I am so upset. I was going to install this game and upload the missions to youtube, and I digged for the CDs and found that disc 1 is broken. I guess I'll have to wait until someone uploads this game to youtube, in order to see all of the missions again.
I still have this game and play it often (when I can get my old machine working, that is). This is probably the best arial combat simulator I've ever played. The one-liners are absolutely hilarious ("Yes sir. Strong coffee they serve here sir," would have me rolling without fail) and characterization is remarkably done. I even have the Thrustmaster joystick that came bundled with the game, though I might finally get a new one, now that I've become addicted to FreeSpace.
I had the same problem. I think i solved it by first instelling dosbox and installed THE game in dos.Did you check THE sound configuration in setup of THE game?
If you want, i can email my dosbox file and info about setup in THE game
I actually have the ThrustMaster joystick made specifically for this game. Still works like a charm and is compatible with other gamepad-enabled games.
Yes, the last mission was tough. Until i found out how to do it. I chose maximum stand off for armamant so i got 6 long range phoenix missiles. I waited some 40 miles behind the carrier for the planes to attack and i aimed my missiless at the incoming exocets instead of the planes. The carrier usually shot down about two planes exept NOMAD who must be finished by gun and that was it!
After 14 years i'm again playing this game and its still so much fun! I like the gameplay. It's between simulation and arcade. Landing on a carrier needs a lot of praktice but you don't have to go through a manual of 600 pages to play the game.
I play it through DOSBOX and still got the old CD rom's. It's a lot of fun to play it on multiplayer.
Holy shit! I remember playing the game for hours and hours on end this really takes me back. My favorite mission was saving Stinger, another good one is flying through the Grand Canyon evading like hell Hondo's shots.
@CheifTucker I could never beat that hop. All the others were a breeze, but that one…I just couldn't get the hang of it. Now, if I had at least one pair of AIM-54s, that'd be a different story. But yes, I've sunk many, many weeks of my life into this game, and, when combined with months more in-depth training provided by X-Plane, I do feel confident in my ability to fly a silver dove outside of a combat situation.
yo i got a question, i downloaded a rip version of the game 14mb size aprox and there are no music no voice sounds and no cut scenes in it. i wonder if there is any problem with the game?
Sure the models looked good, but the landscapes were terribad. Huge flat expanses of low resolution textures stretched on to infinity with no sense of speed either.
lol, i always used to autopilot for landing :D ... i played this game when i was 10 years old and a lot of other flight-simulations too, but this game was the hardest of all. or i was too bad ... i don't know ;)
Dude... did you get a torrent of this game? I've been searching for this game for months. This is super nostalgic.... I remember getting a joystick specifically for this game when it just came out. This guy 'Nomad' calling you a 'cowboy' in his overacted Russian accent over the radio always made me laugh. :)
I have the game. There are some compatibility issues (sound card etc) but I suppose it would work for an old computer. I would make a torrent if I bother to learn how to :)
This game is hilariously hard.. trying to figure out the controls :(
@RayJohnson12, I know it's 2 years later, but if you want to make the torrent, I can walk you through it..
Just google, download and install "ISO recorder". Then put your Top Gun CDs in the drive, right click on the drive and look for the "Create Image From CD/DVD" option (that option will be added after ISO recorder is installed). Then create the images/ISOs. After that is done to both CDs, then upload it to piratebay.
I love this game and it's still on my old Windows 95! Haha! I tried to install this on my new Windows XP computer a few months back, but the game ran very fast :/ I was gutted! So want to play it!
@combomember say, can you find the sound files for it? I'm having a bitch of a time trying to extract the files on the mac version, as they're in a single, "top-gun-only" archive. If they are in any semblance of accessibility, can you tell me how to get them. I love all the little one-liners that the characters have.
hey guys, i still play this game on Windows XP with command prompt without dosbox.
you can play on Windows XP by downloading an emulator called VDMsound.
i don't completely remember how to do this, but install VDMsound, load up the setup for Top Gun 1.1 and install it WITHOUT the emulator running and select a sound blaster card.
after that, type in the emulator command in command prompt and then load up top gun and it SHOULD work
it worked for me and my brother, we both beat campaign.
It never run very fast. Just if u use keyboard it won't work properly, to avoid this use latest versio DOSBOX (dos emulator) , and do you use the origional game ot not?
Does anyone have a link so i can download this game to windows 7?

I played this for ages...got all the way up t the last mission which was IMPOSSIBLE.
You vs, what, 4 SU27s all carrying 4 exocets aimed at your ships?
And as soon as you were within range with your Aim64s, they all fired their missiles? And you were supposed to shoot them down!? Bollocks.
