  • oh and sushi purists can eff off... all the sushi places serve california rolls and boston rolls and all these rolls stuff with mayonnaise and fried chicken etc... seems awfully westernized to me. if its yummy, who cares i say.

  • @snarkdetriomphe I am amazed at the things they now stuff into sushi. One I have been seeing lately is a 'dragon' ... I will have to investigate. I'm sure it is just spicy as hell, fried up, panko coated chicken

  • someday im gonna take some extra translating dough and go to an asian store and buy a sushi mat and all kinds of delectable ingredients i cant get up here and start making my own sushi. its expensive and i just love it. and i am allergic to avocado now [wasnt until i turned 40, so i know what i am missing ugh] and most of them are with avocado... so if i customize i can add whatever i want. yums.

No worries about the bashing. Everyone will do food the way they know how or comfortable with. You gave us an easy to do recipe. Yes on MSG!!

    I don't eat seaweed at all because I am allergic to fish and seaweed is quite fishy...

    Do you have any ideas what I could use instead of the nori ~~ or would the rice work by itself since it is quite sticky...

  • @sooouuuuper hehe Thanks :) She is doing pretty well. Still hasn't had anything to eat quite yet. A cracker here or there. But her doctor said that that was okay. Just to make sure to put fluids into her, and she is doing well on that front!

  • @cutiepie101ism oh no! I just googled kimbap and it is not kimbap at all. They season the rice with a tiny bit of sesame oil and salt. This is entire different. Not Korean but Japanese.

  • @croutoncrackerjacks The one I made has a little more sauce and sugar to make it sweeter. I also cook the tuna with sugar and shoyu and make it a lot drier. It is more like the ones we can get in the Japanese delicatessans here

  • A sushi that doesn't have a fish in it that's still trying to get off the hook? I could actually eat that. I do love fresh salmon on the rare side, but it's the only fish I eat like that, and sushi in general turns me off. Are the seaweed wraps actually edible, or do they just hold it all together?

  • I have never eaten sushi but may want to try it if I find a place that makes it like that since there is no raw fish in it. I lurve the Japanese place by mom's in NYC and I always order their Chicken Teriyaki which is to die for. Everytime we go I like to see the type of sushi people order at the bar. My mom eats sushi but I am wary of the whole raw fish thing plus I am not a big fish eater anyway.

  • I've always wanted to try sushi but am not sure of the taste, can you tell me how the seaweed paper taste? Is it salty? Or maybe it doesn't have a taste it's just to roll rice and tuna together. I would really like to try and make this sushi can you buy seaweed papers at the walmart? Thank you so much for all you share.

  • @maybeeme220 To me, I can't taste the seaweed paper. It adds to the flavor though, I'm sure. I don't think it tastes very salty. I buy my papers at Walmart in the Asian aisle!

  • MORE 'GRANNY & ME' EPISODES! Haha you should title them and make a series XP ...I had no idea that sticky rice was sticky because of the sugar though! Very interesting :) My favourite type of sushi is california roll... mmm seafood extender with avocado..! It looked so pro when your mum made the actual sushi ... then at 6:45 with all of them made & you cutting perfect slithers looked perfect! You must be really good sushi chefs :D lol on the 'grub on' explanation :P you so funny!

  • Santa brought me a rice cooker for Christmas so I'm good to go. I loved this & would love to see more. I may head to the Asian market tomorrow to stock on the basic so I can play along. It looks good & quite inexpensive as well.

  • So pretty so simple! I just bought a kit that was new at our grocery store made it last week, I ate it all! NUM! I did avocado & cream cheese. I had no salmon, I love that! Thanks girls for the demo!

  • Absolutely love this! This confirmed that I am making sushi kinda the right way... I use imitation crab (bad girl) and cucumber strips. I bought the sushi liquid seasoning in a bottle - I now need to try it your mom's way. I also am in favor of you showing the other sushi recipe video! Thanks!

    when you make the end of the nori a little bit wet it wil stick to the roll !

  • I make my sushi the same way! I usually put a very thin slice of salmon in the middle with some cream cheese over the rice with a strip of cucumber. I'd also like to see your second sushi video!

  • @Carballoca yeah no... I don't do raw fish either. I can't take the texture. I'll eat raw crab and raw salmon (since that is more firm) but the sashimi and poke are just too texturally challenging for me lol

  • I used to love sushi, then I made it at home onetime but didn't have a knife sharp enough to cut it nicely, so I tried eating it like a buritio... it was the most perverted food experience of my life. I can't even make eyecontact with sushi anymore without getting uncomfortable.

  • I would watch if you loaded the second video! It was very interesting. For 8 pieces of plain nori sushi (no fish - just vegs) we pay $6.85. It would be nice to be able to make my own. I am going to the Asian store again to see if they have the little bag of dried shrimp. It looked like a very nice touch! I need to take notes (in my moleskine!) for what to look for in Hong Kong.

  • You have quite a few recipes which are japanese related and seem to know how to correctly pronounce things. Which makes me wonder, are you guys Japanese in anyway?

  • @XxAnnA249xX Nope, we are not Japanese. However, the best part of Hawaii is that we are the midway point between the continental U.S. and Asia. So we have a very high population of Asians to include Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, Korean, Thai, etc. We get to experience all their lovely dishes. I grew up being lucky enough to experience all these awesome things! So it is pretty much a way of life. When people ask for "Hawaiian" food, that encompases all of these different countries!
