Ok so basically he called to his coach and said wrong ball or that they had to move it for some reason so the defense wasn't expecting a play, but when the center snaps, or in this case hands off, the ball to the QB it is a live ball and a live play, and since there was no whistle from the ref it was a live play, the only kid who realized the ball was in play was the safety once the QB took off, everyone else was fooled.
