  • As for invective, that often says a lot about a person's grasp of the English language.

  • Note that I made no comment as to the quality of the recording or performance, both of which are excellent, I also did not compare the live version to the original. I do stand by my original comment. If I want to hear the album version of a song which, in my opinion, may or may not be the better version, I will listen to the album. If I go to see Bowie live I want something more than a living juke box. I believe Bowies intent was to entertain. Bring back real reading and real understanding.

  • As for being a dickwad:

artist - a person who produces works of art, especially painting; (or) a person who does something with exceptional skill (or) a professional entertainer.

artiste - a professional entertainer. (The Oxford English Dictionary 1995 paperback edition).

  • Killerbill could not have said it any better

  • If you expect a live version to sound the same as the album version then what is the point of live performances? An amazing song from a brilliant album by one of the best singer/songwriters to have ever "made it". Forget your X-Factor and Britain's Not Got Talent, bring back real artistes.

  • @KillerBill1953 Fuck off Killer billy & elblowto. He's entitled to his opinion you dick wads.Your assuming what his expectation are, besides it's all subjective ! Bring back real ARTISTS and proper spelling.

  • Where can I get this track?

  • Thanks for uploading this. Great to hear a different version from the studio one on Hunky Dory, each of which has its different charms.

  • I have listened to David Bowie all my life and i have never heard this track?

  • @hutchieboy5 Recommend the second side of "Hunky Dory".....all of it is great, but this one is the sleeper.

  • fucking incredible....I almost cried, and I never cry

  • This song is the highlight of the whole Hunky Dory album. This and "Quicksand".

  • @mariofarecraft2 Crazy to think how this is a highlight of an album full of songs that is filled with amazing songs. :P

  • Nicely done live! Impressive.

  • Bowie'

s voice was indeed stronger on the original album.............perhaps like life we wear out. Fantastic nonetheless.

  • @diamonddogize But his voice is GREAT here, as always !! It doesn't sound worn out?? Not even a little bit?

  • i wanna download this album again in downloadmusic .im

  • who are you to judge me?

  • my first homosexual experience was done to the backdrop of this song

  • @mijand Nauseating information. Thanks a lot.

  • is this show available on CD?

  • Absolutely beautifull

  • The Bewlay Brothers and Visions of Johanna. Ethereal genius.

  • Been SEARCHING FOR THIS!!!!! RARE IS RIGHT!!! .. alitteration literally FUN!!! Cameleon Comedian Corinthian and Characture !!! I prolly mixed it up AGAIN !!! LOL!!!! OH HOW I LOVE HIM DOING THIS HERE NOW ... old GOOOOODIE... Wonderful WEb of symbolism, i think he's as good poetically as all the classical poets! Dylan >Bob > it works for more than just you, yes thats great too! :)

  • The Kings of Oblivion, psychedelic vagabonds on the High Street of South England, espied a rectangularly rounded bright orange sign a-hanging aloft the tobacconists' facade advertising pipes, Bewlay Bros. Pipes....it's where they made their mark, took their name, just for the day, as you do, when you're out tripping with yer mate....

  • @h808 is that true? beyond rumour?

  • @h808 Its about Bowie and his institutionalized brother... And yes, you are also correct...

  • Has he really ever done anything wrong? what a great guy and truly talented musician!!!

  • Brilliant...

  • niiiiccee

  • chemelian, comedian, corinthian, caricature

  • I'm glad to see this one posted. David's voice was stronger when he made the album version but the acoustic guitar and organ are well used.

  • There is a self-evident defiant and nostalgic message of strength through it. Terry, his half-brother would often after domestics run away often for days only to live rough in the Kent countryside. Perhaps the lyrics at the end of the song allude to these episodes. It is very There but for the grace of god go I.

  • brilliant!!!!!!

  • brilliant considering it was 30 years since recording the origonal track, a rare treat thanx fr posting

  • I cried when I first heard this song, because it is about his deceased brother. And I could just imagine how hard it was for him, something I don't think he's ever got over. I imagine it would be hard, but it still makes me cry today. I love you David! I hope he does tour again someday, I'd love to see him live!

  • @BOWIEGIRL30 He always said his brother Terry was a kind of ghost like figure in his life. He cares for him deeply but never knew him very well.

