The Hollies by far have really stood the test of time recently downloaded an album of their greatest hits it is excellent. They could also reproduce their sound live very impressive
I compare the Hollies to the Four Seasons in terms instrumental sound and harmonies. If the Four Seasons are called Jersey Boys, the Hollies are called Lancastrian Boys. The Hollies are an English version of the Four Seasons. They are a classic!
This is definitely live, and a tremendous performance, as ever, by one of Britain's greatest bands. Bobby Elliott's drumming never ceases to amaze. Fabulous.
Of course it was the Beatles that came first..Yes.. arguably the Beatles are the greatest band ever ..but you would have to convince me in some other way than basic performance and delivery skills..The Hollies were perhaps the most proficient and the most successful singer/song writters over a greater period of time..This is an example of what kind of musicc they produced a lot of..excellent

Linda Rhonstadt did a brilliant cover of this song,on her album"Mad Love",many years ago(probably late 1970's or early 1980's).If you ever hear her version, you just might agree too.Originals are the best, but some cover versions do equal them.
@AussiePegasus01 The original version of this song was performed by the incomparable Evie Sands. As much as I love the Hollies, Evie puts them in the shade.
Love the live recording of the Hollies; most of which we have from that period is lipsynching.
Love the lead singer dancing the way my big brother danced at our high school dances when he had twenty girls dancing with him, in an oval, he at the head.
Bobby is a very under-rated drummer. His performance here is fantastic, and also check out 'Look Through Any Window 1966' from the same studio session. Just proves that you don't need a 50 piece drum kit - on a revolving plinth - with flashing lights in order to be considered a great drummer.
I feel like somewhere my 28 year old soul was there. Music now days is just so crappy! I miss this sound even though I was never alive then. I mean there are some good singers and bands out there, but no one was auto tuned back in the 60's. It was just straight up rock and you just let it roll!
Always liked this particular song by the Hollies. I guarantee you that you won't hear this on "oldies" radio stations, just their song about along cool woman wearing a black dress.
Larry N. Boyington, aka Larry Neal, former curator of the Wax Museum on the big 1520 KOMA
Really like this song. Great live performance. Hicks is a great lead player and Elliot is another drummer who plays nice loose fills but drops back into a tight backbeat.
another brilliant polished performance by the hollies , seen here on beat club from germany . check out the hollies version of 'just like a woman' from the hollies in concert 1969 , absolutley stunning from the album hollies sing dylan .immaculate .just compare this to the crap cowell pedals on a saturday night to the millions of know nothing dullards, we will never see the likes again
Great group and a great performance. The Hollies had two of the 'best evers', in my opinion; best lead singer/frontman of a group (many good lead singers are not good frontmen, and vice-versa; but Allan had both qualities in abundance; great range and power in his vocals; and just the right amount of alpha male quality that a frontman needs); and one of the best ever drummers in Bobbie - cool, powerful and agile in his playing. Fantastic.
No, I'm not a drummer (flattered though!) Just love Bobby Elliot's drumming, especially the early LP's; it's breath-taking. He's one of the best ever.
But, there is one other drummer who beats them all, in my opinion............
Great Band, what a drummer. Graham Nash has the greatest harmony voice, the 3 at the front just blend. My 60s cover band did this song a few years back, took a while to get it right, esp. the harmonies. Written by Angelina Jolies uncle!
yes we know , you are aware that a lot of groups 'cover' other groups/artists songs , right? the beatles covered chuck berry and the stones , the hollies is a great version......whoever wrote it , right?
I think it would be great seeing Tony, Allen, Bobby, Graham, Terry, and Bernie there at the RRHOF being inducted and perhaps even performing together somehow. Even Eric, but I doubt that will happen since he left pretty early on and with the lawsuits and all..., but....would be cool for fans anyway. I think we'll take what we can get though. I'll be happy to see Tony get in there at least, that's all I know.
You can try and try and you can try, but kids, you'll never make a recording as good as this. What equipment. What a sound. Songwriting like this? it don't exist.........any.....more.
@brianallancobb Music goes through these phases, it's nothing to loose sleep over. Music does what it wants, we are merely its servants. What one man's porridge be simply another's distain. They said the same thing about The Late Quartets of Beethoven and the discussion went on for a century. Probably still is. Things take on a life of their own, and music lives no other way. @brianallancobb Right now I listen to Beethoven and Ives more than this stuff because I got sick of walking around with catchy little hooks and tunes revolving around in my head. All it takes is two seconds of some Brian May radio riff and I am caught on a revolving nightmare of mental brain cycles.
@brianallancobb To me Beethoven's "Kiss To The World" was the concept that music is more beautiful and more powerful than our notes. And that was how many years before John Cage? Around the time he started losing his hearing and the Grosse Fugue was rejected as a part of the 13th Quartet, Beethoven had already rejected heroic cinematic ideas how many years before celluloid was invented? To me, like Doc in Back To The Future: "where we're going, there are no notes!"
Your knowledge of Beethoven is greater than mine. I lost touch after "The Fifth" and the Pathetique.
I know he became deaf as me (who is deaf as a shovel) and according to Mr. Holland's Opus, he used to lay on the floor to hear the vibrations of his music, a scenario I find just too poignant for words.
His later string quartets are supposed to be in outer space, harmonized academically. I have trouble finding them on YouTube, which tend towards his more popular pieces.
@brianallancobb The later quartets are the 13th, 14th, 15th and the 16th. The Grosse Fugue Beethoven wanted attached to the 13th was arranged for Chamber Orchestra because it made so little sense to people of the time, but you can find it as a quartet. Use Google. Simply type in "Beethoven Quartet" and the number you desire and Google will take you right there to info and youtube posts. It is the 20th Century, man!
bobby elliot really does tear it up here; a lot of drummers tightened up their shit after keith moon arrived on the scene. these beat club clips still sound great considering their age. thanx germany! almost all bands on us tv from the 60s are miming, yet most of the stuff from deutsche tv (like this one) is live, wonder why. better equipment?
Agree completely about the Beat Club clips. They are a rock time capsule. In fact, the best video version of Look Through Any Window I've seen is from the Beat Club.
My favorite song by them, did you know that Jon Voight's brother is songwriter Wes Voight who, under the alias Chip Taylor, wrote The Troggs' 1966 smash hit "Wild Thing." His other songs include "Angel of the Morning" (Merrilee Rush), "I Can't Let Go" (The Hollies), etc.
This is from the German show, Beat Beat Beat, but the sound here is way off. An odd echo interference exists here. There is much better audio out there of this footage. They sounded brilliant when they performed on Beat Beat Beat.
Great info! After reading your comment, I searched YT for Evie Sands' version of the song. Awesome performance and a beautiful lady. Thank you for sharing.
Linda Ronstadt did a version of this in the late '70s or early '80s. This is my first time hearing the Hollies' original rendition. Love this!!! Incredible music! :-)
The Hollies had it ALL!! Flawless harmony...This performance and song defines their sound like no other. As good or better LIVE than their recordings...how many bands can boast that?
Bobby Elliot has to be one of the greatest drummers of all time. Amazing.

