Why hasn't this gorgeous voice been heard more? He's not just good, but really exceptional. The beauty of tone, technique, and interpretation are flawless.
Wonderful! It was great to have him as Rigoletto at Cincinnati Opera as well. He was a great Rigoletto. Steeped in the tradition of the great old singers who knew what they were doing!!
I think this is one of the all time most extraordinary love songs -- and completely underrated! I frequently perform it in my "Trivial Broadway" show (though I am a woman) and I always sing it in my "History of Broadway" classes. Mr. Powell has a remarkably beautiful voice.
beautiful voice. new singer to me. found by accident. great orchestration. he has great clear speech. he enunciates each word. i think this is great. any more performances by stephen powell he is great!!!!!!******rated 11+ ROGHARM
I know this song from the play, I'm a big Lerner and Loewe fan. The musical Brigadoon really is a romantic fantasy about love. But, what I don't understand is how Christian organizations like this find this as a song of faith when it clearly is a love ballad? Could someone explain this to me?
@SaverinoMusic Because this is how people with faith feel about God - we see people without faith and without God, and we feel for them, and we know that there but for God go we :)
This was fantastic. It was not over-sung (as is common with professional opera singers- Sometimes, one cannot hear the pitch for the vibrato....). What a gorgeous piece... This truly made my day.
Who the hell is this guy?? He's great!!!! Where has he been??!! Why can't fellows like this be celebrated instead of the untrained wannabes on Broadway?? Please post more of this man!
@AindriasHiort Isn't it the truth! I'm often disgusted that the really good singers like this aren't well known, and talentless people with savvy agents are getting all the glory. Mr. Powell is primarily an opera and concert singer, but he does crossovder materil like this very, very well. He's simply brilliant.
I saw you in Grapes at Carnegie. You were wonderful. My friend in the cast told me you were looking at starting to do things like Rigoletto and other such roles. I look forward to hearing more of you. This was beautiful!
Mr.Powell is among the better baritones I've ever seen. That song "There but for you go"
is another masterpiece from Lerner and Loewe. "Brigadoon" was an unforgettable movie... And The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the best of the world. Just that.
Actually, I began thinking his name sounded familiar, so I checked San Diego Opera's website archives and discovered that I'd heard him twice there; as MacAllister in Cold Sassy Tree 2001 and as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly in 2003.
@redhead529 I, like you, heard Powell in San Diego in these roles. We really need to tell Ian Campbell to have Mr. Powell sing in San Diego again. What an incredibly beautiful voice...as you say, "flawless."
Majestic and gorgous! Brilliantly performed. I have sung this song before and know what a challenge it is to sing. Mr. Powell, my compliments. Bravo!
My wife and I had the privilege to hang out with Stephen, his wife and some friends after a performance in Arizona in which I played a comprimario role to his Germont. He is the nicest guy you could ever meet and very classy. You are definitely one of my fave baritones of all time Mr. Powell. Why you are not a household name is beyond me. And I agree with all of the other people here...we need more of your videos on Youtube. It's a crime that there are so few!
To say I am stunned is an understatement. Hands down the absolute BEST version of this song I have ever heard. What an incredibly amazing voice !!! BRAVO !!!
I only recently discovered this song, and this is certainly the best rendition I have heard of it. Truly a lovely dynamic performance. I especially liked the little punch on the final "GO". Added some great intensity. Really really beautiful
Orley, I'll definitely look you up, as we are going to visit Mr. G during our stay. Perhaps we can even meet together, I'm sure Mr. G would like to see you also. We'll be in touch. Thanks for getting back to me! Have a great summer.
stephen, I live in the same town as Mr norman G. I would be delighted to see you .Keep using those great gifts that God has given you. Very few ever achieve your level of excellence.
Bravo my wonderful friend. You are just as extraordinary on the piano as you are with that exceptional voice.I remember well those studio lessons and the times you would sing with me and my friends at the special events of my university. All of us are so very proud of you. God bless.
Orley, how wonderful to hear from you! I hope you and your loved ones are doing well. My family and I are doing extremely well. We'd love to get back in touch with you, and we're coming to Chicago in September, so please let me know how to contact you. And thanks for your kind words!
Mr. Powell is our Giorgio Germont in "La Traviata" here in New Orleans next week -- April 17 & April 19. I have every reason to attend the performances after hearing this superb singer.
An extraordinary performance! I wish I'd heard this singer before. Fantastic voice.
