I think you are mistaking ancient mythology for reality. It is interesting however that Maori people have by enlarge dropped their traditional beliefs in favour of belief in a angry magic man from the middle east.
If the Japanese had bowled up to the Bay of Islands circa 1800 I'm sure the Maoris would've swapped Tangaroa for Shinto. It's all about razzle-dazzle.