Beethoven, the original rock-and-roller.
First Movement, Fifth Symphony, the first rock and roll tune. Sui generis.
Love Mahler's Adagietto, don't know much else by him.
I like Ives' contemporaries Samuel Barber, Aaron Copland and Henry Cowell.
But my faves are the French "Impressionists" -- they hated the term, as they took great pains with their compositions: Debussey, Ravel, and Satie.
Love the Mother Goose Suite on solo piano, and Ravel's Sonatine.

In fact, the best video version of Look Through Any Window I've seen is from the Beat Club.

the beat club dropped being live after awhile, some of it was live but lots was mimed in the later 60s. Beat Beat Beat is the other great live show.

Evie's is very good,Linda's is good, but The Hollies are in a class by themselves.Allan Clarke's vocals on this and the other great hits are awesome!
nanajanamike 2 years ago 3
This is NOT a Hollies original. Evie Sands did a much better version of it a year earlier. It was written by Chip Taylor and Al Gorgoni.

LoveMusic720 2 years ago 6
Linda's version is the one I first heard and she did a great job on it. But this one is the best.

Superb song and flawless performance. Didn't those 60s microphones look like early electric shavers?

The Hollies had it ALL!! Flawless harmony...This performance and song defines their sound like no other. As good or better LIVE than their recordings...how many bands can boast that?
Poopaloo55 2 years ago 3
Add to that one of the best drummers in the business, they were magic
eshewerethin 2 years ago 3
Without a doubt....magic!
