I don't care this is the song that's going to take me outta here.....This is the song when my life ends I am requesting this song to be played at my funeral Route 101.....I LOVE THIS SONG....
I was 7 y.o. when this tune came out and I'm 36 now. Been in love with this jam ever since! Thank you for posting. My mom grew up listening to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass in the 60s, and I grew up listening to him in the 80s. His careers now spans into the third, if not FOURTH generation!
From the creative genius who established A&M Records along with longtime friend/partner Jerry Moss. Even Miles gave props to this cat!
THIS IS SO AWESOME! This YouTube will have to do until I can find the CD again in some recycle bin. I haven't found the download yet either. It doesn't make sense considering Herb Alpert's huge power and presence in the recording industry.
I lost the original, along with almost 800 other albums and CD's, when I was ripped off by the woman who was closest to me for almost 20 years. YOU WOULD HAVE TO HAVE LOST YOUR SOUL TO TAKE A MAN'S MUSIC COLLECTION AS YOUR OWN…
@rcamp72 You truly have my sympathy-- that's one of the coldest things I've heard. I couldn't do that no matter what he did to me. Can't you find "Definitive Hits" anywhere? Check eB.
Radio Metropole, FM, Port-Au-Prince, Haiti in the 80s...the real-life Dr. Johnny Fever, "T-I-T-O," played the latest pop hits every afternoon, presented in English and his precarious command of the technical aspects of radio engineering which resulted in outbursts of mic feedback that were as much a part of the show as the tunes he played....and this was his theme music. RIP, Tito! Hearing this song after over 20 years just brought you back to life for me!
@WithInsert, I appreciate your post. I do remember T-i-t-o in the mid 80's on radio metropole, every afternoon after school. He had a great vocal, and yes he used to close his show with Herb's song. What a shame that he passed. I have never had a chance to see what he looked like. If you got some pictures or some bio, please share...thanks.
I remember hearing this song frequently during the Summer of 1982 on my local contemporary FM radio station. I fell in love with it immediately! Songs like "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League" (Herb Alpert's A & M label mates) & "Eye Of The Tiger" by Survivor were on the radio around the same time as "Route 101". Heb Alpert's instrumental peaked on both the Billboard pop & adult contemporary chart in September 1982!
I used to hear this song ALL DAMN DAY while working in Winn Dixie stocking Milk and Eggs...FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS SHIT...I am a smooth jazz and Oldie Goldies lover as a result. This guy and others like him paved the way. LOVE THIS DAMN SONG...
Nope---no horses. What I see is the man from WJR (an a.m. radio station in Detroit many years ago) playing "air trumpet" in the commercials. Ohhh....to be young again....
This is my favorite Herb Alpert instrumental (either with The Tijuana Brass or solo)! "Route 101" peaked on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in August 1982! What a great summer for pop music! "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor & "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" by Chicago were also chart singles at this time.
Got this album in the early 80's and have been procrastinating to get it digitized... being hopeful that it would be released on cd. Well! I'm done waiting. I can't imagine why they're holding back from re-releasing this beautiful music.
the best time to listen to all of Mr. Alpert's music is on a rainy lazy Sunday. I mean all day,and to start it off. Have a Beer breakfast .And if the mood strikes just right go tap your honey, she won't mind!
@PathfinderMac When I worked in "Contracted Construction and House Renovation work during the 1970s I used to also Listen to Herb Alpert Superb Melody JAZZ over the Radio, I loved it, and my Job in fast Construction became more Constructive and Enjoyable with Herb Alpert over the Radio FM. Stations of the 1970s!!!!
Riddle's Route 66 theme was my road favorite until Route 101 came along. Both are good tracks to play while filming (from a copter) a Corvette driving through the AZ woods on Old 66 west of Flagstaff or up the Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur. Which leads me to state Bachrach's Pacific Coast Highway is also great.
put the top down on the t bird and lets go cruise up the coast..its a fine saturday afternoon! we'll let the wind blow through our thinning hair and shot at the top of our lungs! man is it great to be alive and have Herb on the cd
Driving down US 101 or California 1 in my convertible...no, I was in a VW Beetle sedan back in 1981 when I heard this song on the radio at the time, on a solo trip from Pennsylvania...what great memories. Thank you for the post!
The only way I learned to like this song was hearing it on The Weather Channel via Local On The 8s. When I first heard it on there, I fell in love wi it.
@talladegajunkie1439 for me it was in the mid 90s when I was in high school watching a rerun of The Price Is Right from 1982 on GSN, and it was used for background music in a showcase
Mi alma se regosija de alegria al escuchar melodias como esta, solo con la música se pueden expresar emociones sin usar palabras GRACIAS HERB ALPERT por tu obra maestra.
This is quite possibly one of my all time favorite songs...it reminds me of cruising down the highway in California on the way to Mexico, or of me going on a fun all girls road trip, or even just of me driving down the street doing errands, (I always pop this in in the car). I just LOVE this song, it's exciting yet relaxing, and I never tire of it!!!!! :)
One of the good memories I have from the Fall of 1982.Unfortunately I was starting High School and getting picked on by bullies. At that time, music ,astronomy and science fiction tv shows were the only things I could retreat to.
I love this man and all he has contributed to music. Of all his songs ,this is both incredibly joyful yet somehow infused with an undeniable melancholy that only a tried genius could create. Brilliantly haunting.
He may not get the recognition as a pure jazz musician, but his music is always fun to listen to. Whipped Cream to 8 Ball there's not one that doesn't leave you feeling better than when you started listening. What more can you ask out of music?
When I was young back in the 80's my Uncle used to take us to the beach and he always put this music whenever we were returning from there..it was so relaxing .. it brings good memories to me!! awesome muscians
@irish89055 None were Hispanic. The TJB was mostly Italian...I think Tonni Kalash (2nd trumpet) was Jewish, too. Guitar, bass, piano, drums...all Italians. Even Julius Wechter (Herb's uncredited marimba player), I'm guessing, was of German descent.
This song makes me feel so good! Growing up with Smooth Jazz, I couldn't have asked for a better childhood <3
