I think it is because people are used to listen "CD guitarists" and not go to any concert at all. That create really high expectations that no guitarist can achieve. Anyway, I guess it's just ignorance.
Marcin had made a "revenge" :) and won GFA 2007 last night. I had chance to watch this guy play and it is amazing. Marcin play a cedar top from the same luthier, not the spruce this time.
The sections that I see that Marcin rushed were actually the slow sections. I bet if he had the piece really memorized he would've been playing the fast sections with more confidence. Marcin seems to have some parts of the piece memorized. He is not always looking down at the score. There are times in the performance when you hear tiny squeaks of a note. This is probably due only to the fact that those slow sections are still not thoroughly learned and he is half reading them.
Jerome Ducharme seemed to have been able to memorize it. I am just saying the judges could have taken that into account. One performer memorized while the other did not. Ducharme's interpretation seems more secure. Ducharme's interpretation came out better possibly due to the fact that he could concentrate more on the music and not worry about looking down at a page of music. Other factors played an important role in his interpretation but the one mentioned above was definitely a factor.
Good Point! Marcin really did not even need the score for most of the piece. Still, one has to admit, it was a daunting task either way. Note the considerable difference of the length of each of their performances. Some might say that Marcin's seemed a little rushed.
Memorization of the piece might have ben better for the competition instead of playing this with the score in front of you. The judges could have been a bit distracted by that and take into account losing points on your performance.
This is the set piece "Appalachian Summer" that was written for this competition. The competing guitarists received the unpublished score about eight weeks before the competition. They had no reference for interpretation other than the printed score. Memorization was not a requirement. Matthew Dunne is commended for writing such a great piece of Music.
He is amazing! Really glad he won in 2007. He deserved it in my opinion. Still love Ducharme too though. Both are among my idols! XD

What a fine guitarist. Deserved his 2007 win. And he's a nice, thoughtful guy to boot. Good on you, Marcin.

Wow, fantastic! I was wondering how we would be able to afford to present him. I will be calling Lynn, shortly. ;-)
