran of PRIDE FC. He's even notched a victory over BJJ legend Antonio Nogueira in no-hold barred. Josh is a BEAST!
