It's not about what it can do now, it's about making the technology to get there. :) In order to to higher, we have to go through all the point less stuff first.

Another example, Hybrid cars, it causes more pollution to make one than it ever saves over a non-hybrid card. (That's right, Hybrid cars are worse for the environment than normal cars). But its in the right direction because were developing technology's that will eventually matter.

Furthermore, an athletic human can outrun an athletic horse over long distances.  Horses have a faster top speed, but in a long-distance run, the limiting factor is the ability to intake oxygen. Humans two limbs to run, and can take in more oxygen per body weight per second than any horse. Four-legged animals just can't outrun a healthy human beyond a few miles.
