Strange editing, Joel. But at least "Moments" is fully intact. My God what a song!!! I never got "Beyond Here Be Dragons", so this video is the only way I get to hear this song. I love it so much. The emotional journey to happiness and peace, written and expressed as only the master can do it.
no other artist has ever been able to bring me to the point of absolute introspection like shawn phillips. His music also been an inspiration to my 6 kids, all musically inclined, all 2nd generation fans. I took 5 of them to his house near Austin 10 years ago and he is as nice and down to earth as his music.
Thanks, Shawn, for being an oasis in an otherwise differently motivated industry.
@richm57 I feel so much the same, except that none of my family has ever gotten so attuned to Shawn as me, and I can't sing nor play an instrument, so I count on Shawn's music as my oasis.
I have written a book ("Fun and Consciousness") that includes 49 of Shawn's songs, and just today he emailed me asking me to please send it to him for review, etc. Gawd, it's hard to tell anyone how much this means to me - it could and should be HUGE! ... but I'll bet you understand pretty damn well.
Shawn Phillips is truly amazing in his powerful deliverance of his music. His lyrical prowess is unbending and I had the opertunity to see him in concert on May 4th here in mpls, mn at the Guthrie theater, wow, he still has it after all these years. Get to see him again in July in St Cloud on the 30th. His DVD from the 2008 reunion concert held at the MN Zoo titled "Living Collaboration" is out, its a DVD of wonderment and awesomeness, go purchase it, you'll be very pleased indeed.........
More rare footage from this Shawn Phillips 1988 concert is coming soon- just one angle, but differnt material tell your friends and thank you for watching joelsamuelpresents on YouTube!
Joel, I cant thank you enough for bringing these fantastic vids to our attention so that we too may enjoy the wonderment and awe that this man inspires in all those who watch Shawn and enjoy his music.
I have the rest of this concert on my channel and on my other channel called bscactus- if you like shawn phillips come by and say hello and welcome to my show!
My God! I was telling my kids about Shawn, and how much I loved him, and how he could play just about every instrument that there was, and my 15 yr old came to the computer and pulled up Youtube and typed in his name, and Bam! there he was just the way I remember, but with short hair! I had no idea he was still doing tours and/or producing albulms.
The reports of his "death" were from stories of when he causght his hair on a boat motor in Italy and had to have it severely cut...and the Lament for the Dead Child on his LP (Transcendence?). But he is ALIVE...so many other of our generation's best and brightest are gone...
Wow......for some reason I thought he passed many years ago, glad to find out I was wrong! Wonder why I've not heard a thing about his playing or recording, for at least the last 25 years... I loved him when I was first turned on to him, in the early 70s....
Amazing man, amazing voice, amazing talent...brings back such rich memories of sitting in forest glades with our first acoustic guitars...Is his whole catalogue available on CD? And is he touring in 08?
Thanks--could you send me the link to his website please? I'm in Northern Virginia Two of my best friemds with whom I sang and wrote were ecstatic to get the YouTube clip--one is in California, one's in Colorado...so we feel tied together when we hear Shawn Phillips.
Today I am the Artistic Director of Opera Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, and I love rock.
In 1970 I saw my first recital with Shawn Phillips at the Auditorium of the McGill University in Montreal and I went literaly CRAZZZZZZZZZZZY for his performance, voice, repertoire and personality.
I have all his records (now CDs) and treasure them until today.
When I introduce his art to my Brazilian friends they go wild - same as me...
First of all, thank you Joel... but most of all, thank you Shawn.
To Shawn.... have you ever thought of performing in Prince Edward Island, Canada ? It's beautiful.
Anyways, this man is the most incredible songwriter I have ever heard, every word is perfectly placed, and each one is filled with emotion. I am so happy that I was told of this modern day minstrel in the early 70's, for without his music I wouldn't have reached into my own soul.
Okay after digitizing and transferring this to my computer then uploading there was a tiny glitch or what can be called a double upload which last very briefly, but I am sure if you enjoy his music, it won't matter that much- also why is it that volume needs to be boosted when I upload my file is right on?

I have been listening to Shawn since the 70's and still do. His control of the English language amazes me to this day. Love you Shawn! Carla Pack
