The Shomen-uchi strike, from my understanding, is representing a sword-edge. Aikido was originally made to defend against Katana empty-handed. The strike is silly but it's the theroy behind it that is usable.
Nice to see how you keep your own elbows down to not give him the opportunity to counterattack. Excellent demonstration, I learned a lot! Greetings from Germany!
It is good to see another Aikidoka working on Marital Aikido.Too many schools are becoming powder puff girls.I do see elements of Take Sensei's Tesabaki, and JKD's guntings.Very similar to my own background.Keep it up!
Have you trained in any filipino martial arts at all, sensei? Several of your defenses against these types of attacks begin with a method called 'gunting' in FMA.
Aikido for me is the greatest kid of martial arts ever. It's because most aikido techniques deals with countering an attack. So taekwondo, karate, kickboxing, boxing have no chance against aikido.
@neilalbertclosa y are right… aikido can be supreme in grabing and counter techniques against those arts, but remember that it's never good to talk and compare martial arts to which one is better… there is no better martial art, martial arts techniques, and styles are just like different types of weapons :)
really nice. one of my favorite things about aikido is its flexibility: from O Sensei's art has come many different 'flavors' of aikido. traditional aikido, so long as it is recognized as such, is not threatened by variants or even hybrids -- like ushiro sensei with karate or lara sensei with boxing and 21st century attacks. imho. anyway, really great vid. thank you!
good point mate, iv been practicing for lil over 7 years now and i tell everybody the exact same things, nobody attacks like that, and yes they might be very powerful if you conect with a strike like shomenuchi but honestly u have a point dudde. it might be great to practice in the dojo but once things get real aikido techniques are second plan, what you learn from practice is wats going to get u thru it.
Ei Lara sensei im also practicing aikido pretty cool video im just a purple belt in aikido so im not really that good.was wondering if you have videos for kicks(Roundhouse) and anti jiujitsu moves? thx
will i learn things like this in my aikido class...I've been doing it for a little over a month and have learned like defense against straight punch or hook punch but only 1 technique that diesn't always work....how long will it tke before i learn (learn, not master) these things...or at least an estimate...thank you!
well my man, i wanna commend you. Because in this day in age, most martial arts are becoming more and more INpractical. Because there made around attackers who only do martial arts strikes..when in the reality of this current time, all street attackers will attack with Boxing-like attacks.
So ur doing some good things here (this is comming from me, an extremely gifted martial artist, and BOXER).. So thumbs up to you...and i wanna see more vids of this nature (and more in detail if possible)
I don't just do Aikido. I do sword arts as as well. And it was a gift from my Sensei. There is no main reason other then it was a gift and I wanted to use it. A ton of people think only O'Sensei wore a white hakama. Not true. Only in his later years did he have one on most of the time. Many arts use many colors of Hakama. As well as Dogi. I know many other Aikido teachers who have grey Hakama, Blue, Black and and few others with white. It just depends on teachers.
I like your video on making aikido a little more practical.. I've been taking aikido for 8 months and I feel that the techniques I have learned havn't really made me confident in using them to defend myself. They don't feel realistic but I'm sure they should work. How can i make the technique more practical other than the advice from ur video?
I cannot speak for Robert Lara Sensei but you may discover later on as you train, like I have, that you will suddenly see 'openings' where you can apply the aikido principles that you developed in training from any attack. Just watching this video is a perfect example of that.
I like your approach to applying Aikido against common realistic forces, and the fact that you explain that you're practicing and playing with things in a safe environment that may come up in a much more dynamic way.
You're the type of teacher that I love studying with.
I train in Sanuces Ryu-JiuJitsu created by Dr. Moses Powell and I want to thank you and was very pleased to hear you say that before going into a wrist lock or any other "fancy move" it is imperative that you shock the person or strike him in order to loosen him up. As you know, but many others are in denial about, there is no way in hell you're going to grab a guy and just start applying kote gaish, sonkyu, or gokiyu. This is not the movies and a real attacker is not the same as an uke. Thanks
Great video Sensei, I admire your humble approach and that your not scared to add to aikido. There's people demonstrating self defense techniques on youtube, that are way too vague or over confident in their ability to stop a violent attacker. Too much is said about how a move is to be performed and or how well it works, but basically nothing is mentioned when it comes to things like Awareness & the size and strength of your opponent, Distance, Timing, Implications or Outcome...Peace
Thank you for your videos sir. I am thrilled to find aikido instruction which attempts to deal with the assumption of a trained and skilled opponent, as you can always work down from there eh? I have been fascinated with aikido for a long time, but unfortunately I just cant afford a 100+ a month for the training right now. Not to train since my move has been the biggest sacrifise Ive made i think... *sigh* ah well. Hope you are well sir, and again, my gratitude.
your aikido gives me a different out look on the art. I honestly didn't like it. Because everything alway starts with Grab My Wrist or grab the shirt.
Man I love that sentence and it's great to see a master who acknowledges the importance of knowing strikes and kicks to improve on ones aikido. Great work on all of your vids!
I can understand why. I also study those systems because they are Internal like Aikido is. And I feel that it helps me to study other forms to gain Ki.
Excellent application of Aikido. I've been training on boxing and jujitsu and I can tell these points are definitely effective, *especially* the tapping strikes. Thumbs up and thanks for the vids!
very true, I like your street application of aikido and how you said many schools dont teach much about strikes such as punches or kicks so thank you so much for posting these videos^_^
Definitely some of the better theory out there. Mind going over what exactly you did at 45 seconds there? Looks interesting. and at 31 seconds in, I assume that was just a basic irimi?
What is your style called? Is there one in the NY/NJ area? Damn you are putting half the schools out there to shame. Our highest sensei tries to teach this but all the senseis under him are stuck in their ways, its really hopeless. Soon O-sensei will die then what? I am going to watch all your videos, thanks. SUBSCRIBED.
Well I just teach Aikido with the Idea of it being a martial art first. I dont have any schools in the NY/NJ area. I am a independent Aikido teacher at this point. Thank you for your kind comments and Please feel free to ask any questions that may come up. Peace, Robert Lara Sensei
Thanks a lot. About time someone addressed this problem. We really need to adapt Aikido and make it as 'street effective' as possible. Aikido needs to flow like water and evolve. Flowing water never grow stale.
Really nice video, I am a shodan and have also practised boxing, In aikido we really need to include more reallistic attacks as these, and counters against low thai style kicks. It would be nice also to make the art more understable to our way of thinking, as most of the japanese sensei, still teach to westeners with "oriental" methodologies and ritualistic attacks, which is fine but new things should be included in order to fullfill O-Sensei´s dream of worldwide practicing of the art.
I like Sensei that put on the mat also real strikes. We practice once in a while jabs at our dojo. What people, and I found it personally very hard, will find out is that timing has a completely different prospective. Even the simple irimi to follow a jab becomes a hard job to do.
Thank you for your input. I think we must be able to strike as well as be able to handle a striker. You must control the first move in order to gain control of his attack before it starts. even if that means hitting him. Many years of good training to you.
I applaud your Aikido! I am glad someone out here is showing and explaining it in a way that the western culture can appreciate. See it for the martial art it is. It isn't my personal art, but I find it's finesse and control an inspiring ambition.
Thank you for your comments and view. I try my best to share Aikido in a clear and easy way to understand. Again thank you for your kind words. Have a great day!

Nice, this is more the line of our training as well... Ateme is very important..why wrestle with someoen ot apply a wrist lock...hit first then do the wristlock when the opponent is no longer focused on resisting the wrist technique...
