I have to say that out of the three, I consider Yamato III to the best series. While I have respect towards the first series for starting it all, all the second series did was repeat so much of the first series they became clichés, and Yamato III enjoys the benefit if actually avoiding most of them. Earth not being under invasion! No one performs a stupid sacrifice!
actually americans changed more than the name they redid the concept of the crew too instead of being about the ship the show is about the crew. It works very well and the theme song was drastically improved.
I know what you mean Ironb. My favorite was Galaxy Express 999. Because of that blonde chick who appears nude or semi nude frequently. She looks definitely American. The boy who follows her looks totally Oriental. Check it out.
I don't think Japanese people like to animate themselves. Why do I say that? Just look at the whole crew Yamato 3; their all European decent. I didn't see one Japanese looking person. It's the same with many other anamie. Only certain cartoons will have a true Japanese character for the lead role. For example Mazinger Z. Maybe they think they don't look good.
there are actually real and good reasons for this "european look" to anime characters, especially in thier early days. one was a huge influence of western culture, Disney being one of them in fact. another is more rooted to the characters' eyes, bigger eyes equal things like more innocense and such, also it made animating expressions alot easier for fans to "feel" what the character is feeling. narrow eyes with small pupils often mean a character is evil (modern anime greys this area now).
It's not censorship (that would be cutting people getting shot to death) that changed the name, but localization. "Yamato" has no resonance to Americans, "Argo" has some, being related to an epic voyage.
Agreed. But there were still a lot of bad feelings towards Japan in this country in the 70's and 80's because of the war. And the Yamato *was* used to fight against American troops before it was sunk.
How would Japanese people feel if an American show about the Enola Gay was broadcast over there? It would go over like a lead balloon, just like Yamato here.
@royalpain88 When the series was produced, the producer instructed the english translation to be "Space Cruiser Yamato" because of his boat, despite the actual translation being "Space Battleship Yamato".
@royalpain88 Nishizaki, its creator along with Matsumoto, asked for it to be translated that way, in love of his personal boat that he considered a cruiser.
Everyone whoever sat in the captain's chair in the show died. Okita(Avatar) was the first, the captain yamanami( from be forever yamato) died next, maybe it was out of superstion
This anime is called "Space battleship YAMATO" originally created by Reiji Matsumoto, a Japanese animator. Yamato was taken from a real battleship that existed and built in WWII to fight with America. No wonder why American changed the original title to the weird name, "Starblazers".
Every nation does that, not just USA. "Yamato" wasn't even imported to much of Asia sooner. No natinal wants any particular perspective or sentiment of other nationals. History books must exist as many as the number of nations or tribes. The whole facts must be revealed and reminded regarding history.
@mrbird00 #Leiji Matsumoto and Actually the Main Creator of this is "Yoshinobu Nishazaki" Matsumoto Just sorta put his Ingredients into the show Which Is Probably where it got its imagination and Originality.

I couldn't agree with you more!!! There's a reason why these were called "The Lost Episodes". They should have been lost and never found!!! I'm also sick of the anchor on the side of the Yamato. What is the purpose of that??? This series sucked!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Wow!!! Ain't nothing like talking to a genius like you. Eventhough, there was not one scene during that series when the Yamato was docked in the water, I just think that it didn't make sense to put that stupid anchor on the Yamato. The other 2 series, I could understand because they showed the Yamato in the water. Yet, there was no stupid anchor on the Yamato. The bottom line is that this series sucked!!! Nevermind the stupid anchor you dope!!!
The sister ship is named the Yamato (destroyed when an advanced virus caused enough computer malfunctions that the ship breached its own warp core), but Star Trek: TNG producers have responded that it was not named after Space Battleship Yamato, sadly..
I'm sure It was named after the WWII japanese battleship Yamato that was sunked by the allies. The Yamato in the cartoon is supposed to be the real battleship who's remains are found by the Star Blazers kids and turned into the spaceship you see in the cartoon. Im sure Star Trek named it after the WWII ship, as Star Trek has always named its vessels after naval ships of many countries, not just US.
actually, the insistence on "Space Cruiser Yamato" instead of the accurate Space Battleship is because Nishizaki is a devoted sailing afficionado and wanted his personal yacht included in the title. If I am lying about this, I am dying. Check it out.
space cruiser? who translated this? everyone who knows how to read or understand japanese knows that it's "SPACE BATLESHIP YAMATO" not "SPACE CRUISER YAMATO".
The third season was in syndication to limited cities in the US in 1985. That's why on DVD and VHS they use the 2nd Season opening and ending for this.
The second season opening is seen only on the VHS format or aired on TV,my friend. On the DVD version, the original Yamato 3 opening and closing is used.Trust me.
This opening was passed here in Brazil in 1984, just like this one (original japanese version). Good times...

Essa abertura passou aqui no Brasil na versão original em japonês. Isso ocorreu nas tardes de 1984, na extinta TV Manchete, no programa Clube da Criança, quando a Xuxa ainda estreava como apresentadora de tv. Lembro- me bem do fundo vermelho da galáxia, e do grande Sol vermelho. Aquilo marcou a minha memória daqueles tempos de criança. Adorei rever a abertura novamente!
No. They went back in telemovie Yamato - The New Voyage. Maybe in old animes was not common change themes. In Gundam Seed, for comparison, the theme changes 4 times in 50 episodes (demarcating each phase of history).

However, why will the title be a cruiser?
darkwhisper007 3 years ago
From what I understand- uchuu senkan
Yamato- loosly translates as space cruiser Yamato, because the producer thought Cruiser sounded better than Battleship.
AquilaMagna 2 years ago
I see.
"Senkan" means a battleship in Japanese, but a cruiser seems to be preferable for a syllable.

battleship means 戦艦

I think the chap who made it had a boat/yacht called a cruiser (not a real military one) and that is how he insisted it was translated.
But I might be wrong.
