Good chords Jason. I love that song. I would have had an easier time following you though if the chords were described in terms of the chord name and deducing where the notes fit into it rather than working the other way. For eg. If c#,f,g, and a# (sorry, no flat symbol) were described as an a chord it would be easy to figure the flat 9, raised 5 and 6 than guessing what chord it is. That's prob just me though.

This is not anywhere near a negro spiritual. Its a gospel song written by Andre Crouch that has made it as a standard in the Black church though. Its a classic thats all I can say, but not semi negro spiritual.

Look for 'worship' music, there a lot of jazz principles being used. Be warned though,this guy got the feel. Some try to do it without and it can sound pretty awful. Some songs have a structure that lends itself to this kinda embellishment, some don't. Secular comparisons - look at bands playing live, everyone from EWF and Toto to Justin Timberlake or Alicia Keys

Dude, u should try get out of playing only in C major.. it helps you expand your playing... and the interesting thing not every chord has the same sound and effect when played in C.... just a little heads up... lol

I'm a shorter person myself, and my hands are small so I'm not able to do some of the stretching that some of the lessons require. The ability to play piano was given to me as a gift from God and as a result some of the things I learn here I can only apply with the reach that I have, and amazingly, I still get the same or similar sound! Love it. Very rich voicings. However, do you not find people complaining about these kind of arrangements for congregational singing. Many like to improvise themselves and sing harmonies and i often found that they couldn't find suitable harmonies if i played this way in church

it s really important that you get to know the keys and the scales, it really helps. i can read music but i have been playing some by ear, im training my ear, believe me it really helps to know what key is what, its so easy to build a chord

you can actually do it yourself pretty easily - for example, check the first chord out. The tonic is D, and since we know there is no F#, we know the chord will be minor, just tabulate the D minor scale out and skip every other note until we approach the highest in the progression (in this case G), and we find that G is an 11th above the tonic so the chord is Dm11. Just do this for all the other ones. (and remember, Dm11 implies that you play the 1-3-5-7-9 and 11, not just the tonic and 11.