If I remember correctly he was in the army when Bowie was young, so their meetings were sporadic, then of course Bowie hit the big time and his brother tragically yielded to schizophrenia.

I don't think I've done anything to ease your pain, have I? That reads as very tragic in itself!!!

  • 1st song i wanted to play

  • Beautiful......nice one Dave

  • Amazing loved u 4 years david

  • my god

  • My favourite song. We need you David Bowie!

  • Happy Birthday David, we need you!

  • Beautiful! brings back so many wonderful memories. I LOVE DAVID BOWIE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @15275657 moi aussi

  • The song drew its name from a pipe called a Bewley Pipe, it was made of clay and smoked...stuff.The night this was recorded David may have part taken of the pipe...it was where the song got it's name..

One of Davids most amazing songs.

Now who was on teh phone at the end of 'life on mars?'. My guess it was Angie...

    ' your dinners ready luvvy'

    Servoboy..

  • @Servoboy or Mick. Jagger not Ronson.

  • @nyusedbooks couldnt have been Mick... he was on tour and Mick Ronson was in the studio - he passed the phone to David and ......I've said to much...LOL... Byee

    London bye ta ta!

  • @Servoboy I said Jagger not Ronson:)

  • phenomenal. most incredible song from the most underrated album.

  • Ye, his sweet brother Terry did commit the act.

I also always thought this was about Terry and David.

    Sad.

    Thanks for this...really.

    Bless,

    Dr.J.J.

    Toronto

  • such a grace in such a masterpiece. unfuckinbelievably confusing and comforting also.

  • this is my favorite David bowie song...

the lyrics r fucking crazy, nonsensical, and utterly perfect

    wish i was there

  • The orginal sounds like he meant it more - whatever it means!!!

  • I agree. whatever that means.

  • Great!

  • Oh, I'm so happy I found this. Thank you so much for sharing it. Awesome performance of this beautiful song by the genious Bowie!

  • It was an awesome concert...my first ever Bowie concert.the one at the Apollo Hammersmith. I was on the balcony..I have some pics and I think a video but not of this song. I met other bowienutters and it was wonderful! The people in line with me for the one off gig had been at the last concert he had performed there which was when he broke up the band at the end of the Spiders From Mars tour...sigh. I do love Bowie immensely and this song was just..interesting and lovely lyrically.

  • Thanks, The first ever public performance of this song- a warm up for Hammersmith. I was there honest (with all the other bowienutters - hi susans) - right in the middle front, long red hair - (which I' ve since cut all off) - I have a few photos, autograph, set list and memory of a hand shake (!)Where is the film of this maida vale session - if anyone out there has it please post it on!

  • Brilliant.

This was a great and weird track that ended Hunky Dory.

What the hell was it about?

  • his brother

  • Yeah, his brother. He died tragically, i think it was a suicide. it was a theme he revisited in Jump They Say.

  • It's not as simple as it sounds to play on guitar! Fav Bowie song!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH.

    You have no idea.

I would like to bow down to you for posting this.

I've looked for "HOURS..." (haha pun) on end to find this live.

Any chance you know where to find a video version? You said in the info it was performed on the Heathen and Reality tours???

  • try to find an audition voio from heathen including that 1

  • Lanari the video of bowie singing this version of bewlay bros was on youtube but i'm afraid it was removed...

  • no!! I'm so sad!

  • This is absolutely amaizing!!!

  • Luv this song!

  • Thanks for uploading this, very nice song! I really like it...

I too prefer the studio version: the 70's sound, the spoken voice overdubbed on top of Bowie's singing (fucking cool effect, almost freaky!), the chorused guitar, the processed vocals at the end, the fact that the original is pitched higher... Everything sounds better. :) Oh, and Bowie's voice, of course - it's not bad here but it was much better 31 years earlier.

  • My favourite Hunky Dory's song. After almost 40 years Bowie still sounds like Bowie. Incredible and sublime!

  • @thefrias This and Life on Mars - definatly

  • anyone know where i can find these lyrics?? i love this song

  • It's fricking easy to find lyrics online, just look up in google... Or, there's a video here with them: watch?v=8a82arE0JSQ

  • Love this song

  • One of the greatest song, my best:)
